Walter P22
I was at the gun show at the Cow Palace over the weekend talking to someone from Sportman's Warehouse about the Walter P22 semi-auto. I know this gun is finicky about the kind of ammo you use in it.
He told me that you need to use CCI high velocity for the first 100-200 rounds. After that the gun breaks in and you can use any standard 22lr ammo. Is this really true? I was under the impression this gun was finicky in general about the type of ammo you use in it. Much obliged. |

I do not have P-22 but my friend has one, he & I we shoot weekly at indoor range. His P-22 is a 'lemon' , FTF, FTE.... to all kinds of ammo, he declared that his P-22, which he bought new in CA 5-6 years ago for only more than $200, never can shoot two full mags without hick-up, or it's ok this week but next week it will hick up again on same kind of ammo even he clean his P-22 after each shooting session. We try 2-3 CCI brands, 4-5 Federal brands, 3-4 Aguila brands, 2-3 Winchester brands, 2 Remington brands . The ammo that we have not try yet are Eley, CK, Wolf.
BTW, I had two High Standard Sport King pistols have the same symptom, the suspect is on the magazines ??? , but my HS Sport King is 50 years old, the P-22 is new. BUT, some people on this forum said that their P-22 is OK to all kind of ammo. So I say it a hit & miss. Anyway for the same price why don't you get the GSG 1911-22 for a peace of mind, this gun had proven that can shoot with all kinds of ammo, or if you want an exact same gun then you can get the "CA rip-off" Ruger RS-22. Only put 300-400 rounds or so through mine before I sold it. My main problem with it was the cheap rear sights. Never had many problems with copper nose 22 ammo. Functioned like an average 22 pistol.p

When I first shot it, I experienced a lot of FTF and FTE in the first few mags. Another guy at the range that day also had a new P22 and was having the same issues. After 100 rounds or so, the problems went away and it has been solid ever since. I only feed it CCI. It is one of the couple of guns I can shoot very accurately. .

The good reviews you hear are the ones about the old non CA P22... the P22CA is crap. Even with recomendations from the “P22 bible”, the gun will still have some FtFs and FtEs. If you dont mind 9/10 rounds going off, the sure by all means. But there are alot better options in thr rimfire pistol market.

Went to the show past weekend. There was a great looking 1936 Colt Ace 22lr. Actual Army trainer...some $3600 to own. There was also a Sig 22lr at a good price. There are some nice gems out there. |

Mine has been great since it was brand new. Does fine with any ammo I feed it.

I have a P22 and rarely have any issues with it. That said, My girlfriend bought one right before I met her and we took it to the range for the first time this weekend. Using CCI for the inaugural break in it continually had issues feeding.
What I noticed with mine is it mainly has issues with an aftermarket mag. When I use the Walther mag it came with it rarely has any problems. So much so I added it to my CCW. After owning and using one I would say there are much better guns if you want a plinker. |

I have 2. The last one was bought from Sportman's Warehouse 2 black Fridays ago. I have put many many rounds of many different brands of ammo. I keep waiting for the issues to start. Maybe I got lucky.

Ive had an earlier one (pre p22-CA) for about 5 years and put easily 3k+ through it. It runs well on federal bulk, loves automatch. Remington gunks it up.
Only real issue ive found is the mags start to fatigue where its held by the mag catch. If i dont apply vertical pressure with my pinky to the floorplate, it frequently fails to lock back once empty. Last edited by SunsetIE; 01-15-2019 at 6:22 PM.. |

I have one that is approx 10 years old and one that is about 2 years old. Their primary diet is Federal bulk.
Both are wonderful pistols. I mainly use them for training kids, but they are fun for adults too. I also personally know 3 other Walther P22 owners with no (significant) issues. If I had to find something to complain about, the long slide version's muzzle weight/break/what ever will slide loose after several hundred rounds (400 rounds or so session) which will affect the point of aim since the front sight is on the weight/break/what ever.... |

After returning for warranty work mine now works pretty well with some ammo.
But another issue not addressed here, accuracy. Mine is the lease accurate of the 10+ pistols I own. Aftermarket sights are pretty much no existent. |

I have a CA P-22 and am pleased with it. It does have issues with ammo. I have shot several hundred rounds through it and it still dislikes certain brands.
With that said, I don't get failures with each mag unless it gets really dirty from a lot of use. I mostly use Federal Match and Remington Thunderbolts. Winchesters and CCI at times as well. This pistol was chosen to get my wife into pistol shooting, so ergonomics was a big part of the decision. I wouldn't sell it, but it'll never be a gun I trust my life with. Just a fun and cheap range gun. I think the buckmark is a better quality semi-auto. And revolvers are the way to go imo for rimfire pistols if you're not set on a semi-auto. |

