RE: Reno

So I've got some good news and some bad news.

My guy in Reno is willing to allow us to use his land, but summer/fall months are a no-go due to fire danger. He says November through May would be fine for a shoot (given enough notice).

November would be less than 1 month after SSZS 9.5 and December through about March is cold (freezing) there. Tail end of March or April? Once we're in to April, we may run into a scheduling conflict with an event he hosts there (Cola Warrior West) and may conflict with SSZS 10!.

So, what say you (all)?

New guy (to the SSZS events) here, went through the thread and basically the 9.5 shoot is in-between event for the official SSZS events?

another noob-ish question: where do I sign up lol

9.5 is an “official” event. The law abiding gun family hosts 2 SSZS events
a year, hence the point 5 designation. You can sign up to bring pot luck items in the official thread once the dates are decided. It is a great crowd and we have a BLAST. Pun intended....

I spent the first half of the day shooting today...stopped for a sandwich on the way home and was wearing my SSZS 9.0 shirt. A little kid, probably 8 years old, saw the back of it and started talking to his mom about zombies and how they need to have a 4wd truck if zombies take over the world so they can get away, but they don't want to go in to the forest because that's where all of the zombies will be.

Hella funny. Mom played right along with it too. Good times, crappy sandwich, pointy elbows.

Full moon brightness is Oct 26-27-28 (Fri-Sat-Sun)

Crescent moons (waning?) are Nov 2-3-4 (Fri-Sat-Sun)

Best mostly dark moon weekend is Nov 9-10-11 (Fri-Sat-Sun)

I actually don't mind the dark nights - makes for some good flame shooting and campfire debauchery.

That being said, our current luck running seems we like to pick the one weekend out of a month where the weather is less than ideal.

Regardless - I plan on being there.

Maybe Chris Costa will show up again...

Binary targets are illegal in CA. we make sure to keep it 100% legal so that we don't run afoul of the law and jeopardize future events.

I like those dates, problem is some people will say no because of Halloween parties. Not me, but some people.

You know, the SSZShoots share a lineage with the OG "OLL / Area52/53" shoots that took place in NV
I was fortunate enough to attend the only (AFAIK) Area 53 Shoot, tho I missed the Area 52 one. Ours was outside of Lovelock, Nevada on BLM land. We were about 30 miles off the pavement in BFE. My son, nephew and I rented a RV trailer and drove the 650 miles there. My nephew towed his off road toy (Sand Rail IIRC).

As we pulled into the camping area that was set up (most of the people were already there having come from the Bay Area) one of the many small rocks on th ground ran up to and attacked one of the trailer tires and punctured it. We discovered El Monte RV doesn't supply a spare tire or jack (Damn them and their fear of liability issues). Thanks to one of the members tho, we used his jack and tools to remove the tire and drive an 1 1/2 back to Lovelock to get it fixed.

An old Chevy Biscayne pick up (only the body and chassis) had been abandoned on site. To move it to the shooting area, it was decided to drag it. The same member who lent us his jack had a couple of tow straps but his 250 4x4 Ford couldn't do it because the leaf springs would dig into the dirt. Someone had the brilliant idea to put it on its side. The tow straps were secured to it and placed on each side. The group split in half with some on one side and some on the other. They held the straps tight to balance the truck and the Ford was put into action again. With some excellent driving and great strength/balancing by the members, it was successfully moved to the range area.

Someone () brought 11lbs. of Tannerite and it was divided up into smaller amounts and placed on the truck. The shooting began and pieces of the truck went flying in the air as the explosions occurred. While this was going on, we got a surprise visit from a BLM Ranger. I asked him how he knew we were out there and he said he just followed the signs. I had forgotten one of the members had made metal directional signs and posted them along the off road route. He was cool and after watching the Tannerite blow up he left, telling us to have a good time.

Green glow sticks were put onto the truck at night to aid the shooters. When the Tannerite blew, the sticks flew into the air and made for a nice show.

Good times, but what a long drive (1300 miles round trip for us, not sure how many for the two guys from L.A.)

BTW, I'm for Oct. and I think no moon would be great, perhaps we can see a large amount of stars.

Let's do it after the election. That way, if Cox wins, we can really celebrate.
