Firearm course for officer's spouses
Hello all,
I've been given the task of assembling a lesson plan/course of fire aimed at our officer's spouses. I have some clear ideas about what I want to include, but there's no sense in reinventing the wheel. Any of your agencies have such a course they would be willing to share? Thanks in advance! MB |

We have an actual spouses academy which encompasses a lot of different aspects of the job including firearms and firearm safety. The firearm portion covers basic firearm safety, proper care and maintenance of a firearm, shooting methods and techniques, concealment, laws regarding owning and carrying a firearm and most importantly, how to make the proper decision on when to use it and how to articulate why you did in the event that you had to.
While similar to a basic handgun use and safety class, it also allows spouses to better understand their LEO spouses role and helps make them more comfortable around firearms. It also offers ways to cope with and handle an officer involved shooting should their spouse god forbid be injured or killed on the job. |

get in touch with Sparks Police Department in Nevada. They put on a yearly spouse academy and do a ton of shooting.

Great Thread!! One of the other things I like to cover with my wife is drawing from my holster if I am incapacitated.
Home defense scenarios are great too!!! I've done some informal training with coworker's wives. Afterwards they are usually pissed because their wife makes them carry regularly. The spouse academy is a fantastic idea. |

Contact LASD Training Bureau. They used to run one. My wife attended 30 years ago and was taught to shoot.
Glendale, ARIZONA Police Department has a pretty good one too. My daughter recently (last month) went thru it. They fired handguns, rifles, and shotguns. They also spent some time at EVOC learning defensive driving and high speed driving on the pursuit course. My daughter loved it.

Orange County Sheriff's Academy does a 'spouse survival course' for a few hours in the last weeks of the academy. It's directed more at the emotional, psychological and financial aspects. There is a short segment from the range staff on firearms safety, handling and storage. They may have an actual firearms course in their files as well.
If you are looking for an actual shooting/safety course, a nice template to base off of would be the NRA First Steps. You can hang more meat on it's basic skeleton but the material touches on the vast majority of critical issues. |
