Yup, I know =)

FMJBT made me aware of that a little while back. I made that comment when Vortex didn’t have that option available.

I did talk to Vortex over a year ago about making a revised 2.5-10 like this; I wonder if it was my voice that was actually heard.

I’m still considering a Bushnell 3-12 FFP with the G2DMR reticle instead… I have a few pieces of Vortex glass already and feel like trying something new.

That’s a great choice too… I have a Vortex 4-16 FFP… Great scope but honestly if I had to do it again I don’t think I would have got the FFP version for MY application.

I have it sitting on a dedicated target rifle and I’m always at max mag. The SFP crosshair thickness is more pleasing to use when shooting groups.

Also built a muzzle shroud for it to attempt to reduce the amount of dust kicked up from the Ops Inc brake. It does kick up a little less dust now, but is still extremely loud due to the large side ports. The extra weight up front, along with having the last few inches of barrel under tension from the mount have helped with accuracy somewhat as well.

The Douglas barrel on yours should do really well with the 77's, definitely looking forward to a range report once you get it out to shoot it.

I'm running the Bergar SPR barrel sold by PRI on mine. It's the "budget" option to the Douglas barrel they also sell. Accuracy out of this rifle has been really good. Fist time out and it was shooting around 1 moa. After a few trips to the range and several hundred rounds of mechanical break-in it would shoot into 3/4 to 1/2 moa pretty consistently. Since the addition of the "shoulder thing that goes up", more often than not it ends up being 1/2 moa. Due to the ammo shortage I have been shooting reloads almost exclusively through this. My favorite load so far is the Nosler 77 grain BTHP over 24 grains of Hodgedon CFE-223 loaded to 2.25" in Lake City brass. Running the numbers I've been getting for drop at 650 yards (5 mils), this round is getting about 2820 FPS out of the muzzle.

Really cool. Could you tell us more about the shroud? and perhaps a few more photos as well? Back when I had a Mk12'ish build, I wanted to machine a fake can just for sh*ts and giggles

Thanks. I built this primarily to reduce the dust signature from the Ops Inc brake. Secondary function of course was to somewhat mimic the profile of the Ops 12th can. Building a shroud for use over a muzzle brake is kind of a challenge from an engineering standpoint to make sure everything stays legal. To that end, I made sure that every opening on the shroud is larger than the corrosponding opening in the muzzle brake that it covers. This ensures that any gas exiting out of the brake has no chance to slow down and expand prior to exiting the shroud. The object was just to redirect muzzle blast, not to contain it in any fashion.

It's constructed of various 300 series stainless fittings that I found at McMaster Carr. The external tube is 1.5" seemless tubing. The mounting end is a 3/4" Sch. 10 Stub End, bored out slightly to clear the threads on the Ops Brake. Welded to the end of that is a short section of 3/4" Sch. 40 pipe nipple that has been internally threaded to 22X1 metric thread. The stub end was then tig welded to the end of the 1.5" tube. The external tube is ported in multiple locations in the area covering the muzzle brake, 6 ports in all.

Internals ahead of the muzzle brake consist of a "Spool Piece" made from a section of 1/2" stainless tube with a washer welded on either end. The spool piece serves to reduce the internal volume of the shroud, giving even less room inside for any expanding gasses. The internal stainless tube is not drilled or ported in any way that would allow gas to be stripped away from behind the bullet, and the diametrical clearance between the bullet and tube is large enough to allow a large volume of gas to exit with the bullet. The washer on the inside is plug welded through the external tube in 8 locations around the perimeter, and the one on the outside end is fully welded for an extremely permanent installation. The smaller ports along side the shroud are there to allow insepction of the internals to verify that there are no internal baffles of any kind, and also to allow any gas that may end up bypassing the internal end of the spool piece to exit without "slowing and cooling".

The assembly threads on just as the original can would, indexing against the tapered collar for a 2 point mount. This required a small bevel on the inside of the 3/4" stub end to sit against the collar. I made a very slight bevel by spinning a 1" ball bearing against the opening with a lot of valve lapping compound. By controlling the depth of the bevel, I was able to time the shroud so that it threads on and seats at the same point everytime it's installed. Did a quick diagram in paint that should help explain a bit better:

My latest project in the pursuit of lightweight precision: A 14.5" with pinned/welded Ops Inc chambered in 300 Blackout. This probably belongs more in the "RECCE/Recon" rifle thread, but due to how heavily it borrows from the MK 12 Mod 0, it's getting added here.



The biggest problem I encountered when setting this up with the SPR top rail, was the fact that the rail leaves no room for folding iron sights on the forend. With the shorter barrel, a barrel mounted front sight is also not an option because it would mount in the area between the Ops brake and the collar, where a suppressor is supposed to mount (Building this for a move out of state in about a year). Since the top rail mounts to a receiver height picatinny rail on the forend, I simply shortened it to leave enough room out front for the folding sight:



The front end has been contoured to match the hooded post on the front sight for a minimal gap when folded:

I honestly don't know what I was thinking. I was just over it, and then...I came to my senses. Haha. I'm glad I didn't get any serious inquiries, because it would probably be gone and I'd be kicking myself right now. I have more parts coming in the near future as well, but most of the money is going into a Block II-ish project right now. I posted a pic of it in the Trijicon ACOG setup thread.

By the way, the rifle you just posted is amazing. I love the color!
