So true, what is your time worth anyway and how many possible times are you going to watch the same thing.

Since anyone can grab anything from someone else's unsecured wireless network, I would think this is a last gasp. Unless they passed a law requiring one's network be secure. Did they?

Wow. The average fine is $3,000. With 23,000 John Doe defendants that is a potential $69,000,000 or more.

I used to download until I got a email from charter saying to stop. Scared the crap out of me so I just watch them on Netflix now. Not really worth the hassle to hide my ip to download stuff. I would rather spend my time reloading

for each person that has a wireless router, their lawyer will just defend with "their networks are not 100% secure, and as such, are not responsible for what was downloaded by a third party illegally using the bandwidth."

then they will be dismissed, unless the prosecutor gets ahold of every 23,000 users' pc and use computer forensic and scans the hard drives for the movie. since anyone with a brain would automatically wipe their HD once they get the notice in the mail that they are being charged.

There's a link at the bottom of this article that will check if your IP is involved in any of the bittorrent lawsuits.

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/201...awsuit-checker

Quote:
Disclaimer: Results of Wired.com’s IP Detective tool (above) are not conclusive. If a match is found, this does not mean your computer was used to download the file in question, nor that you are a target of the lawsuit. IP addresses can change from time to time. If you didn’t personally use BitTorrent to download the named film on the day and time listed, it’s likely your computer has simply inherited the IP address of someone who did.

cant stop p2p , FTP or other methods of file sharing .... they can crack down on public advertised sharing sites, but no way of making it "illegal" you need "file sharing" to build the internet , FTP is how the majority of web sites are uploaded to there servers ....

Oh yeah, definitely better ways, like waiting for your friend to torrent the movie, then give you a copy

netflix 8$ a month. Whats the point to pirate when its basically dirt cheap to rent it over and over as you please.
i can see back in the day when a DVD was 25$ to own and renting one from aholes Blockbuster was 5$ a night but anymore you gotta be kidding. its next to pointless IMO.

Some peoples connections are not fast enough to stream content..

Seems the real money isn't about getting viewers these days, instead it is suing them.

One of my co-workers makes around $35/hr, but is still too cheap to spend $10/mo on netflix or $1.00 per rental at one of the movie vending machines. He gets all of his movies via download. I wouldn't be surprised if he got caught.

Your internet is still your responsibility. Its your job to secure it and make sure no one else gets on. The whole "Its not my fault" thing doesn't fly when they have your name on the bill.

that would be like saying, i left a piece of wood board with a nail in it on the curb next to my trash can. later it was found used in a murder, by your reasoning, i am on partially on the hook for the murder? BS

there is no law saying you must secure your wireless internet. why, b/c at this point most people know that with some knowledge, anyone can hack your "security". if even the top level government/corporate systems can be hacked, what do you think a consumer based security system can do?

True to a degree, however many people whom are not technical at all just plug them in barely get them running open and yet they can buy it easily, and even those now who thought WEP was secure are flying open to anyone who can simply snort it out in a few minutes. Look how many WEP wifi's are out there right now? And those people thought they did something to secure it. What you want the government to regulate how you run your wifi at home now?

The industry recognizes there is a real problem out there now with home wifi.
