Getting Better - Sig Sauer Nitron Rail 1911 .45
I recently picked up my Nitron Rail last week.
After a clean and lube, I took her out to the range to see how she shot and actually how I shot. I had not fired a .45 in years and had never owned one let alone a 1911. I've always wanted one since firing my friend's Model 70 just remembering how solid it felt. The very first 10 shots I laid out into two 5-shot groupings @7yds, one to the head, one to the torso. I wasn't overly impressed with my shooting but I wasn't terribly disappointed either. It was more like a first date getting to know each other before we get down and dirty. The second range day, things looked to be tightening up a little but far from punching out one big hole. I had just installed the VZ Grips Operator II Slimlines. Overall I felt like the Sig 1911 was a real shooter and beyond my capabilities. I watched a few videos on proper grip and did some research because the 1911 is a big gun for my relatively small hands even with the VZ Grips. I was also considering ordering a short trigger but decided I would do this as a last resort once I felt like this was the only limitation. Third range day was even better. I intended on applying what I learned in my research on proper grip with my smallish hands. I really started to group things although I always manage to have a flyer. I was feeling confident that I could place shots where I wanted to and that I was controlling my flinching much better. Sometimes you just feel like you're in the zone, subconsciously the gun becomes an extension of you rather than a tool in your hand. I kind of felt that way today and I'm looking forward to practicing more and more such that the feeling is consistent and repeatable. Here is a side by side comparison of my progress. So far I have put 400 rounds through her, not a single FTF or FTE. I love this thing. All shots are from 7 yards using CCI Blazer 230gr FMJ (Blazer Brass the first 300 rds and regular Blazer the last 100 including the last silhouette in the photo).

Shot this @ 25 yards with a 2011. 8 rounds of .40. I'm a lousy shot. Rushed it a little bit here...
I'm a run and gun type of guy. No bullseye shooter.

Wasn't shooting too well this morning, lots of low left. Wrote myself a little encouraging note and shot the last 50 rounds nice and slow.
Top target is buckmark 22 unknown rounds. Bottom target USP45 50rds. |

Went to Bullseye after work today. This is the best I've been able to do with the 624 .44 Special. Still got some work to do but I'm seeing improvement so that's good. It was loaded with Corbon DPX 200 grains and the distance was 7 yards.

My 10 year old's first time shooting
His first shot was about a quarter inch dead south of the bulls-eye, next four went right through it

Take That Paper Target!! (pic thread)
The middle diamond was mouthing off....He wont be bothering anyone anymore.
Show off your handy work at the range. If you don't have a pic handy, looks like you are going to have to make a trip to your local range today and get one so you can play. |

Here is one from a month or so ago. Practicing for Distinguished Revolver match. Normally this target is for rapid fire, but the indoor range maxed out at 25 yards, so this is slowfire but at 25 yards. One handed. S&W Model 66, Magtech 158gn LSWC 38special rounds.

damn, what a waste of ammo. If you can make a group you should be challenging your self more often. Sending that many bullets through an open hole with no feedback seems silly. The revolver guy up top there is a different story and they play a different game which I respect.
Here is my best group. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFFcIqauuyA As you can tell none of the holes are likely touching because its not what matters. Can I make them touch? Sure but that was back when I was learning or when I want to check out a new gun I just bought. |

1. I disagree because it is challenging to consistently hit a small area until you clean it out. Especially once the bulk of it is gone and you are trying to get the edges.
2. Isn't the point of going to the range to get consistent and comfortable with your weapon? Don't you want to be able to load, get on target and fire consistently so that if your life depended on it, it would be second nature? 3. Lastly, if we don't keep the paper targets in line, I swear they will join with the machines when they try to take over the earth. |
