Muzzle Brake : Less barrel climb. People my disagree, but the "fast follow up shot" for me is not as noticeable. Flash Hider : Reduced muzzle flash. Does not in my opinion reduce noise at all. Purpose is for shooting at night to not blow-out your vision.

For a 5.56?
Flash hider. Unless you are putting a suppressor on it.

Get a Flash Hider.
Since you said its for home deference at night the flash from you muscle can temporary blind you leaving your vulnerable, muscle climb and noise really is not your priority here, its being able to see your target and shoot again is the more important thing in Home Defence |

Less muzzle climb lends to faster follow up shots, and a flash hider is probably not as loud as a muzzle brake.

For SHTF scenarios, I'd rather be on target sooner, than worry that the flash would not be noticed over the loud bang

With a muzzle brake I imagine the concussion bouncing off the close corridors and significant muzzle flash to be dangerous to the user. In that close of an environment, those faster follow up shots can still be done without needing a brake. Just my .2

I think if you research the types of powder and ammunition available you will find you can reduce the flash a lot more with ammunition choice than you can with a flash hider. So my choice is muzzle brake.
Long gun is not my choice for inside the home as a sie note. |

And AR/AKs aren't the only rifles with threaded barrels. For example: Mini 14, Kel-Tec SU16, M1A, etc. |

And how many of those rifles you listed can legally have a flash hider installed in a non-magazine locked configuration (excluding RAW status)?

Thats a good point, but lets assume legal restrictions are irrelevent.

For a dedicated home defense weapon, I'd go with a KX3 comp/flash hider. Ironically, they don't work very well for either flash suppression or compensating, but they do a pretty good job of reducing the concussion when shooting in an enclosed space.

I don't know if it's possible to change barrels though, maybe has to be returned to Kel-Tec. |

I choose muzzle brake.
Reduced muzzle climb and faster follow up shots, as others have also stated. It is louder, but I expect to always be wearing ear protection when I'm shooting. The only scenario I could see a FH having an advantage would be I'm fighting for my life (which I'm fairly certain isn't going to happen) and firing from a concealed position, and the lack of muzzle flash would help conceal my position.. A little. The sound of a .223 round is loud, even with a suppressor since the round is hurtling through the air faster than the speed of sound and hence, breaks the sound barrier (which is loud). No real way around that on a .223/5.56 round. So even if "they" can't see the flash, they'll definitely hear you. I say the advantage of faster follow up shots outweighs the flash suppression/partial decrease in sound. But that's just my opinion. Others will disagree. |

Linear Compensator.

For HD you would be so close a brake would be negligible. IMOP. An AR with .223/5.56 doesn't really move much anyway, for precision shooting, sure.
Killing people in HD/SHTF scenario, kind of like urban combat, what do the troops use.. |

+11111111111 that is all I run on my threaded rifles.
I'd like those who selected "brake" to take one shot in a hallway and see if that does not change your mind. It is the most unpleasant thing ever. Feels like your skull is going to cave it on itself and don't expect to be able to hear anything for days after you do. I'd personally like to keep all my senses working in a SHTF situation. |

For home defense, I'd prefer a flash hider since a brake can make 5.56 as loud as .308, especially if indoors.
If it's for outdoors, then I'd go with a PWS FSC556 or Battlecomp since I wouldn't be as concerned about the noise. As a side note, the PWS FSC556 also does a great job at reducing flash at night.

Flash hider all the way for me. For night the blast would temporary blind you, its sucks. For SHTF flash hider as well, nothing beats giving away your position like a big bright flash.
I like my AAC blackouts
