OTD?, don't forget your DROS fee, lock charge, TAX... a +/- $900 Loaded (my vote) will drain your wallet of approx. $1100.
Springfield Loaded, parkerized, in .45 acp ...and I applaud your good sense for choosing the platform.

Your mind is made up. You're only waiting for one or two "Sig!" replies. Whatever. As mentioned, you have chosen a solid platform from which to hone yer skillz. I only mention the Loaded because it's a gun you won't have to modify. Choose a pair of grip panels, and, in the immortal words of one Dave McCracken, "Buy ammo. Use up. Repeat."

I've got the SA Loaded Target 9mm in stainless and it is a beautiful pistol, no regrets at all. Has adjustable rear sight and has ran flawlessly, what minor issues we had were due to user error and 1911's being a learning curve for us. If i was going parkerized or anything other than SS i would go cheap and buy a rock island, bunch of ammo, and range time or cerakote it and ninjalize it later.

Colt. If that's not available then I would suggest Nighthawk. if that's out of your budget then just go ahead and buy Glock. At least you want something that works.

With the Sig you get front strap checkering, a standard .250" BTGS radius and not as much need for customer service as Springfield seems to have.
Downside: Series 80 parts, which are easy to disable if you are so inclined. And the funky slide, which is, well, funky but so what? If I was doing it over again, I'd buy Sig 1911s whenever possible. The front strap checkering is a big deal for me, and it looks better than a strip of skate tape. |

Outside of your budget but my vote would be for a Dan Wesson, I thought I wanted another 1911, and my research concluded that short of a customer builder like Wilson, Les Baer or Nighthawk, Dan Wesson has the closest thing to full custom with no MIM parts.

Sig and Kimber both use swartz safety systems. If you want to remain more along the lines of a traditional 1911, go with SA. I say this owning a Kimber custom II. Kimbers get a lot of hate, but I just wanted a basic 1911 and the custom II has been awesome so far. Very fun shooter. Picked mine up new for $730 OTD. That would leave you with $$ for ammo.
If I decide on another one, I'll get an SA Loaded. Lots of good ones in the marketplace right now for cheap.

SIG Target stainless. You get great bang for your buck with a SIG 1911. I have both the Target Stainless and the half rail stainless. The trigger is better on the railed. It is sweet.

Get the Springfield Loaded as it is solid all around. If you do not mind used, you might ne able to find a TRP within your budget.
Kimber is always going to get a lot of flack for their past sins. Sig 1911s are going to always be seen as 2nd tier due to their non-American heritage and external extractor. |

You’ll get some good features from a Kimber close to your range. I have a couple, no issues they run great. Springfield SS Loaded Target in 9mm ain’t bad either. Pretty big difference in the weight of some 1911s- so if that’s a that’s a thing for you, hold a few.

I’ve always felt the TLE from Kimber was a great value with night sights and checkering in stainless. After 15k rounds without issues I’ve been very happy with it and still love shooting it.

Go to a big gun store and handle each one of your prospective buys. There will be one or two that will tag on you. We all have our 1911 preference, mine are the Kimbers.

I’ve seen some used Dan Wesson PM7 sell for under $1K and some Les Baers for under $1,500. My suggestion is to keep your eyes on the Marketplace for a good used 1911.
I made the mistake of buying a new Kimber Tactical Custom II because when I got my used Wilson Combat CQB Elite, I no longer wanted to shoot the Kimber. Ended up selling it for a $400 loss. Then I shot my friends Les Baer and realized it’s a more accurate shooter than my Wilson Combat CQB Elite so I sold it for a $200 profit and picked up 2 used Les Baers. These are really that good. Moral of the story is, if you buy new and decide to sell later to upgrade, you will lose money. If you buy it used at a good price, you can almost always sell it for what you paid. |

It is very interesting.
Every time some one posts a question about which 1911 to buy if I had a budget of $1000 or less, half the suggestions are about stuff that costs 2 or 3K. The guy who is asking for an under 1K suggestion, has most likely, already saved up as much as he could and wants to buy now. He is not looking for another couple of years of waiting and saving. How often do you suggest a Bentley or a Benz 550 when asked about a choice between a Toyota Corola and a Honda Accord?? Last edited by heidad01; 12-09-2018 at 1:21 PM.. |
