I took FTA for my initial training.
Pros- No **** tolerating instructors, generally they are all great at what they do. (soft millennials wont like it here) Cons- Opinionated and less than accurate class room instructions. Jason up in HB, I've used him for adding firearms before. Pros- Super nice fella Cons- really expensive ($40-60 to add a gun) |

You do your shooting qualifier at a range with an instructor. They score your targets - about 70 rounds per weapon.
I was like a 90% or something, the leeway/minimum score level is remarkable. It's very easy if you have any shooting experience at all - which you should already have if you are qualifying for CCW.

I'm trying to decide who's class I want to take. It's a toss up between TJ and artemis. I've taken a basic course with TJ before and did the pre ccw with Steve. I like them both a lot. What say you calguns?

As others here have said, he teaches a great class and it's more than just punching holes in paper like some instructors. You'll enjoy it if you use him. He books up fast, so book early. |

TJ and his range staff are great people. They're 100% focused on safety and positive reinforcement. What I found to be a great benefit was the guided-exploration of different techniques in a step-wise progression. The guided-exploration is 1) teaching/having you try different techniques, and 2) discovering which one works best for you, 3) practicing with movement. The step-wise progression helps shooters of any level become comfortable with 1) being safe, 2) becoming proficient, and 3) responding quicker. The progressions are also challenging for an experienced shooter because the element of stress is utilized. Each drill is practical. TJ encourages students to continue training after his ccw class, either with him or with Artemis. I think that says a lot, of Artemis and TJ. Shooting the course of fire with TJ again is available at a discount. Artemis can present different scenarios that would not be possible in a live range. Shooting with TJ again will enable you to continue practice from holster and with movement also not available at a static range. I'll be signing up to shoot with TJ again, as well as trying out Artemis. Like Doheny said, TJ's classes fill up quickly. I had to wait about a month, but I feel it was well worth it. Get a Maglula magazine reloader if you go, it'll save you time and your thumbs. Have fun, be safe! |

ANSON BECK at Falconops.net. hands down one of thee best!
I did my CCW for California, Utah, Arizona and Florida with FTATV at Raahauge's, there OK, but not nearly as good as the Falcon Ops training I got. Anson Beck at Falcon Ops is equal to the top instructors you'd pay 3x more to train with for a fraction of the cost. I've trained with 4 different schools and guys like Frank Proctor, I still believe best bang for the buck is Falcon. They run there classes at Prado in Chino. |

I've taken Greg's class twice now and have been very pleased both times...
Although maybe not mall ninja approved, Greg Block gets my thumbs up...

I have known Steve for over a year (since my CCW class). I go to their monthly live shoot at Prado as well. I'd definitely recommend them.

The best part of blocks class is after you leave you still have all the reading materials needed to stay OUT of jail.
For experienced shooters some classes can be a bit redundant. But for us non lawyers the penal codes and case law are very important.

Completed 16 hour course at Artemis. In a nut shell, course is designed to take one from being a recreational range shooter to a self defense shooter. I learned there's a big difference having been squarely in the former camp before this training.
1st day is 1/2 lecture, 1/2 unloaded firearms manipulation: draw, administrative, tactical and speed reloads and effectively stopping the threat (round placements) 2nd day is 1/2 at Prado practicing everything above on manipulation and shooting at the range. Ratio of students to instructors was 2:1 while on the line. They spent time with those that needed it, were very patient while we practiced new skills and at the same time, stress inducing. They take the live fire drills very seriously and had an EMT and a SWAT guy on hand with full field med kits. Afternoon was lecture on legal aspects and a test. Learned a significant amount at Artemis and highly recommend. Biggest thing I'd say is that for me, the mandated 16 hrs is a woefully inadequate amount of time to become highly skilled at defensive shooting. More training of this type is in order for me.

I completed TJ's class this weekend and it was great. He has some great shooting drills that we did. My favorite was the low/no light shooting using a flashlight. We also did shooting while retreating to cover and that was a lot of fun too. TJ also brought in a lawyer that did a Q&A that is really informative. All in all I would highly recommend his class.

Just completed my class with Ben Smith of Artifixcc.com. I did the 1 day accelerated CCW course designed for those familiar and comfortable with a handgun. Whole day at Prado. Morning through a working lunch was classroom. Law, practical dialog, reviewing videos of real incidents followed by discussion and written test. Then out to the range for the final few hours. Practice drawing, draw and fire, turn draw and fire, behind barricades, around a door and even from sitting at a table. Safety first, very small class of just 6 of us so lots of personal work and any/all questions discussed and answered.
Ben is ex-British Special Forces with lots of real world experience that he brings to the discussion. Personable, fun and very informative. I highly recommend him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Another positive for TJ. He is a class act. Very capable, humble guy.
My opinion of Falcon Ops - I absolutely HATED it!!! The instructors are rude. They insult their students as a form of motivation to "do better". They also teach a ridiculous method of gun handling. TJ - great FTA - great Greg Block -okay Falcon - horrible. |
