Not sure if this is within your budget but this is one of the most underrated 9mm on roster.

Px4 storm

Swap out the safety/docker lever to their low profile and you have a solid pistol.

Those are all currenlty off-Roster.

The Ruger P-89 was discontinued in 2009 and removed from the Roster in 2011.

The Sarsilmaz SAR-9 and Walther PPQ were never on the Roster.

Why not go out and rent them out before making a decision. Buying a pistol based off looks may dissapoint you on how it shoots. I have had experiences where it felt good holding it and then I go to shoot it and it didn’t pan out to my expectations.

I’m not a fan of any gun.. some I dislike.

Not sure why one of the most reliable guns - glock - is off your list

So tell us how the gun will be used?

Target shooting over 40 yards
Target shooting inside 40 yards
Self defense only in the home

Share the criteria you have?
Hand size is a factor too. Moose hands? Tiny hands?

Tell us more?

OP, define " best budget friendly" ?

- Below $200 : Hi-point
- Below $300 : don't know , could be Hi-point
- Below $400 : SA XD9 or S&W SD9VE
- Below $500 : SIG 2022

More than $500 is not budget friendly no more
BTW, the only Ruger semiauto pistol in the Roster is LC380, that shoot .380ACP

Get a used Beretta 92fs or an HK P2000. Both can be had around $550 ($500 if you look hard enough).

If you insist on new , then Sig p2022 but keep in mind you're also paying sales tax so you're looking at about $500 anyway.

I have many Sigs. My Sig pro (similar to the 2022 but in .40 & .357 Sig) is my least favourite Sig. I'd get the Beretta all day long (I have a couple of those as well ).

Many like the shield, although I preferred the Glock.

The SIG is great, but shoot one first.

We don't have a lot to go off of here. You don't like Glocks because of the look and feel. Okay. What about the look and feel? Grip too thick? Or just the angle? How about the trigger? What's the gun going to be used for?

I've been seeing more and more of these questions lately, and when I got into shooting I asked them myself, but I feel like maybe they should be in a separate forum with a template so people have something to go off of.

DA/SA-wise, you have a lot of options. Around or below the price of a Glock you could get a Sig SP2022, Beretta PX4, CZ 75 Compact D PCR (although their prices are inflated by their scarcity) or CZ 75 BD.

Striker-fired-wise, there are some cheap options. S&W SD9 is a Glock clone but I'm sure some people like the feel of it better. XDs are a popular option. There's other Glock ripoffs like the FMK, which some people like the feel of better. And if you're okay with a single stack the CW9 is a good option, as is the S&W M&P Shield.

SAO there's just CZs unless you are okay with shooting .45 in which case the Armscor/RIA 1911s are pretty budget-friendly and pretty well-respected.

Maybe just look to become proficient with the ones you've already bought until you can save up for a better firearm? Spend some $ on training and ammo.

+1 to this one. I rented an XD9, G19, and an M&P9 to compare them. I thought I'd like the XD9 the most because I heard comparisons to 1911s. I thought I'd like the M&P9 because of the how the grips were molded better. I thought I'd be whatever about the G19.

Turns out I didn't like the XD9 much, the M&P9 was comfortable but it just didn't seem to shoot well for me, and though I didn't like any of the ergonomics of the G19, I shot the best with it. My favorite though was a RIA 1911 chambered in 9mm unexpectedly.

Go and try them. Only way to know for sure that you'll like it. Some you unfortunately won't have too many opportunities to try so you might need to just take a chance. I ended up getting a Steyr L9 from someone on CG and I love it but couldn't try it before buying. With on-rosters though, you're probably pretty likely to be able to rent them.

My first was a sig2022. shot like a dream. no failures of any kind caused by the gun, only by my fault did it fail. I blame that on my noobness when starting out.

I spent hours and hours comparing the g17 and XD-9. Rented them both. Eventually decided on XD-9, plus the Springfield usually have promotions where they give you 2-3 extra mags for free. That can add up real quick. You can get out the door for under 500 with an XD-9.

I eventually bought the g17 anyways to have both. I am now selling the g17. I just like the feel and accuracy of the xd-9 more. The best bet is to rent them. You can take your time and wont feel rushed like you might at the gun counter.

I've been wanting to get one since they're cheap and I've heard good things about them, but I can't find any in any of the gun shops in the Bay Area, and if I order online with shipping and receiving fees it'd be as expensive as a CZ. Is it as good or better than a CZ? There's something about the CZ grip I just don't like but I like the slide design.

I never like the Glocks when I first saw them 30 years ago. But Glock Perfection can not be denied especially in their 9mm pistols.

Try it and you will like it and that is coming from a 1911 and 92FS fan.

I'd say the smith if those are the choices. My father in law got one recently and it is a nice little pistol. If you ever move out of CA you could get 16 round mags.
