Working on a reliability package for a customer. This is not that uncommon.
Breach was .4805 saami spec calls for .480 for 45 ACP case rim. Not a lot of room for error. Open it up to .485 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Do you recommend this work to barrels that are not completely shot out? Recently picked up a Colt series 70 with the collet style bushing and toying with the idea of getting some work done to it.

Collet bushings break. I recommend changing the bushing for sure. Depending how many rounds through the barrel you can either have a Kart or similar barrel gunsmith fit at the same time and then have this type of work done. The crown type of work is aesthetic mostly.

Even newer colts have slides that rattle. Ya probably got yourself a darn nice shooter. Just keep an eye on the bushing when cleaning.

Got some more slide work done today. I had already done the ball cuts but now it was time to add the French line.
I don’t normally go through the serrations but in this case they were going to be removed when I added the carry cuts. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Beautiful work Brett,
What wall thickness do you leave at the barrel bushing locking lug channel when doing carry cuts?

Usually the carry cuts are no deeper than .025”. So the thickness issue shouldn’t be an issue unless the bushing locking lug channel is over-cut. But of course measure first. I was tired when I wrote this so it was sorta short sorry MV. So what I did was measure the thickness and then determined how much I could take off and be safe. I ended up .030” on these because of the depth of the FCS. Which left me with .0175” at the bushing locking slot. .016” is a nice safe thickness here so I’m good. There are ways to deal with this if it’s not thick enough and the slot is over cut but thankfully I didn’t need to do that as it adds a bit of work. That looks very nice Brett. Is that an EGW bushing?

Deluxe magwell blend. First step is to tighten up that fit b doing away with any wiggle or play and ensuring fit is right up against that frame. Then machine for a larger mouth, and lastly blend blend blend! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Fitting an ambi safety goes so much further than just a mechanical fit. Reshape to follow the lines of the frame, do away with sharp edges and overhand then re bevel and smooth it out.

This gun had a very short ramp which causes issues with feeding when rounds nose dive into it. Optimal length is about .400” and it was in the .340 range. It is now .405”. The barrel has been reamed, the throat set back to accommodate the longer (setback) ramp and then throated to allow reliable chambering of ball, hollow point and semi wad cutter ammo.

Fitting a Stan Chen Gen 2 magwell
Typical of a smooth MSH it was raised and since I wasn’t checkering it this wouldn’t go away. So I need to blend it to the frame. Then apply the vertical serrations the customer requested. Still have some blending to do. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Finally!!! Someone saw the light!
I mean the customer by the way. Did you get them the VZ grips in that profile too? I would love to see how they match up. Obviously well done. I am betting we will see the funnel blending next. And is it just my eyes or us the frame aluminum?

Frame is aluminum, it’s a Colt lightweight commander.
The VZ grips came in with the gun, so if they aren’t too thin I will be modifying them to fit. Oh yeah of course I’ll be blending it next. Which will be interesting because it’s aluminum and the distance down to the grip bushings is minimal. Your average customer even though paying 1000-2000 dollars on a gun, still don’t want to pay 250 for a magwell. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

WC BP parts are machined from a solid piece of billet where they’re regular line and S&As are castings. The machined parts are more precise and are finished better. Which is great for the average customer purchasing but when you do as much alteration and finishing work as I do it really doesn’t matter. Plus it allows me to save customers some money on parts. The only reason I am saying this is to draw a comparison in price between a WC BP part and Chen Gen 2, and to say that that one is actually unique. I wish more people would try the Chen Gen 2 to see what I am talking about. To me it is worth the price.

You do the work the customer asks for. You can make recommendations but if it doesn’t appeal to them then you do as they ask. While the Chen is shorter it is very wide. And some really do not like the full wrap around the front type magwell. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Looks very nice. How much of the frame’s mag well is milled off?

It should also be added that the amount removed is exactly the amount added back by magwell. No changes to overall length of grip.
I am very excited to see you work on one, Brett. And I get the "customer gets what customer wants". I am just saying that I was really impressed by the Gen 2. And I am not sponsored by Stan in any way. This is my personal opinion.

Like I said, I wonder if the thin grips will look weird with it? If they do, then I’ll get some standard thickness ones. Awesome work!! |

Wow, those old school style serrations got me thinking about flat-topping the slide and adding them to the Colt you have of mine. Yelled at by the wife or add more to the build... decisions decisions.
