Default shooting spot off of Sunset in Banning / Blocked With Big Rocks

Does anyone on here go there? im considering doing somewhat of a "clean up" there Its pretty bad ill take pictures tonight. I go there quite often and wouldnt mind it being cleaned up a little bit. I could meet with people after work and we could work just a few hours a day or something. I have a truck, trailer shovel and whatnot. I plan on doing a Dump trip this weekend as it is.

I'm up there every once in a while to shoot & collect brass. Haven't been up there since some yahoos started the fire at the rock quarry area.

Where did you here that from?
I was there last week. People tell me it is totally legal up there to shoot. That was the first time I had been there. We went way back there. Looks like a lot of people have been shooting up there. Makes me mad they just leave all there crap after shooting it up. Take out what you bring in.

Hello all,

I am new to this site and I joined so that I could get involved in these type of cleanups. I really think this is a great way to give back to the community and keep the outdoor shooting spots open.
Anyone plan on cleaning up this site? Also, any other places closer to the Colton area? I am planning on going out to the Perris spot this weekend to shoot and clean up but I would love to find something closer to home!

thanks!

You must be referring to the "Old Idylwild Road", boy that takes me waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back!

Not sure how to reach from Sunset anymore, it's been nigh on 30 years since I've been out there and I live a loooong way away from there now. I used to go up from San Gorgonio and branch to the right instead of going up 243.

I see it on google maps.

I can see the route you are talking about as well. Do you remember about how far down you go after the turnoff for 243? I suppose I could just drive down there and look for empty shells

I was out there this past weekend with my wife. I took a rake and trash bags because i've noticed a lot of trash is being left behind. I like shooting there because its close to home but its a bummer to see the mess that people leave behind. I only picked up some of it as i would have need to take nothing else in my truck to clean up the mess. Particle board/wood, soda cups, ammo boxes and part of a baby chair? I tried to focus on the trash i was able to rake up ( http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/...a/IMG_0487.jpg ) and put in a bag. I filled a bag and a half with this stuff. I go almost every weekend so next time i'll try to take out some of the wood that is left behind. I know the thought might be to leave the wood for the next guy to use but when its sitting on public land it looks more like it was just dumped there. Bummer to see this and to think that i'm associated with shooters like that.

Thank you very much for that, i will be happy to give you a hand and maybe even make a difference. Im afraid with all of the fires up there lately they may try to shut her down if we cant get it cleaned up. PM me and we can set up a time on the weekend to head up there and do some cleaning, ill be happy to bring a truck and maybe even a trailer.

Banta134,
I live in Yucaipa and would love to find a nearby place where my wife and I can shoot. Where is this place? Is it on Sunset or old Idylwild road?
I've always practiced the old Boy Scout rule of leaving a site cleaner than when you found it.

Yeah I know I was up there and a water department truck came up and was surveying where their land cut off at. He said the county owned most of it but they were trying to get the water department to pay for it all. So I'm assuming they shut it down. It sucks but with the amount of trash people left up there I'm not surprised.

Do you live close enough to that area that you can drive your rhino there? Or do you tow it there and park it somewhere? ive been wanting to take mine up there (after the top end rebuild) but i dont have anywhere to park the truck/trailer.

The dumb people are just spread out in the hills now. Shooting in the wrong directions and leaving their trash everywhere.

Aarghh! Been wanting to try out this spot for a few years now, but never got out there, guess, it's no longer viable now.

Exactly what happened in Glamis... they closed down Competition Hill at night time so everyone went further into the dunes to Oldsmobile Hill and trashed up that place..

are those roads established roads?? I thought that established access roads could not be shut down.

this state is such a joke.. Anywhere people tend to have fun and the gov isn't making some money off the gig they find a way to shut it down.. The people will police themselves if given the chance.. Some people are just dirtbags though so ..

There's a few spots off Old Idyllwild Rd that really need some attention.

