I'm hoping there's some other rifle / Mosin newbies - maybe we could have a lane to ourselves while you're having the shootout.

I'll be thrilled to hit paper - even if it's someone elses!

Am I the only newbie???

I will shoot in the iron sight Mosin class with a Finn M39 and the iron sight non-Mosin class with a Lee Enfield No. 4 MkI. Rimmed cartridges for the win! Assuming I load up ammo for both rifles by then

Even if you are the only newbie, you should come out anyways. Even though it's called a "competition" I just see it as a chance to shoot my rifles and have fun.

My list of what I'll be bringing. All irons. Also, I'm picking up a Garand tomorrow, yaha!

Honestly, we are all newbies. Low Light, Knucklehead and his buddy, and myself were sucking. I think the highest hits on paper we got was 2 out of 5 shots, haha

Do not be intimidated. We call it a comp, but it's just an informal get together to shoot some rifles and poke some fun at each other and maybe some bragging rights for a month. It's not official and not uptight. Whether you hit the paper/ steel or not, shootin' is shootin' and we have a great group of guys

If there's a rifle someone has that you want to shoot, don't be afraid to ask . There will be a lot of rifles there

The comp thing is just a side to getting out and shooting and seeing all these lovely old rifles. I personally enjoy the competition aspect of it but I'm not really good. These are the only shooting "competitions" I have participated in and even losing is fun. You will have a great time.

I'll be bringing
M38 for the mosin shoot
M1 Garand
k98
Yugo SKS
...and ? EDIT thanks for the reminder Armistice.. Bringing my T53 as well.

yeah, to call it a competition would be a disservice to competitions everywhere. the basic idea was a fun shoot to get all us old rifle weirdos together to shoot AT paper and steel, and shoot the s**t mostly. had a pretty variety of guns, and definitely a variety of folks, but it really was a good time. with a little luck and improved circumstances, i'll be back in the game next month and have some new guns to shoot as well. had an incredible offer from one of our members here, you know who you are, to give me a ride, front my admission fee and even some ammo if I wanted to go this weekend, which is possibly the most generous thing I've ever experienced, but alas, the wife has grounded me until I get my act together and get a new job, because all this time off to spend with the kids should be like a fun vacation.....

My T53 has a little bit of rust in the bolt. That and it needs some fine sanding as it catches the bolt somewhere. I should bring it just to work the kinks out

Just orsered new Nagant ammo, so hopefully that doesn't get stuck

Anybody interested in having a 50 yard standing mosin/C&R rifle mini-match? With those heavy rifles, this should be interesting

I'm game. I'll shoot my M98/29 Persian Mauser, since I've already got a few rounds loaded for it. Can't wait for Sunday!

we are getting close folks, my biggest decision is what to shoot. i got some name tags so we can figure out who is who. i will get their before 8 AM and try to hoard the far end benches. if somebody can get their around 7:30 that would be great. last time i was early but alone and some shooters were setting up in the middle of our shoot. i politely mentioned that a large calguns group was coming and we would like to use the far end. they ignored me and set up which is their right to do. but if we get their first we are good to go.

What's the procedure for non members when they arrive?
Is there a gate or can we drive straight in...where to park...do we need to sign in with anyone?

I've not been to WEGC before.

Since there are a lot of new people coming, here is a copy of the post Baboosh made for the original shoot with directions:

------------------------------------------------------

Directions:

From the greater Los Angeles area: Take the 10 Freeway east to Interstate 15 north.

From Orange County: Take the 91 Freeway east to Interstate 15 north.

From San Bernardino: Take the 215N Freeway to Interstate 15 south.

Exit at Sierra Avenue.
Go north (toward the mountains), 1.5 miles.

Please remember the speed limit on this dirt road is 12 2/3 MPH.

Once you enter the gate please keep speed under 5mph as to not kick up a lot of dust.

