Default lee carbide die rusting

Hi guys, I just started reloading this week and I've loaded up about 300 rounds of 9mm on my new classic turret press. I was looking at the resizing die and it looks like its starting to change color, almost like there might be a light misting of rust on it. I DID have to torque the die a couple times to get the decapping pin to slip back down; I'm just not sure if this is normal or if there is a little bit of rust forming on the die. its also on my powder measure riser. Can this happen from handing the dies? These are brand new dies and I've only had them for less than a week. How could they be rusting so fast? What should I do to clean this up and how can I prevent this from happening? I included a photo of the dies, the resizing die and the powder riser used to look bright and silver like the die behind it.

Should I call Lee customer support, clean the dies, what should I do?

Do you live by the ocean? Did you leave the dues installed in the press? I would cover your bench to keep moisture off of them

I live 15 mins from the ocean, not close enough that I'd expect them to rust up that quickly

If you store your die in the garage it will rust. If you store it in your house away from open windows it won't.

Call Lee. They'll take care of you. Treat all dies with eezox in the future to avoid rust issues

Yes please call Dillon. Maybe they will let you send them in and they will send you a new die set!

(now that WOULD be funny to see happen.)

If Dillon dies did not rust out there, then I would put that as another check to try a Dillon die set.

OR, just take better care of my stuff...

I've had that happen to a few sets. One that is 25 years old. Still makes good ammo.

I think sending Lee dies to RCBS is a much better idea. RCBS is more likely to send you free crap.

Having the same situation happen to a set of Dillon dies...they won't. Dillon and their amazing warranty isn't all that amazing. This is from personal experience.

Call lee and 15 mins from the ocean doesn't mean you're away from harm. There is literally salt in the air from the ocean. When you are finished using your dies out them away and obviously in an area that isn't having the ocean air contact anything. I sure do hope your firearms have no contact with the air.

Recently moved within a couple miles of the ocean and I've never spent so much time fussing over keeping everything properly protected... Also switched from CLP to Collector for the safe queens.

I use Ballistol to clean my dies, haven't had a rust issue with my Hornady dies. My reloading setup is in my home office though.

Call lee, once you get new dies take care 0f them and treat them like a firearm and coat them with a light film of oil.

I've been keeping the set up in my home office, so there shouldn't be a TON of moisture in the air, though I've left the dies on the press uncovered for a couple days. I started covering the dies and press last night. They still make ammo just fine tho...

I've been using this anti rust paper for years...I just keep my Lee dies in the original plastic boxes and put one sheet of this (non printed side to the dies) in each box...have my dies in the garage...have never had a speck of rust or discoloration...I also put one sheet of this in my plastic Ruger gun cases (again non printed side to the gun)...I use CLP collector for the "safe queens" and standard CLP for the shooters..all have one little sheet of the anti rust paper in the box...again have never had any issues with rust...I live in San Diego...inland about 10 miles.....everything is in the garage except powder and primers...safe has a golden rod in it and a couple of silica units that can be recharged..I never leave dies just sitting out or in the press.

Here's an E bay link to the anti rust paper. (works great with tools, cameras, etc)..

Any time I get corrosion on my dies I take them apart and put them in my vibratory tumbler with walnut media and this will polish the dies clean of rust.

Then take some Mothers mag cleaner and polish the dies by hand, this will remove any remaining corrosion and and wax and seal the surface of the die.

And you don't need to send your dies anywhere and just clean them yourself.

Your moist hands have salt on them from sweat, so stop eating salty pretzels and drinking beer the night before you reload.

This explains why my lee dies are rusted...I mean patina. I throw them in a SS tumbler once in a while, touch up with the dermal (steal wire wheel) and put a light coat of rem/hoops oil on them. I also live 10 miles from the coast but my shower is only 4ft away.

If you are in Southern California, we've had wicked humidity the last week or two, due to that Hurricane down in Baja. Heat+humidity can do that. Shouldn't affect your ammo.

Yes they will still make good ammo because unlike blue, that is what brown will do for you...

Don't think about that, it makes more sense if you don't.

Oh I am off Hodgdon ANYTHING. They say one thing but when it comes to snorting, it is weak and does not do what they advertise, so I went with a more, hmmmmmmm, ACCURATE powder...
