Default 40 S&w 155grain and alliant red dot

Reloading 40 S&W for my glock 22. Using 155 grain projectiles and alliant red dot powder. Any advice on how many grains of powder I should use? Want a light load

I went right down the middle, then minus 1 grain. Red dot & rem factory FMJs once used ranger .40 brass tumbled in walnut media. RCBS rock chucker set up.

Shot nicely.

Hmm... interpolate

Lee chart:

150 gr
wsuper-fld 6.8 start 7.7 max
red dot 5.3 start 6.9 max

155 gr
wsuper-fld 6.5 start 7.3 max
red dot insert interpolation here.... 5 -- 6.5

maybe someone else has tried it already.

Awesome. I've got a Dillon 650 and am new to reloading. I'm using once fired Winchester brass with sierra fmj 155 grain blunt nose bullets

4.0g Red Dot with the bullet at 1.135 COL should get you 900 fps out of a 4.5" barrel. I shoot 180g cast bullets out of my M&P 40 and have gone down as low as 3 grains Red Dot with full cycling. 2.8g caused the slide to not lock on the last shot about 50% of the time so 3.0g was the min for me.

The 4.0 load with the 155g bullets should give about the same recoil as a full power 9mm which means "pretty light". (IPSC Power Factor = 145). You also have lots of margin and can probably go up to 5.0g and still have some safety so long as you don't seat the bullet much shorter.

Typically what I do when "working down" loads is start at a reasonable load and start dropping until I start having cycling problems or start getting sooty cases. Hodgdon Clays is a great powder for this because it is very good at burning cleanly and generated high pressures without high velocities. But Red Dot/Promo is almost as good, it just leaves a lot of unburned flakes as you go down in pressure.

Hope that helps.

Load some variations and go test it??? That's half the fun of reloading!

Thanks for the advice. Heard 40 has a tendency to explode, especially in a glock. So since im a novice at reloading I wanted to be safe rather than sorry

The problem with fast powders is that they generate full pressure without very much speed. Loaders then try to get standard or full speed loads by increasing the charge without knowing what they are doing. The first thing to let go in a Glock with an unsupported chamber is typically the part of the case that is unsupported.

An ignorant loader trying to get Power Pistol speeds using Red Dot will be capable of blowing up any gun.

You'll be ok so long as you don't exceed published loads and read your loading manuals.

Providing you are:

A) Heeding load data (as mentioned above)
B) Not egregiously exceeding SAAMI recommendations, etc

And

Firing said loads out of a well maintained and "healthy" Glock you are fine.

FWIW the whole specter of Glock "kaboom" is real, although rare. Moreover, to my knowledge it has always been serious TOOLS (as mentioned by previous poster) who blow up Glocks.

My G22 in 40 got fed approximately 400-500 hand loads, using red dot and Winchester projectiles. No problem, not one. I had no greater joy than improving my marksmanship & enjoying those "lighter" loads. Never performed a chrono, just shot them... ALOT !!!

Another Question:

Like I said, I am new to reloading and am wondering how I can tell that I have the proper crimp on my rounds. I'm using a Dillon Precision 650

No real need for a crimp on the 10mm. Neck tension from proper resizing is sufficient to hold the bullet in. If you are expanding the case prior to seating the bullet (and it should be a very tiny flare, just enough to get the bullet started and not shave anything off as you seat it), then the "crimp" is used only to bring the case mouth back to vertical or barely inward. The 10mm headspaces on the case mouth so you don't want it to go in very much.

Same rule applies for a .40 S&W? I know they use the same projectile

First off, you probably don't need to crimp especially if you're loading light loads. Crimping protect the round from having the bullet seat deeper during heavy recoil. And, deeper means more pressure and more danger. But moreover, the 40 S&W head spaces off the mouth of the case. If you don't know what that means then go back and buy a couple of loading manuals and read them.

Anyways, since the 40 head spaces off the mouth, you can only crip using a tapper crimping die and not the roll crimping portion of most seating dies if that's what you have.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a tapper crimp. I adjusted it just enough so the mouth was brought back in after the brass was flared

From the pics, crimp looks a little tight. Just crimp enough to remove the bell from the flaring die. To be sure, try pulling the bullet from one and see if you have an indentation, at most it should be very slight.

Just bought some 180 grain projectiles. Judging by the fact there's no load data for red dot and 40 s&w, do you think they'll be okay with 4 grains of powder?

KShack...not claiming to be an expert, so YMMV, but here is what I run with a Glock 23 without issue. Bullets are 180 gr. Xtreme RNFP and Hornady 165 gr. XTP HP. The barrel (in the pic) is a stock Glock 23. I personally run a KKM in mine. Again, this is for comparison purposes only.
