My vote is for .308. Thats what I use.
.243, 30-30, 30-06, .300, 7.62x39/54 are all very capable rounds

I know what to ask Santa for next year
Although shot placement is key, I'd say at least a .243win. If you have a 5.56 and come up on a large pig and/.or far distance, you might not have enough energy for a "good" shot. My happy medium is my .270win Savage. Doesn't destroy too much meat and I prefer it's trajectory over a -.06 but it's just personal preference. Gonna put if for sale, but will ended up with another!

I was with a buddy at Island Mountain outside Garberville in the early 70's, when he shot a sow that weighed just over 700lbs field dressed. God as my witness, he killed it with one pure luck shot with a .22! The day before, his dad shot a 150 boar between the eyes at 40yrds with a .44mag. Pat was straddling it to cut it's throat. Soon as he did, it came too from being knocked out. Picture Jethro Bodine riding a stuck bleeding pizzed off hog. We still laugh about it. We never submitted any for a record, never occurred to us. They got butchered and ate. |

Thank you to all and your responses, I bought a Ruger All American 30 06. Very nice bolt and pad. It also comes with a pre mounted rail and swivels.
Out the door at BPS $461. Brian compared it with higher end guns. The safety placement is right where it should be. Ill p/u on 1-6-2014. Pig hunt on the 26. Ill take pics and report on the results of the All American. Thanks Cal Guns! |

Now that's a hog! Where was that taken?
What ever caliber you have, it never seems enough when one of those comes after you. Rifle, big bore handgun, and a cell phone....cause there ain't any pay phones up in a tree. |

Graphic pics, but it'll give you a better idea for shot placement.

That pic is a trick pic. Notice how far back the people are from the hog (which makes the hog look so much bigger)
Thats a nice hog but i'm guessing in the 450 range. (maybe) |

I have been hunting wild hog in CA since the mid 80s. Never seen anything over 400 lbs myself. Think I'd lose my mind if I saw anything 800 lbs.
Seen a few recommend 7.62x54r....for any pig over 100 lbs best is a 180 grain soft point at 200 yards or less. Otherwise it's just gonna be along walk in the brush to find where it went to die. 150s will work if your shot placement is spot on. Best shot is just behind the shoulder quarting away from you so you don't get that big band of cartilage that goes shoulder to shoulder and around the chest. It can be up to an inch or more thick. Have seen hogs shot at 30 yards and had .44 mag rounds pulled out of that cartilage that didn't penetrate. Oh yea, they can run about 30 miles per hour...for a mile or more so...you ain't gonna be outrunning one you ticked off. happy hunting.

As for double rifles, Cabelas has a line of Sabatti. Can't vouch for the quality because I've never shot one, but they seem to fit the hand well and look decent.

800 pound wild California hog? Love to see the pics. All the elk I've shot have been smaller than that.
That pic above is not an 800 pound hog imo. It's the old Roland Martin picture trick.

No, Kurt is 330 lbs and the kids were leaning on the pig when I took the picture. I promise you this is no trick photography. I am not that smart, after we 1/8th it all of the pig got bagged. We took turns weighing the 10 bags and it all weighed 804 lbs. burlap bags are not that heavy.

Did not know there were recorded records for pigs. To be honest I didn't thi k any one cared this much about a nuisance animal. I would think that avid hunters would want the recognition.
As for us... Not interested in public exposure or recognition. I'm sure most people would. For instance I hunt underwater mostly. I have caught many 15-25lb lobsters. When I do I seldom take a picture or contact newspaper. Unlike the gentleman that caught a 18 lb 2 weeks ago at HB pier. Look at all the flack he got for not releasing it. No thanks. I am not synicle or a liar. Just a old guy who loves the outdoors! Happy New Year! Thank you Cal Guns for all that you do to preserve our 2 amendment! |

I want to try a pig hunt with my M1. I'm thinking 180 gr solids at about 2700 should do it. That will be my excuse to get an adjustable gas plug.
For the record I have .223, .243, .257, 6.5 x 55, 30-30, .308, 280 Remington and a bolt 30-06. My M1 is my only semi auto rifle. |

My pig gun:
18.5" barreled 308. 1-3x scope which I leave turned down to 1x magnification most of the time.

Smarquez---Solids are illegal to hunt with. They also do not expand.
A Barnes/Hornady GMX/Nosler E-Tip are not considered solids as they expand. Why the need to hunt with a semi-auto(M1Garand)? It will work, with expanding bullets, but one of the larger bolt actions( not the 223/243) would be better to hunt with. Have you ever hunted before? Do you have a hunting lic? Plese check the hunting regulations before you hunt. That might save you from an expensive run in with Fish and Game.

6.8 SPC
I have not personally hunted pigs with it yet, but as I was assembling my 6.8SPC, I spent a good amount of time talking with quite a few hunters on the Hog forums that have gone to the 6.8SPC for hogs.

Would not recommend for nubs but I have been killing pigs with 223 (flame suit on). I posted my last one on JHO and he was somewhere between 150-175 lbs and it was a one shot drop:

I like using 3 rifles for pig hunts. The 250lb pig on the picture was taken with a Remington 700 VTR .308 rifle. I also have a Tikke t3 lite in 308 and a Marlin 336 in 30-30 that I use for pig hunts. And for side arm, I like using Glock 20 in 10mm. My next rifle I am considering is a Sako Finnlight 85 in 300Winmag for some Alaska big game hunts.

Meh, 223 was never really designed as a hunting round. If you look into its history you will see it was originally developed and designed for the m16 back in the 60s. I mean i guess anything can get the trick done but i would want something with a bit more oomph in case you come across a big one.
I'd probably go with lever action carbines at 357mag ,44mag or 30-30. Longer shots i'd want 270 or 308, basically deer caliber stuff. |

Problem with a round like that for most hunter people is that there's not a lot of factory ammo nor a good selection of factory ammo. And the marginal advantage of a unique round, no matter how awesome it is, is irrelevant. At 200-300 yds, it simply will not matter one iota. So it'll be too expensive and difficult to shoot. It's really a reloaders cartridge. Hunters should practice and shoot more than a box a year. I know it's droll, commonplace, and perhaps mundane, but the 30-06 is still the best overall choice. I'd argue that for any new hunter (and pretty much any hunter for that matter) there really is only one choice: '06. There's nothing it can't do as well as any other round and it's everywhere. Sure the 270 is everything the '06 is. As is the 7mag. Fine. And both are great choices too. But I just think that the case has been made for 100+ years.
