Default Psych eval

Hello CG Leos,

Was hoping to get some advice on the psych eval portion of the hiring process. I know first and foremost to just be honest and calm. Wanted to see if there were any other items I should keep in mind.

So far ive passed written,PAT, oralboard, poly/voice stress test and medical. Last hurdle is the Psych.

Appreciate your time/input.

Take your time and read every question asked in the testing portion completely, and thoroughly. You will see the same basic question asked several different ways though out the test. Don't read too much into the test it's designed to give a personality assessment. Answer honestly, about the way you feel.

Good luck

I've actually done the questionnaire portion already, State broke it up into two different portions. Waiting for my interview date with the actual psychiatrist at this point.

In your opinion when they ask the same question just phrased diff, are they looking for consistency? I've been told before that they usually don't want extremes but a happy middle. For example "Do you like to socialize with other people" (worded 5 different ways throughout the test) that saying yes all 5 times or no all 5 times is extreme. Instead saying yes 3 and no twice is kind of better. Maybe this is untrue. For me, yeah I like to interact with friends and others but hell, I like a night in sometimes too haha. Appreciate your input P5Ret.

I don't know if there is a correct answer to your question. I guess it depends a lot on the psychiatrist, and their schooling and experience. Some may want more consistent answer's across the board, some may see that as someone trying to dupe the test.

Here you go OP... this really gets into the weeds about the psych screening of Peace Officer applicants but it should answer all your questions.

Be aware that the person conducting the exam will have access to your entire PHS and the completed background investigation. Just FYI

question 165, "have you ever thought about bestiality?"

question 289, "have you ever considered bestiality?"

question 566, "have you ever tried bestiality?"

No jokes please, actual questions from a past psych. eval.

Don't over think it... Like you said; you might answer some of those "same but different" questions differently.. If you do and get asked about; just have an answer that explains why (and there can be valid reasons to say "yes" to one and "no" to the other).

Just answer the questions honestly. Don't over think it. The test is intended to weed out people that aren't equipped emotionally to do the job.

I don't know that there's any real magic to it. Personally I think it's mostly hocus pocus but that's just me. I didn't do anything to prepare and I didn't over think the test. Turned out ok for me.

I would be interested in the results if every officer with more than 15 years on took it though. I bet the results would get weird.

Tell the truth and don't contradict yourself. My eval was long and seemed more like a background interview but just be honest and confident.

I just passed my psych eval. just be open, honest and consistent. thats really all it comes down to.

I also asked how i did on the 12 minute/40 question IQ test and scored with "superior intelligence". inflated my ego about 2 pumps with that one. only thing i think i messed up on, is when i went to shake the psych's hand, we missed locking thumbs and i committed to the most awkward handshake ever. I dont think it was grounds for DQ because she said "have fun in the academy" so i think im good

Alternate (aka Equivalent) Forms
■ Involves using differently worded questions to measure the same
construct.
Questions or items are reworded to produce two items that are
similar but not identical.
Items must focus on the same exact aspect of behavior with the
same vocabulary level and same level of difficulty.
Items must differ only in their wording.
■ Reliability is the correlation between the responses to the pairs of
questions.
■ Alternate forms reliability is said to avoid the practice effects that can
inflate test-retest reliability (i.e., respondent can recall how they
answered on the identical item on the first test administration).

Just wanted to thank you all for the input and information. Had my psych interview last Friday, received my call today clearing all phases of the process and headed to academy in Oct. Looking forward to joining the brotherhood and starting a career.

This.

I had one who tried everything it seemed to get me worked up. Questioned my owning and type of firearms BIG time.

Second one I had was totally low key, very laid back and really just wanted to know about me.

They will back your background packet and any additional info usually, keep that in mind.

*edit*

Just saw you passed. Congrats.

I had a CVSA that got real weird since I worked with probationers in a treatment/supervision prior to that, primarily with sex offenders. That was fun.