I got a Walther P-22 CA used from another Calgunner. When I bought it it would only work reliably with cheap Thunderbolt bulk ammo. I took 10 minutes researching it online and found a couple things to do (including polishing the feed ramp, etc). It didn't cost me anything, took about 30 minutes to mess with it and since then it runs flawlessly with everything I feed it. I don't even need to clean it between range trips and it works fine (I do clean it, but those times I didn't have time....).
But I love guys who don't take the time to find out what's wrong or put 30 minutes of work into it. That's why I paid only $200 for mine with extra mags.... |

Mine works on high velocity ammo only. Loves Remington golden bullets, chokes on anything federal, and Winchester mostly cycles. Not very accurate, but a fun and cheap training gun.

I had one of these pistols and it ran fine. I would point out it comes with two recoil spring assemblies and specific ammo to run with them. I pretty much followed those ammo recs and the spring and it always ran 100%. Based on web r net recommendations I did shoot a lot of the cheap rem golden bullet in it, and that ran fine too. Maybe I just got lucky. I suspect it comes down to following the ammo specified in the manual.

It's the most comfortable gun for my hand personally. I always love to fondle them in the stores just for the feel. But I've always steered clear because of issues mentioned and price. My cheapo Heritage single actions are just as much fun and I can shoot any ammo I want through them and they're only about $150.

I have had a CA version for 10ish years so far and it has been great. First gun my daughter ever shot. I do run mostly CCI thru it, but I can count the # of malfunctions as very low. Like probably less than 10. In THOUSANDS of rounds of shooting. Maybe I just got a good one.

You probably have your answer, but I will chime in anyway. I had a P22 non-CA and sold it cheap. Most unreliable handgun I ever owned. Did not work with any of a variety of ammo I tried. I now have a Buckmark and its been flawless as long as the rear sight block remains tightened down. Go with a Buckmark.

I also found it be the least accurate pistol I’ve ever owned. Don’t have a beef with Walther, the P22 is just an inaccurate POS. It fit my hand great. Wish it worked.

You might be one of the few to own a properly working p22ca. Good for you, but as far as a majority of people i talk to, The gun is trash. Any gun that has the reputation of needing a “p22 bible” to preform properly says something. On another note it is a good pistol to teach a little one. |

I agree100% It fit my hand perfectly. Controls were in perfect positions and I was able to do mag swaps quicker than any other gun i owned. But i could not group that thing for the life of me! |

My p22 is fine with over 1k rounds through it. Always fed it mini-mags. From what I've found, most people complaining about FTE are limp-wristing it. That's why people have better luck with higher velocity (more power and more blow-back). Don't limp-wrist it and you'll be fine

My wife has one. After breaking it in with 200 rounds of CCI Mini Mags, it works great.
It's favorite ammo is Federal Value Pack HVHP ammo from WalMart. No jams. It even cycles and shoots Aguila SSS 60 grain ammo well, but the bullets tumble at 7 yards.

odd about the accuracy comments, my daughter's p22 is way more accurate than my Buckmark. But her p22 is not very reliable, best is cci mini mags, but even then she rarely gets 2 mags without a fail to feed. She gets an awful lot of fail to extract also, sometimes the fired round just wont come out and needs to be hammered out, I think its a tight chamber and we are going to send it in for a look at Walther since its only 3 months old.
We did put in a new extractor and a captured spring, that helped but not as much as I hoped. |

I have one. It's the only gun I've ever regretted purchasing. I've attempted every fix from "the p22 bible" over the last couple years. It still fte's, ftf's and failure to cycle properly with anything but CCI mini mags. And even with the mini mags I cant get through more than two factory mags before I have an issue of some sort.
Now I have an SR22, M&P22CA, and a Buckmark. They all eat anything I feed them. Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk

I bought a P22 for my daughter for Christmas. cleaned it and threw in a Galloway Precision guide rod (makes disassembly cake).
Her and I have only shot the Rem golden bullets through it and has not had a single FTF/FTE. no problems at all. prior to purchasing this P22, the GBs were only shot through my sons RAR bolt. they dont run through my buckmark very well nor my SW 15-22. nice to find another gun to shoot this round reliably. kids have a great time with this. fits my kids hands very well and just fun to shoot. |
