you actually didn't have to have your gun yet, you just needed it by the day you turn in the app so you can list it. I know, cuz I kinda did the same thing. Should have just done it. I bet it takes us 15 months..........

My understanding was that I would need the gun with its info on the application day. I just got a PPT for the handgun I intend to have on my list this week so I wouldn't have been able to make it to the Jan 2 date.

It probably will take 15 months unless the sheriff starts having others approve the applications. I'll apply for some out of state ones in the mean time.

Turned in my app yesterday. Arrived about 30 min early. The clerk had no problem taking me right then, as it was pretty empty there. They were very nice, a pleasure to work with. Was in and out of there in 20 min (fingerprinting took the longest, as the machine is very picky with the quality of the prints). Then at the end, was quoted 10 months until I hear back!! Ugh!

Applied early Feb. Detective said I should hear back in roughly 10 months. My WA state CCW cost me $55 and I had it in my wallet 2 weeks later. I can probably get another 3 or 4 permits until then and still be under what CA is going to cost

Was it just off-roster or was it an SSE gun that had the wrong caliber listed? Many guns were SSE with .25 caliber barrels so the gun is registered a a .25 caliber. I've been told that was a no go but I haven't heard that a gun that simply isn't on the roster is not acceptable.

Default Applying for renewal in Ventura for the first time.

It took about 6 months for the initial CCW, from start to hard card. As soon as the 120 day countdown began I called for an appointment and got in within a week. My experience with the Department and with Sheriff Dean has been nothing but positive. The entire process was my first experience with the department, and I am just an average citizen.
I do have some concern as to what would happen if my current CCW expires before the renewal process is completed. Can anyone give some input on that experience? Hope this adds to the forum as I am fairly new.

Default Off CA list Handguns - Do not put on CCW

I live in Ventura County I Qualified with 4 handguns:

1. S&W Bodyguard .380 - Off list
2. Glock 42 - Off list
3. Springfield XDs 9mm - Off List
4. Sig P239 - On List

My original Background Investigator did not mention to me that I could not use these handguns for a CCW.

I was later called, after turning in my final paperwork, after qualification/training, that my first 3 handguns will not be allowed to be put on my CCW. I am not a LE officer, but I purchased those handguns over the past few years through PPT, and not from any of the same people.

I was told that the Sheriff feels that if they approve "an unsafe handgun", (defined by CA DOJ), one that is on the CA approved list, or one that was on the CA list, they will not allow me to carry it CCW. I am not sure if this is written down anywhere or not, but I can legally own it, shoot it, but just cannot carry it CCW.

There were no instructions on the application to the fact that only handguns they will approve are those on the CA list, or ones previously on the list.

So, If you are trying to get your CCW in Ventura County, please take note... Do not purchase or qualify with any of these types of handguns because you will be denied their use as a CCW handgun.

If I had purchased a gun, that was on the CA approved list, and now has fallen off, it would have been OK. But since my 3 guns had never been on the list, then they could not be used. As someone said before the only way you can have them is if:

1. You are LE
2. You inherited them from someone who was LE

I have some guns to sell now...

I think that the next question is whether the Sheriff allows for officers to carry, either on duty or off, firearms which are not on the certified list. If the answer is yes, then wouldn't it be the same exact issue?

So I received my approval letter 2 days ago, today Peruta was reversed. I wonder if I'll still get the hard card.

Bigger question, Will all the people who acquired hard cards over the last 2 years be told to turn them in?

Seems unlikely.

They could simply let existing licenses expire and not reissue them, if they decide to stop issuing...

Revoking existing licenses in mass would draw too much attention and likely draw a lawsuit or two.

I have first hand knowledge that the Sheriffs Office will NOT change how they have been issuing permits in regards to GC. Remember the GC and GMC requirements are at the discretion of each 58 county Sheriffs.

That's interesting, because I'm aware of at least one person who carries a BG380 daily. It was acquired via PPT and not SSE, which apparently was the determining factor at the time. Going in for renewal in 3 weeks, we'll see what the story is this time around.

I have spoken with Sheriff Dean a couple times and he seems pretty pro gun. I got the feeling that before the Preuta 1 decision, he didn't want to deal with the backlash if he arbitrarily changed the departments standing good cause issue requirements, so he used the Peruta 1 decision as an excuse to go ahead and relax the departments policy. I personally can't see him reversing the current policy in lieu of this new decision. Hopefully....

Security Training Center has classes in Northridge and Burbank for the Ventura CCW they are on the list, Dave and Jim are great. They do appointments weekly, Saturday or Tuesday. Look them up.

I just called and spoke to one of the permit clerks at the Sheriff's office and asked if any kind of policy would be changing with issuing permits because of the new ruling and the answer I got was "nope, business as usual".

This is exactly what I have been thinking. When he first ran for Sheriff he did say he was pro CCW, but then never changed anything until Peruta 1. I like to think that his attitude has been bolstered by any lack of stupidity perpetrated by the roughly 2000 permit holders in Ventura County.

That's good to hear!

BTW, my new working theory is the OCEANCRITTER is either Sheriff Dean himself or one of the Chief Deputies.

FWIW, got my letter in the mail today to confirm my background passed for my initial permit. It was dated June 6. Was a little worried when I called to schedule my interview, half expecting to hear that there was a hiccup or delay.

Made the call, and to my surprise she made my appointment for next week, no issues what so ever.

Applied July 2015, and should have it after just shy of 11 months.

Do we need to call and make an appointment to drop off an Amendment Application or is it just walk in?

Called (finally) for my initial appointment last Friday, because I needed to do *something* to counteract the frustration of Gunpocalypse. Appointment set for November 8... Election Day. I hope that's a sign, lol.

Submitted my CCW application early in December of 2015, received "approval letter" (I hope that's what this is!) just a few days ago, so 7-1/2 months so far.

Default Interview today

I applied in mid- December last year, and had my interview with inspector Jones this morning.

It was a lot more in-depth than I anticipated. I was asked a lot of questions that he already knew the answer to, just to gauge my response. Toward the end of the interview, he asked me to give a quote about my DUI conviction that was six years ago, that the sheriff would read. He said that the sheriff accepts some applications with DUIs, but it definitely decreases my chances. So I explained what happened, how I learned my lesson, etc...

I'm not sure how I feel about it. On one hand I am glad that they are so thorough, but on the other hand... I KNOW I am a good person, and responsible and experienced enough to carry a firearm. If I get denied for driving hungover 6 years ago, I would feel pretty salty about it.

Just thought I would share my experience so far.

Cheers!

Default Latest info

I had my initial appointment 9-24-15 and paid the $125, got fingerprinted.

Got called by investigator June 2016 but was on vacation so wasn't able to meet til several weeks later. The interview was about 30 minutes.

About two weeks later got letter saying my background check was complete. Got training at Valley Guard. Three guns $195.

Went in to pick up my card 8-4-16. About ten months and would have been quicker except for the fact I was on vacation.

Ventura County Sheriff Office was great in all respects and I will certainly vote for and financially support Sheriff Dean in future elections. Don't want someone coming in and changing things around.

Ten months in order to get permission to be able to defend yourself.

The interview aspect is interesting since they are looking for something. Also remember that the police have no duty or obligation to protect you as an individual. Add to that having to get permission from the government to be able to defend yourself is a violation of your right to keep and bear arms.

I have heard that the Sheriff has used the good moral character to deny people.

Overall, it seems like things need to change.

Default Change?

Things in Ventura County are far better than other parts of the state. Considering we live in such a liberal state.
