Very cool, brother. I have a x39 Saiga with elaborate custom wood furniture (which I am not switching out) and I have a plain .223 Saiga with factory original everything.

I would love to try this out on my .223 Saiga, should this ever bear legal fruition.

Keep up the good work!

That is awesome...breathing some life into the platform and for those of us who have to live with the AW ban.

Quick update folks, thanks again to Exile Machine I've got a phone call later this afternoon with ATI to discuss licensing possibilities for low-volume production, I'll be posting updates as soon as they're available.

I'll also still be hosting the STL file on a google drive link or dropbox this evening for anyone wants to take a crack at this themselves, as several individuals have done.

Taulman Alloy 910 Nylon filament would be a great choice for printing this item if anyone wants to try their hand. We used to produce our Headbutt adapter in that material and had much success with it. The strength of the interlayer adhesion with that material is unbelievable. Most home-based 3D printing gear could do it, if the equipment has an all-metal hotend such as an E3D V6.

Tagged for updates, still hoping there is a chance for licensing since I have no idea how 3D printing works.

Okay folks, I've got an update.

I had a fairly productive chat with ATI, and they are willing to grant a license of their patent for a per-part royalty plus attorney fees to draft up an agreement. The royalty itself is reasonable however the attorney fee is up in the air and by initial estimates would require a fair volume of parts to be sold in order to make the effort worthwhile. This in itself would likely require me to secure around 200 preordered units to break the venture even.

In addition, some other added costs came up that would likely be necessary for licensing (aka creating an LLC and procuring insurance of some sort to protect myself from mishap) would likely be best for me to put in place before offering more than just a handful of these for sale.

I still have to mull over the option and do some number crunching, however in the meantime I have released the .STL file for manufacture of the 3D printed version to grabcad, which I've linked to below.

https://grabcad.com/library/saiga-sp...tock-adapter-1

This can be easily modified to be made out of aluminum or another material using a CNC machine or even a manual mill if you're keen.

If you have interest in preordering a cast model, please send me a PM and I'll be more than happy to start generating a list, but it's a little too soon to tell whether or not this will be financially viable. I hope to garner enough interest to allow me to put pricing in the $30-40 range per unit.

Just to clarify Maleficarum, would any modifications need to be made to receiver for a 7.62x39 Saiga?

No, as all research I've done has shown this should bolt right in to a 7.62 receiver just fine. Minor fitment may be neccessary depending on the accuracy of your printer/manufacturing method of choice.

Please keep in mind though that regardless of caliber modification of the top receiver tang is necessary.

Very great effort on a much needed part! Seems aluminum could be cheaper via CNC? F ATI on that patent!!!
Awesome effort and staying tuned!!!

Hey folks - Been in the middle of a move, apologies for the lack of updates.

I'm sad to say that (at least currently) the numbers do not balance out; the cost for licensing from ATI plus the cost of incorporation and insurance would not break even.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking to make money with this adapter, just to fill a niche in the market, but I'm not looking to sustain a couple thousand dollar loss to do so either.

That being said, I have a small handful (two or three) of the poured solid resin prototypes I will be happy to mail out at a steep discount as testers to folks that are still interested in seeing this venture move forward. The part is free to use under creative commons, so I would also highly encourage folks to try printing their own or using the part file from grabcad to make some chips and mill one out on a CNC if they were game (please oh please post your results on this thread, I'd be thrilled to see them).

I have the file, and I have the Taulman Alloy 910 Nylon filament that Exile suggested. I may try and print a couple and see how they work.
Only thing holding me back is cutting the tang down.
Do u have any pics of what you had to do to the tang?

I don't have any pictures available at the moment, (everything's packed up for the move), but I'll try to get one sometime today.

Literally I just had to trim about a half inch, give or take, from the top tang, just enough to allow the stock to mate to the adapter. If you print the file the adapter will still fit in the end of the receiver so you can assess and mark how much you need to trim.

do you think is possible to just cut a notch in the stock for the tang?
I would much rather modify the stock if I could.

Has anyone tried to fit this to a 308 or 12 gauge?

That would be your prerogative. I do believe it's certainly a possible route, however the end result doesn't look quite as clean as it would were you to just neatly clip the tang.

I have not had any measurements from the shotgun receivers, but initial research suggests it should fit the .223, 7.62 x 39, and .308 rifle variants with minor adjustments for fitment.

Unfortunately I've already sent the test runs I had available out, sorry to say.

Under free use license I'm sure someone here with the taulman alloy mentioned earlier would be willing to print a copy for you. I'm up and running at my new shop and can start testing filaments once I get a better idea of my own free time but that may be a little while out still. I also may have access to some limited attempts to injection mold this thing, again, time permitting.

Yeah if anyone has the tooling and time to produce these, let me know a price. I've wished magpul would make a factory fit saiga stock, but this makes it not worth the wait for them, I'll take one.

So which stock is best to use for this conversion, the M500 or 870?

I know I am resurrecting an old thread, but I have made very good progress on this adapter.

First of all a huge thank you to Maleficarum.
So I actually printed Maleficarum‘s design in Taulman 910 like Exile suggested, it worked but I wasn’t happy with it. The Taulman is somewhat of a flexible material by design, and the stock had a little flex to it with that adapter. There are some other reasons that also caused it to not be solid I believe.
So I took Maleficarum‘s design, and added an anti-rotation tab to fill in a space on the bottom of the Magpul 590 SGA. I was going to try the Taulman again, but I printed it with 100% infill out of PLA. The stock is rock solid now!
I believe the 100% infill PLA will work just fine for this. Because it is solid now, I pre-drilled the screw holes and used the original Saiga screws.

Another thing I didn’t want to do, and many others also said it, was cutting the tang. I modified the stock instead, which was actually way easier than I thought it was going to be. This also let me put a small screw in at an angle, so there is a screw in the tang and SGA.
Also you need a longer screw than the one that comes with the SGA, and a nut to put inside the adapter.

I am going to take it back apart to sand the pla for a smoother finish, but it looks pretty good the way it is already.

I am including some pics to show what I did. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
I also have Maleficarum‘s original design that I modified in an stl file if anyone wants it.

Great job. I love how you saved from cutting the tang and the additional stabilizer extension.

Super cool, Vicious! I might have to give one of those a shot myself, though I've already ventured down the cutting my tang avenue, the added tab for indexing looks awesome. If you have the STL I'd love it if you'd slap a grabcad link up on this thread.