I'd be willing to help out but don't have a pickup truck to haul stuff out. Lemme know if any of you guys are interested.

Default shooting spot off of Sunset in Banning / Blocked With Big Rocks

So an update to this I have gone here the last two weekends in a row....barricades are gone. However the shotgun casings are insane....

For reference this specific part is actually not BLM land....this is actually a private quarry. It is flanked by BLM land in patches as well as native american owned land (i believe Morongo).

This place is definitely somewhat demolished....i noticed a recliner out there this last weekend that had to be brought in....in the last two weeks. I could be good with an organized clean up and shoot.

Plus it would be good to meet some fellow cal gunners 👍

Default It's open and messy

Went there Monday and it was open - so much trash - this was my first time going to a BLM site where shooters were in numbers and I was really disappointed at the amount of trash. One of the regulars there told me that there used to be abandoned "stolen" cars down in the ravine and those, at least, are gone.

Good to know that people on this forum care about the mess and clean it up... I usually come prepared with trash bags when I go on hikes in the wilderness because there are usually dumped cigarettes, diapers, and beer bottles scattered about but this place is beyond a few trash bags - more like a few dumpsters, some long-lines to haul out all the tires, and I don't know what could be done to pick up all the shotgun shells that are mashed into the gravel. Really sad but at least it's in one place...

I vote to keep it open because if it does get blocked off again by those boulders (I bet BLM didn't put them there but local property owners might have) then those same pigs who destroyed that canyon will just do it somewhere else...

The real reason I joined this forum was to see if anyone knows what business used to make its home there? Someone said a quarry was there but, if so, where is the man-made hole in the ground?

The spot you were at was the Quarry/ Cement plant when the Colorado water aquduct was drilled underground thru hills back in the '30's
Starts in a secert spot in that area and comes out on the other side in the Hemet valley

That Platue of Gravel and rocks came out of the huge Tunneling project
And they used the water that used to flow in the revine to mix with .
There used to be a structure across the revine and other foundations if you know where to look .
Also just as you get to the shooting area , There is a cement bunker on the right ..Dynamite Storage !!!!/ It's used as a out-house now !!!!

I've been to the opening and spillway on the Hemet side . Building is to the East of State st at Soboba rd. very impressive to walk on the grates and see how much water flows thru there

Hewel Houser ( Cal Gold PBS Show ) Did a whole show about the tunnel

Where Highland Springs road ends ( South side of hwy 10 ) way against the Hills there is another Huge........I mean Huge , Platue of rocks and gravel from inside the mountain. Also a couple large metal hatches that must go to the aquduct itself . Also a Lot of foundations of other buildings / Long Gone

Also back in those hills is a old " Lockhead " rocket test base .
Cement Rocket test platform and Quansat hut buildings
BUT .

Thats another story...............................

About those boulders in the road ........................

A while back there was a Problem as to 'Who owned the dirt '/ whose responsibilty was the mess

So a in depth survey was done of the area / Wood markers were everywhere
Turns out its owned by the water district ,So they solved the problem by putting those large boulders in the road

Well...........Wouldn't ya know it .A fire started back there
And Cal Fire was blocked entrance by those boulders . Fire grew !!!!!!!!!!
Dozer took care of the rocks . But . Don't piss off Cal Fire

Water District was told to Keep that road Open !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought this is one of the spots specifically mentioned as illegal to shoot at in the Riverside county shooting ordinance?

Either way, it's had a sad history with people posting all about it here on Calguns and then even more people trashing the place. I wish nobody had mentioned it was open again.

My group and I did some checking with the public records for the county....found the land owner (who lives in Florida). According to public record it is owned by a private individual who tried to sell the property but didnt succeed.

Nontheless if anyone wants to go up and have a cleanup and shooting day....i would be down...im sure I can come up with three to 5 others as well to come with me.

Let me know. I live 2 blocks off of S. Sunset Ave. I usually take a few trash bags and a rake with me and do what I can.
