Scopelist.org and recommendations for long range plinking
Hi everyone!
I am thinking about getting into LR shooting. Mostly plinking. I’m sure no one here thinks 100 y is long range, but Oaktree is closest to me and will probably go there. Angeles probably less often. I’m thinking of purchasing a high quality scope and was looking at Leupold vs Nightforce, looking to spend hopefully under 1500. I’m thinking realistically I will be shooting 100 y most often, realistically going as far out as Angeles allows but probably most commonly under 500 y. Less important question is ... any recommendations? I was thinking Nightforce 5-20 I think 56 mm objective. I was also thinking Leupold 4-24 52mm VX-6 with Varmint Hunter, VH reticle so I don’t have to think too much. My main question is I found the best prices on Scopelist.org. I read one webpage that said they are legit. Just curious if anyone has any experience with them. Thanks! Keith |

Scopelist is good to go. Decide if you want a first focal plane or second focal plane scope. If you're not certain about those two terms, do a quick search and you'll learn the pros and cons and will be able to make a better informed decision. Also, for scopelist, take advantage of their "make an offer" feature. Most of their items have a link for you to make an offer for their product below the listed MSRP price (within reason). Often times they will comeback with a counteroffer that will be lower than listed price.
In your listed price range, I suggest you take a look at the Nightforce SHV line of scopes. IMO, Nightforce is a better quality scope than anything Leupold offers in the same price range.

Hello again and thanks! Yes as I’ve been searching every forum I can find... It looks like Nightforce>Leupold, but US Optics and Schmidt are even better (but orders of magnitude more expensive). Looks like Scopelist.org is good. By the way for anyone looking optics planet has a 10% off sale.
I think I’d like FFP > SFP in order to grow with the scope and use it for distance as it’s intended. However the step up for FFP is pretty substantial. I was hoping to stay < 2K but it looks like all the FFP are > 2K. What are your thoughts? Keith |

Here are a few FFP scopes that are under $2000 you should consider:
- Burris XTR II (pick your magnification range). - SWFA HD 5-20 - Steiner TXi - Vortex Razor HD Gen I Alex

Hello and thank you! After reading so much amazing stuff about nightforce I'm leaning toward NF. If you were spending around 2k plus or minus would you rather get nightforce SFP or one of the scopes above FFP?

NF is great gear, no doubts, but I think a bit over-kill for what you are doing and frankly you are paying for stuff you dont need.
I would go to Optics Planet, select their Filter feature, dial in the price bucket from $1200 - $1700, then check all the options you want. You dont need a war machine over clear glass, you dont need a BDC over a good turret doping system. I see guys at the range with a $1500 Trijicon ACOG TA31 or TA33 who are just plinking and never do anything else, never plan to do anything else, but they win a penis measuring contest over the guy with the $500 Leupold...but the guy with the Leuy has the better scope for the job. |

Between these I'd go with the Leuy
http://www.opticsplanet.com/leupold-...iflescope.html or http://www.opticsplanet.com/nightfor...iflescope.html but either scope is well beyond what you are doing with it. You would be fine with this scope, http://www.opticsplanet.com/burris-5...iflescope.html Or even this scope if 100 - 800 yards target shooting is your game plan... http://www.opticsplanet.com/vortex-v...iflescope.html |

From messing around with many Leupold and Nightforce scopes, in the same price range Leupold has better glass(to my eyes) but Nightforce is tougher and their turret adjustments are more precise.

Whatever you do decide and buy one quick!
I went into this 2 weeks ago trying to stay around $1k and then ended up spending almost double that on a gen 2 razor yesterday... dvor has XTRs on sale for around $900 right now also. Maybe worth checking into. |
