First firing SR556E -- very satisfied!!
Finally got the new SR556E to the range today. Since forum posts seem to have a lot of complaints, I am pleased to be able to say that the SR556E functioned flawlessly. I put exactly 200 rounds through the rifle, and everything worked great.
Although I have fired a lot of M16s in my day, the SR556E was quite a surprise due to its piston operating system. The action when firing feels very smooth and imparts a "gentler" feel than the standard Direct Impingement system. The result was that I was able to achieve pretty OK groups for a rusty 58 year old codger. Shooting at 25 yards while shooting from the shoulder my groups were around 2.5 inches and a few were better than that. (OK, OK a few were worse too. Alright, more than a few. ) Naturally practice will better this. Overall I must say that I was pleased with the gentleness of the rifle. It performed beautifully. I shot 3 different types of .223 ammo and all fired and ejected fine. I used three different brands of magazines and all were fine, and all held the bolt back when empty. Ejections were very consistent. I used setting 2 for all of the ammunition. I should have tried setting one but did not think about it. By the way, my perception of the smooth action of the SR556 was not only mine. A couple of friends who had been firing a brand-new DI AR15 also fired my SR556 and made the same observation that I did about the smoothness of the rifle. One remarked that "my wife would like firing this gun." The piston system sure beats the heck out of the DI system when it comes to cleaning. It only took a few minutes to clean the piston assembly. The bolt was almost pristine -- a gentle wipedown with CLP was all it needed. When I think of what my Army M16 was like after firing, particularly the bolt container group and chamber, I can really appreciate the piston system of the SR556E.

Nice! Part of the softer recoil might be weight related. Piston AR's are heavier than DI AR's.

Would you recommend moving it back? I am new to the Troy Battlesight system. In the Army we did not have a choice about things like that.

But did you shoot Wolf?
Did you shoot any wolf? Try that and then update the post.
(And if Wolf doesn't work, send the gun back to the manufacturer.) (j/k!) Congrats on the gun, I almost go one myself and for $1000 it seems like a bargain. |

The ranges around here frown on Wolf and it has a reputation for being exceptionally dirty. So I steer clear of it.

I personally run mine in the same spot he's showing. If you put it any further back than that, I find it interferes with working the charging handle. Especially in the winter with gloves on. Plus, he has a nice long sight radius with that long barrel. If it were a 14.5" or 10.5" barrel, I might put the sight back one more notch to try to get the longest sight radius I could with the shorter barrels.

I'm already running a BCM Gunfighter in medium. If I put the sight back one more notch it interferes with the charging handle when the sight is folded down.

I love my SR-556E! Got well over 1000 rounds down it (lost count) and it's been pretty reliable. Only thing I noticed is when using 5.56 NATO spec ammo, I gotta dial the gas back to the #1 setting instead of default #2. All .223 ammo seems to work flawless on 2, but it will cycle a little too fast and jam into the top with 5.56, or other slightly hotter loads.
You're right on the cleaning! It's quick and easy. Even the dirty stuff. My only complaint is I get some fouling under the handguard that's difficult to get to without some kind of pick or scraper.

You appear to have set up your SR556E about like I did. But what is that flash-hider you have?

Yep. Which I love a LOT over the "mini 14" birdcage it came with. Though, if I had to do it all over, I would buy the Parallax Tactical comp. A buddy has one on his AR and I honestly can't tell a difference between them, other than my wallet was 100$ lighter after buying mine. Parallax is local to me too, and they will usually install anything you buy there for free (at least my expirence so far). Both of them were a significant improvement for stability.

It's not that dirty. And I thought the piston was supposed greatly reduce the grime? So then wouldn't shooting dirty ammo be a non issue?

As somebody firmly in the "there is nothing wrong with DI and you are all buying pistons just because you fall easily for gimmicky products" camp, I can't help but snicker at somebody who buys a piston rifle and refuses to shoot dirty ammo through it.

Let's not have this nice thread degenerate into another "DI versus piston" thread. I was in charge of M16 maintenance in the Army for too many years to have any illusions about the DI system and the stress that it induces upon the action of the weapon. Let's leave it at that.

Use dirty ammo on DI -> super dirty
Use clean ammo on DI -> still dirty, but not as much Use dirty ammo on piston -> not as dirty Use clean ammo on piston -> even less dirty Plus Wolf ammo sucks anyway. I'd rather run Miwall gun show reloads than Wolf any day. They're brass cased, non-magnetic, and STILL cheaper than factory Wolf.

Shot over 4k rounds of their stuff in 9mm, .45, .223, and .308. Not a single problem yet. I pick up at least a couple hundred every gun show.

Everyone I have ever talked to agrees that Wolf ammo simply sucks. I never have had any interest in proving it to myself. If you like it, you are welcome to it. In fact, I WANT you to use it. All that extra time you will spend cleaning that crud out of your rifle will keep you out of trouble.

Had another fabulous morning at Field Time's rifle range in Stanton. Put 200 rounds of .223 down range and the SR556E performed flawlessly. The shooter (me) did OK but not great. What a great time!
I hope to see some fellow Calgunners at Field Time before long!

Nice! I got my self one of these 2 months ago, and I just sold my eotech recently for an acog TA 11 for my 556e. Does anyone know if magpul UBR would center the balance of 556e better? And after firing 200+rounds at the range, the hand rail becomes burning hot, and anyone got a cheap solution to that? Thanks.

I will probably move the optic forward a bit out of necessity when I get the 3d Gen 3X EOTech scope. Good suggestions; thank you.

Nothing wrong with the M&P Sport! I considered that one also, and liked it. Be sure and give us your impressions!
