Actually it is due to the voters, politicians, AB60 and the DMV.

I chose the ID vs upgrading my CDL as it lasts longer in my age group (mid-60's, 8-10 years vs 5), likely not an issue for younger folks?

Important note, I brought a printed from my online SSA account SSA-1099 to prove SS#, and they almost didn't take it without me asking for a manager, as they want the original (which of course is not mentioned on their site!), so bring the original SSA docs or a card to avoid hassles.

Geez, this really sucks, and all due to the CA DOJ having it's head stuck up it's a**...
If still working they'll take a W2 as well for SS# verification. That's what I used.

I participate in DOJ's last webinar last week for FFLs. Mike Kelly from DOJ confirmed AB60 CDLs issued after the Jan 2018 date are valid for purchasing a firearm. He said a bulletin was pending but its been a week so not sure why its not out yet.

The follow-up question to that is how do we determine AB-60 DL's after they renew? Is there a different DL format for them?

I was told the same thing, but until the bulletin comes out ...

Not sure I fully understand your question. If you're asking if AB60 CDLs are different than Real IDs; answer is yes. Lots of posts on that but basically AB60 CDLs will include "Federal Limits Apply" language while Real IDs will not. If you mean how to tell the difference between AB60 IDs issued before and after Jan 2018 date, there is an issue date (ISS) in the bottom right hand corner of a CDL.

They still issue AB60 licenses, so the question is how to tell the difference between an AB60 license and a legal resident non-Real ID renewal.

Correct. That is my question.

Unless CA specifically puts "AB60" or some other loud marking on the DL's, we cannot tell the difference.

I was advised to either know my customer is legal by a past purchase or to get a passport from the USA and copy it with id and fsc..
