Wouldn't mind getting in on that.

Bison is quite tasty.

Alas, I probably wouldn't get drawn.

Interesting, but the article states you will be required to walk up to 8 miles a day, carrying a 60# pack @ 8000' and there is a shooting test requiring 5 shots on a plate @ 200 yards.

Lots of walking in the snow since the hunts will be from October-May when the access road is closed to the public.

Make sure you're up to it before applying.

Let me say I'm not AntI Hunting . Were there not literally milions of Bison that Roamed the area in the 1800s now all of a sudden 600 Bison that in 10 years may become 1500 are contaminating water and trampling vegetation. Doing what ? Being Bision . I like to hunt and Fish . But don't try and feed everyone some b.s. line the it's to protect the water and plants the Bison have Been trampling and Contaminating for millions of years . The other thing that stands out is the Hide and Head going to the Tribes and having to divide up meat to other volunteers .

I'm not remotely experienced enough to participate, but I'm sure there are CG'ers who are.

Aside from the marksmanship element, I read the "Requirements," of the pack and hike with a grain of salt. I can't imagine that in 2017, there aren't well-equipped trailers staged with ATVs and/or snowmobiles for those who are truly qualified, regardless of the Rambo qualifications they expect.

It all has to do with the size of the habitat and its carrying capacity. When there were millions of Bison, there were not hundreds of millions of people and all the changes to the environment and fragmentation of habitat that we have caused.

The NPS does not authorize a public hunt on a whim. It is not part of that department's culture. I am sure they have studied this thing to death. Personally, I applaud them for letting private citizens participate in the hunt. Their usual M.O. is to hire professionals at high cost.

The requirements are high, but given the size of the animals and time of year, not unreasonable. Besides, it will weed out the yahoos.

Hmmmmm.... Gotta look into this. The AZ bison draw is equivalent to the Ca elk draw odds, plus it's truly a once in a lifetime hunt, I know guys that have put in for bison for nearly 50 years and haven't drawn.

Here's an idea. Forget the tag limits. Just limit the method of take to traditional or primitive gear and no backup weapons, horses or vehicles to bail you out. Self limiting, self managing -- the way God intended. Seems like a shame to use a modern rifle on such a majestic beast of myth and legend. Anybody brave enough to try it (or dumb enough -- fine line at times) deserves whatever result they get. Glory well deserved... or Guts (spilled). Either way, you would earn it. And if the worse should happen, what a way to go. Sure beats cancer. To paraphrase E. Abbey, alas, us sons of rugged pioneers...

I'm halfway joking, by the way. But only halfway.

I've heard of other hunts just outside Jellystone.

Bison can spread disease (hoof and mouth) to cattle is the main driver.

Would love some bison meat. A rug sounds nice too.

I'll give up half the meat. But I want the head.
Not sure if I'm interested in packing out a bison for 8 miles to feed someone else and have Nothing hanging on the wall.

They are using machines and equipment to retreve the animals, the meat is to be dived-up between the tribes and hunters, the hide, head, horns, etc go to the tribes.

They still need to work out the details. I wonder how you prove your capabilities. I can do that, I'm training now, up to 3 miles now but not at elevation. If I push to 8 miles I'll burned out, I need to save that energy for the test and hunting days. And how much will it cost the volunteers, license, tags, etc, what caliber?
