Some quick notes.
This is a Federal Building. Don't carry a gun inside. LEOs have their own rules - the rest of you, no guns. They will have a check-in procedure for pocket knives. Expect to slow the line down. The line will be long. Security at Federal Buildings is run by the US Marshall Service. They are not the TSA. They're thorough and competent. Please respect the Marshalls. Please respect the process. Though not without a sense of humor, screw with them at your peril. You MUST have a valid State/Federal ID to enter the building. The line will be long (yes, I know I mentioned that already). Get there in time to be seated quietly and efficiently. There is no standing in the courtroom. There will be two overflow rooms. The Deputies will direct you if the main courtroom is full. The Bradys will be there. So will LCAV (or whatever they've named themselves this week). I expect (demand) that our folks be respectful. They're easy to spot. They look like they just pooped a pineapple. Give them a genuine sweet smile. We're winning after all. Feel free to go up and introduce yourselves. Thank them for coming. Mention something about being present while history is being made. Offer a hug. j/k Please please please introduce yourself to someone you've never met before (like me). I like to get to know all the people who attend these events. Introduce yourselves to Don Kilmer, Alan Gura, Alan Gottlieb, Brandon Combs and Gene Hoffman, too. See if you can get them to buy you a drink. First one who gets all 5 to buy them a drink gets a special prize out of the goody box! Just yell "BINGO" so we know it's you. Finally, don't forget to be generous and gracious to your servers and bartenders. These folks work hard. Give them some money. If you happen to know anyone who hasn't bought a ticket yet but still wants to come, we'll be accepting cash and credit cards at the door. Don't be afraid to invite a Brady or two. There will also be prizes.... There is no standing in

If you see a guy with a grey suit, red shirt and patriotic tie, LEAVE ME ALONE! Just kidding, say hello. |

Everyone else, I got no clue who you are or what you look like, but I'm sure I'll meet some of you regardless. Hmmm, on second thought, I bet google has some pictures of these guys... Thanks for the reminder to leave the 'ol jacknife in the car.

I am now at Zingari's near the bar. A time to show up wasn't specified as far as I know, so I thought I'd arrive a little early just in case. I'm the guy in the gray sweatshirt with the iPad mini.

...didn't make the court arguments, but attended the lunch...
I cannot comment on the legal aspect, but I can say that we have the GREATEST group of folks, and the smartest group of folks, working extremely hard for our cause... I am totally HONORED to be associated with such an effort. My complete thanks, and deepest appreciation to the entire "group" and their efforts. It's an honor to be associated with such people. PS We had a blast too, LOL...

So the final arguments IMO went very well for us. The CG attorneys seemed very well prepared, and of course were very well versed in all the relevant current and past cases, and gave very good arguments that the other side seemed to be lost trying to counter.
Speaking of the other side, 2 of the 3 attorneys seemed to be pretty decently prepared, but their arguments were very week (again, IMO), and it was actually hard to believe that THEY believed what they were saying, I don't even think they necessarily agreed with what they were going on about, it was just their job. The last attorney (from the Hawaii case) was utterly unprepared, and really had no clue what she was talking about, it was actually hard to watch. The lunch was great, good to meet so many of the CalGunners, and the CG legal team, great bunch of guys that obviously bust their butts for our 2a rights.

After Yolo's counsel was up, we started taking bets on how soon it will be before the Ninth starts mandatory drug testing. Honestly, some of us were wondering if maybe there was a mistake and he was arguing the wrong case.
The good news is that, according to Yolo's attorney, you can now carry a gun into a bar. It just has to be unloaded.

Coincidentally, I think I ended up sitting right next to you at the lunch. Scrawny white boy, in jeans and a grey jacket, that mostly kept to myself. Other than an interjection or two in your conversation. Thank you JDBerger for putting on a great event! This was my first time attending something like this, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Also thanks to Alan Guru, Don Kilmer, CGF, and everyone else contributing to the fight to regain the ability to practice our civil rights.

That trip was worth the effort.
To sit in a grand courtroom like that and to have judges listen, even crack jokes that were definitely pro-2a, was a once in a lifetime opportunity. To listen to Alan Gura lay out his reasoning in such articulate and self evident manner was worth the price of admission. The lunch was icing on the cake. Well done guys - all we can do now (it would seem) is hope the panel does the right thing. I'll update with some pictures later.... Ned

Upon further reflection...
Something that encouraged me quite a bit during the oral arguments was that it wasn't what I expected. I didn't expect the seats to be that uncomfortable... as a recovering catholic, I haven't sat in pews for quite a while. I didn't expect the courthouse to be so beautiful inside! How the heck all that marble survives earthquakes, I have no idea. I didn't expect the lawyers from the opposition to be quite so out of touch with reality. I was expecting hair-splitting and super fine points... not such general stupidity. I didn't expect the Judges to be so actively attentive. Call me a pessimist, but I kind of expected them to sort of half-listen to the arguments, like I do when I'm in an all-hands meeting at work. They were very actively engaged, asking good pointed questions, and issuing a handful of smack-downs. I didn't expect to be able to get to the courthouse from Santa Clara in 50 minutes flat... but getting there early meant being able to get a seat inside. All in all, a great experience to see history's steps as they are happening. |

I felt like he had been handed the case about 10 minutes before he stood up to talk. If this is the way he argues all of his cases, he should consider a career change.

As I didn't have the luxury of listening to the audio multiple times and I was already a little punch drunk from the astonishing realization that he came to court completely unprepared (some of us actually were wondering if he was arguing the wrong case initially) it's entirely possible that I may have misstated what he said (though not what I heard).
You should come to Oral Arguments some time, Fabio. The rest of the Michel team managed to make it.

This thread is (now) for the after-arguments lunch and gathering (and probably need not stay open much longer).
Discussion of the content and presentation has moved here - http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=653230 - as have the 3 posts that used to be in this thread.
