This seems to get thrown out quite often but nobody ever responds. 14 pages and nothing. What guns did everybody bring for their training? I know they will teach you with what ever you bring....As long as it is larger than a 4 by 6 inch box. How have the smaller guns been performing? (commander and smaller 1911's, compacts, etc.)
I have a Kahr CW9 that I would love train with, I've been carrying it alot lately. Any body use a Kahr in training? How did it perform?

You take whatever you want to train with (as long as its 380 or better i think is the rule), how it performs is to a large degree up to you.(performance is in the eye of the beholder, you can set your own standards and goals, then its up to you to decide if that firearm performed to your standard or expectation). last time I went, it was probably 35% each glock and XD9, then 15% 1911, couple of sigs, and one single revolver. probably 90% of all instructors i seen had 1911's. as to size, i;ve seen a few LEO's training with their backup guns, mostly glock 27's, i dont recall seeing anything smaller than that (size not caliber)

We just got back yesterday from the 2D Skill Builder. My son took his Kimber and I had my BHP. Lots of 1911's and Glocks. 1 DA Beretta. A few XD's I think. I believe I've been the only High Power both times I've been there.

I'd say initially going with a full size pistol would be better just as you develop the skills they are looking for. Once able to get through the class with a full size then it would make sense to work with the harder to run smaller pistols.

However if the CW9 is what you shoot all the time then you'd have to make that call. I'd suggest if you do plan to run the smaller gun take an backup weapon with you just in case.

I was planning on bringing a S&W Sigma as a secondary in case something broke. I Know its a Glock copy, but it has better ergonomics, Ive put thousands of rounds through it, and I'm used to the heavy trigger pull. The Kahr was definately a welcome change. The trigger pull and size for IWB were big selling points for me. Training with a fullsize will definately help me with my duty carry(Beretta 92 DAO). I just thought it would be nice to train with my CCW.

I was planning on buying another gun this year. A Rifle not a Handgun.
A new weapon for frontsight would be a great excuse to buy two.

Before you say dont buy another gun, buy more training. training is another part of the budget.

Default Handgun for Front Sight

Assuming it fits your hand, there is no doubt in my mind that you'll do better at FS with a full -sized pistol ; both the recoil management and weapon manipulation are just easier with a larger gun. That said, I used an S&W MP9c and didn't feel I was significantly disadvantaged. Most of the guns in my class were Glocks, XDs and 1911s, in that order, but the only DG we had was shooting a SIG. Any 1st-tier handgun should do OK. If you are using 10-round or less magazines I'd strongly suggest bringing 4 or 5 rather than the minimum 3. Also, I'd never go to FS without a backup gun.

I have a Kahr PM9, it's great to carry. But, I find it more difficult to shoot then larger guns. Because I wanted to focus on and learn the techniques as well as I could, I decided to use a full size gun to start off with. I used my full size Glock 45 a G21SF. Once I get better, I may start working with smaller guns.

PM me to discuss Diamonds for lower grade members of FS.
Normal Diamonds are for non- life members as many here know.
I want to jump to Ambassador but want to jump from a higher spot!
Thanks

My wife and I carry pm40's, so we trained with them, to include at FS numerous times until we got good with them. To include FS HG Advance Tactics courses.

Nice. I was driving back yesterday from Vegas for some R&R after spending 5 days at Front Sight (4 day def. handgun + 30 state CCW), and didn't notice the email regarding the $500.

......actually, I noticed this text:

"These Credits can be used for anything at the Front Sight Pro Shop in Pahrump, or here on MyFrontSight.com. Also displayed (in the "Used" column) is the amount you've used so far."

That's pretty sweet, especially if the 40% discount in the Pro Shop still applies (fingers crossed...but not hopeful).

Just finished the two day handgun course shooting with my baby glock 27. I don't think I could DG with it yet but could probably shoot graduate level.

Also spent $200 of my $500 at the pro shop on some nice 511 fleece jacket and tactical pants. No discount applies though.

Too bad about the discount!! Shooting a small framed pistol is hard. It took me FOREVER to DG with my Kahr PM40!! Lots of cuts and pressure sores, BUT it can be done!!

I got Graduate certification with my Glock 26. I think I was the only one of the about 6 people in my class to get Graduate who was using a gun as small as the G26. The 2 people who got Distinguished Graduate were shooting full size handguns (a Glock 17 and a USP40 with LEM). The next time I go back, I'm bringing something bigger. Manipulating my G26 tore up my hands and got pretty tiring after 4 days.

Same boat as you. If I used a Glock 35 I would have DG the class. I was using a Glock 23 with a crossbreed supertuck and got a graduate certificate.

The problem I have is people are forced to bring a weapon that gets them a DG, BUT their carry weapon is the smaller weapon. So, you need to be good with your carry weapon, but DG is more important to the student either because they want to prove they can DG OR want to be able to take advanced courses.

It took me over a year to DG with my PM40, but I became super confident with my abilities with it. The last thing you want is to be in a critical situation with your small weapon, need to rely on it, and then be thinking/distracted metally, about how you wished you had your full size pistol.

Two comments. First it is about skill building not certificates. Don't lose track that it is about building you skills. That said, I understand you need the DG to take advanced classes.

I took one class with a gentleman that was shooting a snub nosed .38 revolver. He shot the skills test clean. . . . any gun will do . . .

Just got another email for forthcoming gifts tomorrow:

"At 9:00am PST on Wednesday, November 27, 2012 I will deposit a 5, TBD Legacy Lifetime Memberships into your newly formed Ambassador account that you can sell or transfer to anyone you wish who is not yet a Front Sight member."

They goofed on the dates...but, a nice gift indeed.

True, but, I have been going to FS for many years, met a lot of nice people there who shoot well, competant, safe, but can't shoot with them in advanced courses as they will never DG for whatever reason. I think that the advanced courses would benefit them, and they would do well in the classes and learn a lot. On the flip side, shot with people in the advanced courses and wondered how they ever REALLY DG'ed? I think graduate level should be enough to advance.

On the other hand thanks for the 5 (10 for my family) Legacy's!!

I'd like to shoot for FS this Spring, but would like to go with a group. Anyone making plans for Spring, maybe sometime in May?

My idea is to do back to back (handgun & rifle) 4 day courses.

I have. You will make your life much easier if you start practicing doing everything with your support hand. Shooting, malfunctions, etc. Otherwise, everything else is easily learned.

Hey ZMan - you need to do a video segment of your wife's experience at Front Sight. I'm still trying to convince my wife to take a class.

Just to be clear, this class is different from the 2 day Advanced Tactical Handgun course (AKA "Tactics"), where you go through Sul position, support hand shooting, responses to the sides and rear, etc. This is a once-yearly four day handgun course that requires prior completion of Tactics.

Anybody know what goes on? The description sounds pretty varied:

Latest Ambassador gift = 10 Patriot memberships? What comes with Patriot memberships? When I got my Patriot membership, it came with 7 manuals and a 5 day Handgun/CCW certificate.

FS is pretty picky about their PR image, and getting permission to shoot video is a giant hassle. Even so, if your wife would like to talk to another woman, I am sure my main squeeze would entertain the idea.
