Request for recipe (.45 ACP) 230gr XTP, Bullseye
Hey guys, I've been reloading for rifle for about six months and I've recently decided to start reloading for pistol as well. I want to eventually do it for .45 ACP and 9mm but I'm starting with .45 ACP. These loads will be used in my SA 1911 TRP and my Sig P220r. What recipes are you guys using? I specifically need information using Hornady 230gr XTP bullets, Bullseye powder and CCI Large Pistol primers. Also, what crimp diameter are you guys using?
Thanks. |

You did check your reloading manual(s), yes? Lee's book generally has data for the XTP bullets.
I've never seen the need to "crimp" any semi-auto pistol cartridge. It's enough to simply iron out the bell.

Yes I did but neither the Hornady or the Lyman manual have anything about the 230gr XTP bullet. Well, the Hornady has the 230gr XTP bullet but they don't have Bullseye listed. What's a comparable bullet that I can use?

I have used 5.0grs of BE under a 230gr XTP. I load my XTP's in my .45 Auto's pretty short as the sharp shoulder on the bullet tends to jam in tighter throats. That is something to work a dummy round up with until you know how the throat is going to take the XTP bullet. Bullets with round ogive's won't have this issue.
I crimp all my .45 Auto cases to .469-.471" OD at the case mouth. You likely will only need to take the belling out of the case for that bullet for reliable feed. My crimp is set for when I load 200gr LSWC's, which helps in feeding in my 1911's. The above will probably yield about 850fps out of your TRP.

Do you have a Hornady book?
If not, shoot me a PM and I'll send you the scanned pages.

If I were you, I would make a dummy up starting at 1.265" and see if it will hand feed all the way into battery. Your TRP might already be throated enough to feed the XTP's at that length. If the gun won't go into battery at 1.265", just march it down until it will feed reliably. When I refer to it as a tight throat, it really isn't as much a tight throat as it is how much freebore your barrel provides. A little freebore goes a long way when loading bullets where the bearing surface enters the bore (like the XTP, T/C and LSWC profiles, etc.) Good luck, have fun.

Thanks for all the help guys. So I made some dummy rounds at various OAL's and it seems that both the TRP and the P220 like a 1.23" OAL with a crimp at 0.469". It fed very smoothly. So I loaded up 50 rounds with 4.5 gr of Bullseye just to test them out. I'm planning on working my way up to 5.0 gr and see which charge weight performs best.
