Default A tale of two Glocks

A few years back I decided the G23 was the gun to carry. It started a circular journey of modification/customization that after 3+ years ended near where I started.
1) stainless guide rod
2) night sights
3) polished "trigger"
4) lighter trigger bar
5) grip enhancement
6) aluminum mag. baseplate
7) extended mag release
8) G22 smooth trigger

All this based on "suggestions" on line and from my local Glockstore. In the end I had a heavier gun and a lighter wallet.

Today I've returned to near stock form. I kept the smooth trigger and night sights (blacked out the rear).

My lower back is happier and my G23 is back to what I intended to be: a lightweight SD pistol.

Any other victims of marketing and Internet needed mods/customization who've seen the error and returned to the beautiful simplicity of the black brick.

With the exception of sights and maybe a spot to attach a light, I tend to leave firearms stock. Folks would be much better off taking that money they want to,spend in custom parts and take a quality firearms class. This isn't anything new. I had these same kinds of discussions over 20 years ago.

In reading posts about Glock mods and improvements, it seems that everyone finds the Glocks better untouched and end up reverting back to stock.

I did just about the same thing as yourself. "Blinged" mine out, now it's back to near stock with just night sights, grip tape, and the extended mag release(stock one makes me reposition my hand). Better left untouched.

I added a Ghost Ultimate drop-in connector for mine. Couldn't be happier.

I'd like to get night sights and get the extended mag release. All in good time.

I think if its a safe baby or the occasional target pistol all the bling and "improvements" are inconsequential and fun, not to mention an excellent way to help stimulate the economy. But, in the end if its a pistol I'm going to trust with the life of my family I don't want to wonder if something I changed could "fail". If I need to ask others if they've had reliability issues with any modification, better not to modify.

I'm pro Glock, but they are far from perfection out of the box... Same with practically any non-custom handgun.

Unfortunately, very, very, few of us mere mortals get to carry in Santa Clara county. I'm envious of those in areas where the 2A is recognized as the inalienable right that it is, and are able to exercise that right.

I have chosen to keep my stuff basically stock. Have upgrades some with better triggers, night sights, and grips, but no real custom work. All are excellent, accurate tools that work great. I do plan on performing the .25 cent trigger job on my G34 in the near future. But I think that is as far as I will go. After an initial break in period, they are nice right out of the box. And seem to get even better with age!

I smooth up the trigger and add night sights, but that's it. My IDPA gun gets a 3# connector, but I don't think it actually makes that much difference at the end of the day. I need to add some grip tape to my G30, the outside of the grip is starting to smooth out after years of daily IWB carry.

Glock is the second best plastic gun. My vote goes to Steyr. But there is not much aftermarket for it.

If Steyr's were so good, they would be more popular to LEO's, Competitors and Civilians which would drive an aftermarket.

The only thing you need to change on any Glock is the sights, and then put about 75,000 rounds thru it.

If Steyrs were awesome, then all the competitive shooters would be running them, they are not

I still like the extended slide release on the Glocks. That is a must have that even Glock puts on as stock on some models.

The G34,G35,G17L and G24 come that way, but I have seen alot of guys thumb the slide stop and cause the magazine to disconect.

But in a carry gun how many changes until your life is in danger. Here in Sunny D, I see Gstore convincing people to turn SD guns into Frankenstien guns for $$$$.

Yeah ... I've been that route too .. 3.5 connectors polished recoil rods and no captive spring assemblies ..I'm back to bone stock except for those silly Big Dot sights that I thought I really needed .

I have only ever added night sights - even then, I regret changing from stock sights. I am fortunate to not have dumped money on unnecessary additions.

At one point in time I felt like I needed all these "enhancements" to my Glock. First was the extended mag release which sounded like a great idea at the time, but when I finally got installed it, the release jutted out way too much than what I was accustomed to. Back to stock it went!

Aside from a functional set of night sights that can be used during the day that replaced the really dim night sights I got, I also did the 25 cent trigger job and my Glock and I have been happy ever since.

The only mods I have done are night sites and extended slide releases on my carry guns. Honestly, after watching what GZ is going through, I may revert to 100% factory.

Taking into consideration what the gun is going to be used for. Personal protection and carry guns should mostly remain stock. If its your range recreational gun why not have a little fun.

I agree. It's sad that I feel the need to make my gun less shootable because some piece-of-crap, gun-hating prosecutor will use that to hang me.

I guess I better make sure I never have the need to shoot somebody of a different race than me.
