Duty Light,
Okay fellow Calgunners, I always turn to your expertise in duty gear. I gotta replace my light. Sucks, been with me since the academy, but I confronted an "individual" last night night and my light just didn't have the effect I wanted it to. What are you guys carrying out there that I should be looking at?

all the time. I use a SL20 as primary and a Fenix (2 x 123a) back up. SL20 carries a whallop.

I carried an SL-20 from 1979-2011, when I retired. During that time I went thru 4 batteries, 5 bulbs and one switch. At one point I had two of them because I was working a very isolated area. I lost my original one about six years ago, but my other one that I bought in 1982 is still going strong. When the Stinger first came out, I got one of those to keep on my belt as a backup.
The SL-20 also makes a great impact weapon when needed. More than one way to make a dirtbag see the light. Great flashlights in my opinion.

Primary-MagCharger w/I believe 800 lumen Terralux conversion bulbs. Can't go wrong with a good maglight. Good size, lumens, and weight to help the "individuals" become enlightened.
Secondary on belt-Streamlight 88040, 600 lumens for $70.00. Put a few hundred rounds through my A.R. with it mounted to the rifle and it is uneffected by the shock and/or recoil, a good and tough light that fits in a Surefire speed holster. Runs on CR123's $24 for 12 good Surefire batteries, will last you quite a while. |

I run a Dereelight when I am in uniform. Will alternate to a Sf Z2 or E2D once in awhile but the Deree is stout, takes rechargeable 18650 and have served me well since I got it 4 years ago.
For plainclothes I am still searching, just got a 5.11 A1 that runs on AA. I am waiting on SF to release the V1 which will allow me to have an IR and visible light in a small package that can be slipped into a pocket. until than the 5.11 A1 is doing nicely. |

I run a SF X300 on my weapon, a SF P6 LED on my belt, and a Pelican 6070 as my primary light. I just want to make sure that I have all my Lights covered. I'm thinking about purchasing a Streamlight SL model LED. I carry a inexpensive spare Fenix Tk something as back up incase another deputy may have forgotten his light if we have to do a search. You can't have enough light!

I've been carrying a PT2L for a couple of years. It's small, light, super bright, and has excellent battery life. It stays on my belt all the time right next to my radio. The SL20 and full size 5.11 light are the main ones I use with a Fenix something or other attached to the door as another backup. The 5.11 isn't great for extended lighting away from the rig but it's 90 seconds to full recharge is a VERY nice feature.

I'm not an LEO, so take this with a grain of salt.
I wrote Fenix to inquire about a flashlight that I could keep on a charger all the time (at home) so I always have one ready to go. They have the RC10 and said it would fit my needs. Comes with a wall mount/ charger. Purchased two of them a week or so ago. Typical well-made LED light. Time will tell if they hold up to sitting on the charger 24 hours a day.

Surefire G2 on the belt. Surefire x300 on the pistol. Streamlight SL20 on my bag.
The SL20 doesn't get a whole bunch of use on day shift but is my workhorse on nights. I borrowed one of the full size Pelicans for an extended traffic control detail. The light weight in my hand was a nice change from the SL20 for that task. |

Streamlight has a new SL series light, the SL-20L multi mode and intensity LED. It works on the standard SL chargers, good because most Deputies/Officers have an SL charger laying around the station. It's size makes it good for an impact weapon in a pinch.

I'm a retired guy from long back who carried an SL-20. Great light, but I wish they would come out with an LED bulb repalcement without having to buy an entire new light. As part of my daily carry, I now have a Surefire P2ZX Fury in my pocket. Good for a back up light. Small easy to use (switched the button to single click, not a twist constant on and 500 lumens. I hear the SLX has a 600 lumen LED conversion by TerraLUX. Haven't seen it though.

Not a Leo, but I love my new Surefire P2X Fury light. 500 lumens and a pretty decent run time. Run an X300 on my Glock, and also keep an E1L in my pocket most days. Looking to pick up a 200 lumen EB1 once they become available.
I have about 10 Surefire torches now and I am very happy with them. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2 |

Use to carry the LAPD Pelican for a little over a year, retired that and now using the Surefire R1 Lawman rechargeable LED. 750 Lumen work light. I also keep a Streamlight SL20L in my front seat bag.
My other dept issued SL20, I put in one of those terra lux heads. Although it was bright, the beam was a wide flood coverage. For lighting up something in the distance was not very good at all. The new SL20L has a dedicated l.e.d. long throw beam from Streamlight that can out for several hundred yards. It is a 300 lumen light with high, med and low output plus a strobe future. It still uses the charging sleeves from the older SL20s as well.

At work, I carry 3 lights on my person. Streamlight SL-20L as primary. Great impact weapon and excellent light output. Streamlight Strion LED on belt as back up, more great light output. Surefire X300 on my Springfield Operator.
The 2 Streamlights have 3 levels of brightness to help conserve battery life and a strobe mode. Great for getting someone's attention if you don't give them a seizure with it. I chose the Strion LED over the Stinger LED due to its size. The LED Stinger looks about an inch longer then the old incandescent Stinger.

I use three lights on patrol as well. The Streamlight SL-20X, a sturdy and reliable light.
On my belt I have an Olight M-20. A fantastic sturdy little light, very bright. I've dropped it, dunked it, and subjected it to the daily abuse of patrol for 2+ years with no issues. Plus it uses rechargable 18650 batteries ($10), or two CR123s. Whats not to love? Lastly, my Streamlight TLR-1S. Great light too.

In the jails here in Santa Cruz County, we use the Streamlight LED's. They are really bright and like mentioned earlier, backed by a lifetime warranty. The strobe setting on them works wonders when someone is combative and/or advancing on you.

I went thru 2 switches (there were problems with the original slide switch), but can't recall how many batteries or bulbs. I still use it around the home and for the 11 years we had a motorhome, I always had it with us. I will admit it doesn't have as much of the original black coloring, but that was a result of removing hanging glass on broken windows at a burglary locations, not for use as an impact weapon, tho I knew it would work in that capacity if needed. I do wish I had bought the Surfire Stinger when it was available to us for $50, but I figured, why, since I had a light. I regret that decision. |

Been using a Pelican 7060LED in my federal detention center. Its bright as hell has two switchs comes with recharger and holster in choice of basket weave or nylon. And has a lifetime warrenty.... which for some reason doesnt cover bear or children under 5. I swear thats what the warrenty says lol.
Also the way its designed when set on the hood of the car it will not roll off. |

When I was on patrol, I carried an ultra stinger as my main light, regular stinger on my belt, and a surefire 6p as a backup. That is apart from the battery lights in my bags as extra backups. I had planned on Terralux'ing everything but was pulled into desk duty. I still was considering upgrading the 6p to an LED until I was introduced to the Fenix line. Now, I use those almost exclusively. That said, if I were to go back out to patrol, the new surefire 600 lumen compact looks like a great belt flashlight. Not sure about a large light, but anything beats the 80-120 lumen lights that were the norm 15-20 years ago.
