Default Traveling cross country with my 9mm... Any advise?

Hi All,

I did travel with my 9mm before, but not that far and long and it was a couple years ago...

Flying from San Francisco with Delta to Atlanta to pickup my new car and then going to drive all the way back...

I check with Delta and from what I can tell I declare my weapon durning checkin which their website claims is all what I need todo prior.

My gun will be unloaded inside a gun Vault which uses a key or keypad to open (yes, I know that think is a joke), but its enough to meet their requirements. This case is inside a zero metal Halliburton briefcase. Inside that case I also transport 5 packs of ammo and my magazines (unloaded).

Guess once I'm in the car driving back I would like to have just the unloaded gun in the gun vault and 2 loaded mags inside locked of course. Question... I guess I could have that vault on my passenger seat?

Should I go and check each state for specific rules before entering ?

Any thoughts ?
Thanks,

Each state has different laws on carrying a firearm. You can check each state laws that you plan on driving through.

The "universal" safe way seems to be having the unloaded firearm in an unlocked container, and that container out of reach from the driver (like in the trunk). Also, you will want to keep the loaded mags in a separate locked container as well. Sure it's legal in a lot of places/states to carry loaded mags in the same locked container as the handgun, but most cops who you could possibly encounter on the way, may not know the laws 100%, so you're just saving yourself from the extra hassle.

The best advice I can offer is to disguise that fancy ZERO Halliburton case as a basic duffle bag, with your vault or other TSA approved gun case within it.

As far as the gun vault on the front seat, I believe that depends on each state you travel thru, including Texas

This pretty much.

This will be good across the US, but check each state's laws anyway, because some states prevent stopping (even for gas) with a weapon in the car. That's how that vet got busted in DC a while back.

This would be a good time to get your ccw inAZ and UT and it might cover the states you'll be in.

Me personally I wouldn't keep loaded mags period . a cal gunner got arrested for loaded mags in a gun case and when I got pulled over the cop screamed when he thought he saw a box of ammo on my front seat.

I can't afford to fight in court so that's what I do. I did get the ccws just for fun really. may not hurt.
