A little morbid, but I think it would be good to change the titles of deceased members from junior member, member, senior member, etc, to DECEASED, RIP, or something of that nature.

Just a thought I had.

The other thing I was going to say was an email newsletter, probably monthly, that runs down the different issues we are facing, site upgrades, meetups, and other things of importance.

Let's do a mock up and present it to kes for approval, then start working it. Nobodies ever gonna do it unless we do it ourselves.

Brilliant suggestion. Monthly is right, I get dailies from some sites and it is so frequent I turn it off.

Spammers are irritating. A ten post minimum before being able to start a thread might help put a stop to it ...
I believe that is how they stop spam on the m14 forum.

actually, I prefer that they start a new thread instead of posting a reply.

reason being, its easier to find and delete. if they start a thread, I can then just delete the thread. if they post a spammy reply, then I have to go into the thread to delete the reply and anybody who quoted the spammer.

spammer thread titles normally just sound wrong and are fairly easy to spot so they can be deleted.

If I wanted to throw my hat in the ring to help moderate forums, what would I need to do, or who would I contact? I post often in numerous forums. I get along with people, am decent, fair, have a lot of time to donate and want to see this site succeed. Should I contact Libraian, Kesteyll, others?

Regards,

There's a browser script or two floating around the internet for that. I checked with vB.org for hacks awhile back but there was nothing, at least for our version of vB. We're running 3.8.8 and CG is 3.8.9. I recall the browser script was coded by a forum member and worked as an add-on for Firefox. It completely filtered content by a specific member at the browser level, apparently keying in on the username field in the page render, unlike the ignore list where one still sees content that is quoted, threads which are started and a teaser where the ignored member has posted. I've always thought the stock ignore feature, at least how ours is configured, is kinda weak.

Yeah, I've noticed that a lot today. Thought it might be my cell connection with all the snow but other sites are fine. It comes and goes. Our forum gets a lag when we're running backgrounds (IP checks) on members or the database is backing up. Unknown on CG. Admins probably have the answer to that. We try to set the database and background stuff to run in the middle of the night EST.

Sounds cool but is a lot of work. However, hobby forums tend to be more sedate, at least IME. The most contentious forum I moderate, now going on five years, chews up a couple hours per day. TBH, we've never picked anyone who's asked, rather select members to approach after discussion with other moderators and the site owner. If they asked me today I'd say thanks but no! However, a PM to any of the mods or admins would likely be one path.

On that topic, I noticed a quite long thread today discussing previously banned members or past members, including a few references to person's apparent real life names or information. Is that OK here? I guess CG isn't 'anonymous' but am unclear how much personal public discussion is permitted, especially in absentia.

Oh, suggestion.... unless I missed it, the PM system doesn't allow limited attachments as the post system does. I think that would be, of course subject to the member attachment limits, a nice addition so members can share attachments from their computer or phone privately without having to host them. I noted UBB IMG code is on to insert pictures from web sources as it is in post.

Thanks for the resource and hope the new year is a prosperous one.

Here's one that benefits all of us. An email notification when a post comes up with a keyword you're interested in. Wanna buy a Ruger LC9? Type it in like you would for an eBay notification. Like eBay, we should be notified by calguns when something is posted we're looking for. Would be "yuge" for both buyer and seller. Hey tech guy, could get this up and running by Friday? On time and under budget!

Kirk out.

Since members make liberal use of posting images in signature lines and I was just reading a marijuana thread with a gigantic animated map of the US in the signature line of every post of one member who's made a lot of posts in the thread can the administrator please throw the vB switch that shuts off signature publication more than once by any one poster in any one thread? I've noted on CG that members trend to large signature publications, often vastly dwarfing any topical content they contribute. We do this on our forum and threads are a lot less cluttered and everyone still gets their personal expression. Thanks!

You know you can turn sigs off via User CP, right?

(The big ones are annoying. I got sick of that kid eating a lemon slice. )

Yes, as an admin myself I am aware of that but I also find signatures to generally contain useful information or insight into members so prefer to leave them live. We set up our parameters to permit each member one signature per rendered page at the reader end, and readers are offered a number of page rendering options. If there's a hundred post thread and the member has their preferences set to ten posts per page, then any member's signature would be seen once per page for ten pages, presuming the member posted at least once on each page. Also, signature images are limited in size, and fairly small, like on the order of low three digit pixels. Here on CG I often read a one line post and the rest is all signature, often many lines of text, links, images, whatever. Sometimes it's difficult to discern thread content from signature content the way it all runs together.

Anybody know how to search a user full post history?

There seems to be an maximum of 2500 in the normal search, e.g. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/search.php?do=finduser&u=94894.

You do a search for posts by that member dating back from a set time.

I forgot which buttons to push. Let me try a bit.

Edit:
Go to "search" then "advanced search".

Select the username and dates.

Better not be checking up on me.

Thanks Garv. I tried it but it doesn't seem to work.

The earliest "2500" I can pull is:

Find Posts from: *A Year Ago *And Older

Which in my case, still isn't old enough/long enough.

Actually, I was really just wanting to look at my first few posts. We could do a thread too, "Copy Your First Calguns Post"

Sometimes it's fun to look back.

Default custom google search improvment?:

Hi Calguns.net,

I have found this site useful for many many years, mostly, for making sure i am pointed in the right directions to remain legal and compliant.

Our family, after many years away from the golden state, is now moving back because the only good hi-tech jobs that further our careers and allow us to support our children that way, are in the big'ole silicon gully.

Since all the new Orwellian regulations are going into place (circa 2017), I have been again, tapping this resource in my attempt to be pointed in compliant and legal directions.

One recommendation that I have for the "custom google search", that is part of this site, is that it ---include a time-span filter---.

(if there is one, but i simply did not see it, please forgive me, i have used the time span filter on the larger google search engine, but that also requires a much more complex set of search criteria to make it specific to my queries)

Laws are changing quickly in CA for the worst, and there is little public outreach targeted towards those citizens who wish to follow the law.. even in its race to the bottom.

Having a time filter on the Calguns custom google search would allow someone like me to avoid wading through years of now irrelevant advice.

thanks for your attention.

Manually search google with something suchas, "site:calguns.net foo bar"
When the page loads you will see a "Tools" button beneath the search bar. When you select it you will get two new tools, one for, "Any Time". Click the Any Time dropdown and set the date range you desire.

I would like to suggest two features that would really improve the forum.

First of all, which i think would be huge. Is a 'LIKE' button for posts. Ive seen this on many other forums, and i found it to be great for acknowledging informative, funny, or just great posts. It should be easily applicable as a vbulletin mod.

Second would be a Calguns Express thread. Im sure i could create this on my own, but since it involved third party transports, I imagine it would be best to get some staff blessing of the rules. Basically, have someone in Norcal selling something you want, but youre in Socal, or vice versa? Use the Calguns Express thread, make a request, see if anyone is driving in that direction and can safely transport your non-FFL gun parts back and forth for a small fee.

What do ya think?

Welcome and congratulations. I'm a new member ( a few months). I use the Marketplace a lot and I seem to spend a lot of time reading entries only to find out location is too far or, in the case of long guns, reading about shotguns when I want a tactical rifle.

Perhaps some work on the marketplace making it more user friendly would be useful.

Perhaps some work on the marketplace making it more user friendly would be useful.

I agree marketplace by region would be a big plus so I don't have to waste time looking at items too far.....kind of like the calguns community chapter just use that as a marketplace template that would be a nice addition.

Default Agree with Marketplace

Hey - I'm new here as well and agree with the sentiments about using the marketplace and there the suggestions for improvement are dead on.