When you get to the range and once you stop at the stop sign please inform the range master you are here for the Calguns Mosin/C&R Shoot

Bring CASH to pay the range (should be $10 each for guests)

We will be setup on the far right when looking at the main range.

Default matches

i am sure everything will turn out fine but i hope shooters will put together their own matches according to the rifle they want to compete in. some just want to bring out their rifles and bang away which is fine. the 100 yard mosin scoped and iron sight shoot is the only one already set up. So when we all get their we need to see who wants to do what. we had a real good time last time but it just turned into a shooting free for all which is not all bad.

Jimja, thanks for the info!

Does anyone have any of the low recoil Mosin training ammo that was being sold a while back?

I would be interested in buying some rounds (I'm thinking around 50) or swapping for regular surplus.

Forget the low recoil stuff. If the recoil is uncomfortable after a few shots as it is with many Mosin shooters you can get a limbsaver pad from Walmart that just slips on and off. If anyone says you are soft for using it tell em to kick rocks. These also add an extra inch or so to the buttstock and if you have long arms that helps a lot. Midget Smaller Statured Russians made for some short buttstock designs.

i find shooting my mosin standing the recoil is manageable, but sitting their is something about how the stock sits on my shoulder it hurts.i do use the slip on pad most of the time. be sure to get the large one for the mosin. a medium is very hard to slip on.

I was thinking of getting my wife started with a Mosin - she's taken a surprising amount of interest.
Is there a worthwhile reduction in recoil?

my 11 year old grand son shoots my mosins, but i do not recommend it. with a good pad on the stock it is not to bad. it will not leave a bruise or hurt with a slip on pad. i see ladies shooting them. are you coming to the shoot this sunday ? .plenty of 91-30s she can try.

I have some of the low-recoil training ammo, not sure how much. also have the chamber insert to shoot 7.62x25 in a mosin, which is awesome. I won't make it this month but i'll definitely make it next month and bring some. to help with recoil when shooting from the bench, you're better off to prop up on your elbows so you can hold more like you would standing up, WAAAAY nicer on the shoulder, especially with the mosins. or you could get a sissy recoil pad....

I have found a very noticeable reduction in recoil. I like to go out to the desert and shoot all day and night, wake up and do it again so a slip on pad does come in handy. For me the added benefit of the extra inch on the stock does help as I am a big guy. To be honest the pad allows me to shoot longer than if I didn't have the pad on there, after a point Mosin shoulder is not fun. The (full powered)7.62x54r is still a large round going off so even with the slip on pad it might not be for everyone.

Does anyone have the Go and No-go Gauges for the Nagant they could bring to the shoot?

I just got a T-53, absolutely nothing on it matches anything else, so in this case I thought it might not be a bad idea to check the bolt

just shoot it, you'll be fine. despite the detractors, let's face it, I've heard of a lot of mausers blowing up, but never a mosin. take a walk on the wild side!

Yeah, normally I would not worry. However, this T-53 looks like it was buried for decades, has rust on pretty much every piece, nothing matches, etc. In this particular case I think it's not a bad idea. I'm 99.9% sure it's fine, but still, that 0.1% can be a bit....wild

if it was American-made, i'd worry about it, but the Russians made stuff to be buried for decades. I used to take my suspect rifles, tie them to a tire and tie string around the trigger to testfire. kinda like shooting artillery, which is fun, until you realize you're weird for enjoying it. and armistice, i'm still chuckling like an idiot because of that picture, priceless! now I want to watch those movies again, it's been a while.

Yeah, I know what you mean. However, in this case it's a 1956 Chinese copy of something the Russians made. Chinese made copies don't exactly inspire confidence, in this case nothing is matching.

I've never ran across a Russian rifle where nothing matched. I think I have at least 5 different serial numbers on this 1 rifle

I bet the trigger pull is pretty sweet though.

My T53 has 5rnds through it. If I recall, it breaks at the back just like my Mosin does
