i drive a crown vic
it is an old lapd car, it has two spotlights (driver and passenger sides) is there a law about what position the lights need to be in while i am driving?
in the time that i have owned the car i have always kept the lights down and pointed at the windshield. my question is am i going to be harassed if i have the lights up and pointing forward? |

Just keep them pointed down. And if you are afraid of getting in trouble get some covers for the lights. I have aux lights on my Jeep and I know you are supposed to keep them covered.

The only lights that can be uncovered while on the highway are DOT-approved lights. Those usually have SAE or DOT on the lens. Since those spotlights do not usually have covers, you have to keep them pointed down.

That is what I was looking for, the DOT approved. Basically what this gentleman stated.

Seen that happen a few times, sometimes resulting in the spotlight cracking the windshield.

I was just going to say, "I'm sorry" but yeah, just keep them pointed down. It is legal to use them for finding addresses and street signs. Just don't shine them at anyone. A lot of Taxi cabs have them and they were a popular accessory in the 50's.

I see people braking- braking hard- when they spot a cop
Even if freeway traffic is going at 50MPh- they still brake Reflex from chronic speeders Do people really clear the way for your crown vic?

Now that the crown vic is no longer being produced, I think less people will slow down when they see a crown vic. The new ford interceptor looks badass too!

Ugh... The new ford interceptor wont catch On. A coule of agencies are trying them out, looks like a " geek squad " car.
The car will be too expensive To maintain and fix, especially since its turbocharged. Its alot more encomonical To use the crown vic as a police car in the end. |

Crown Vics were discontinued, as well as the Mercury Gran Marquis, Lincoln TownCar, etc, for political reasons, that being able to achieve government-mandated mpg's. It does not apply to light trucks, SUV's and the like. I believe the Chrysler 300's with the BIG hemi engines are getting slapped with a "gas guzzler" surcharge in the area of $2000.
Doesn't matter how you display your spotlights. I have two on my pickup and sometimes they're in the up position, sometimes down. So long as they have clear DOT-approved bulbs and you have only two forward facing spotlights, the CVC says you are good to go. Just don't shine them on a moving vehicle or you'll have some explaining to do. |

Why anyone would own an old cop car is beyone me. Why would you even want people to think for a split second that perhaps there is a cop next to them on the road. Not too bright in my view.
Also, the new Ford Taurus 6 cylinder smokes the V8 Dodge, according to my buddy that works EVOC at LASD in Pomona. I was surprised to hear that.

That's total BS. I test drove the new SHO Taurus and it is the biggest POS on the road. Push your right food and the f****in car actually slows down.

I test drove a SHO with the performance package. I was actually quite surprised. I don't know if yo;u got a lemon or what....but the one I test drove hauled booty and handling was surprisingly good.

Of course, I naturally compare it to the 1995 SHO I once owned which drove like a BOOH...whenever I kicked it in to passing gear (auto tranny) I would have to hold the f*** on!!! |

The " Bluesmobile " 1974 Dodge Monaco /// Elwood said, "It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas." COOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Last edited by Eat Dirt; 11-04-2012 at 12:21 PM.. |

I enjoy driving the crown Victoria its a strong reliable car and most of the time police departments keep them well maintained. The car I bought was used to patrol lax ( or so I was told) service record says it was serviced every month or so. I have owned the car for 2 years now and only thing I have replaced is the right rear axle shaft.
Being that most police officers drive the living **** out of their cars I think i got lucky with mine |
