I'll be using it with an Elecraft K2 and a Buddistick antenna. I've tried tuning by ear on the with the Buddistick on my KX1, but didn't have great luck. I'm thinking this will make my life a little easier until I decide to fork over $179 for K2's automatic antenna tuner.

Everyone likes it. I get a lot of questions and Dan & Tom ofg Outdoor USA net love it too. But what's funny is that some that like it don't get it.

Finally got a callsign: KK6JGM
I'll probably be hopping around the local 2m/1.25m/70cm repeaters. Until I manage to get my 40m and 80m QRP rigs working...

Welcome! Tomorrow night, you can check in to the MDARC net on W6CX at 7:30 PM. They take guest check-ins at the end of the member roll call.

I'm kinda wondering if we should coordinate some sort of "calguns simplex test" or even our own field day. It would be interesting to see who all could talk to who all, whether for shtf or simply giggles...

That would be interesting. I imagine there are several of us within simplex range.

With the larger memory capacities in most modern radios, I always suggest that people program in a least one linked repeater network for their (operational) area. In the event of trouble or emergency, you stand a better chance at reaching someone, as this example shows.
The WIN System (Western Inter-tie Network) is one of the more established networks using IRLP (Internet Relay Link Project) that allows a broad coverage from San Diego to Alaska (and beyond actually). See: http://www.winsystem.org Central & NorCal users can check out the CARLA System (http://www.carlaradio.net/). Also includes Western Nevada links. The Baldwin Hills Radio Club has their own "West Coast Repeater Network" that covers SoCal, plus some Central CA cities and Sacramento. See http://barc.us/WCRN/ I'm sure there are many more out there. |

Just upgraded to General. Now back to building my Elecraft K2.
Edit: Just finished the K2 after a solid 76.75 hours of soldering and winding. This thing is awesome! Last edited by dgc357; 02-16-2014 at 11:00 AM.. |

Passed my Technician and General FCC ham tests. I whiffed the Extra but didn't really study for it and guessed on at least half of them. They wouldn't tell me direct, of course, but could hear the VEC's whispering I got 33 before I got the thumbs down.
Still waiting on my call sign... Now to pick a decent radio. Would really like an Elecraft KX3 but probably out of the budget unfortunately.

W1JCF, technician, have a little baofeng handheld, but I'm in a terrible location (canyon, hills all around), can hit a few local repeaters but until I pick up and move I won't be doing a whole lot over the air. Got my ham license for long distance motorcycle riding, where its quite handy to have rider to rider communication over a longer distance than bluetooth can provide.

Thanks! Ham community seems great. All I can do is listen in on the Baofeng my wife bought me for now. I was originally all about upgrading to a Yaesu HT and then a larger mobile (probably an 817) and eventually something like an ICOM IC-7000 or 7100 but now the only thing on my mind is the KX3... but that price delta is large especially once moving passed the vicinity of the 817. QRP and NVIS sound right up my alley to see what I can reach from Baldy or Wilson.

For those of you General and Extra license holders working HF looking for DX contacts...
A buddy of mine, and a big 2A proponent, lives in Missouri. You might be able to raise him on 40 or 20 meters by calling KD0YKL in the early evenings here (2 hr time difference). His General license still has a shine on it too so contacts are good. He tells me he wanders around on 40M most nights (there's a quiet spot around 7.240) and sometimes on 20M. Anytime after about 6pm CDT (4pm PDT) you can try to raise him. Last edited by BillCA; 03-20-2014 at 2:57 PM.. |

Got my Technician License 8/1992 in a two day class with my Dad then bought a Kenwood TH-78A radio but never really used it. It pretty much sat in a box after a year of occasionally playing with it.
Pulled the HT out again in 2011 and found it had gone DOA internally. (Leaky capacitor) Got motivated to get into the hobby again and had an excuse to buy some new toys so I upgraded to General 10/2011. Bought a Yaesu FT-60 as a reward. Two months later had the urge to have a rig in my truck and bought a Yaesu FT-7900. Finally decided to get my Extra license and completed that in 3/2013. Bought a barely used Yaesu FT-857D a few months after that. Now I'm working on recruiting some of my friends to take up the hobby. A group of us went shooting out in Apple Valley the other weekend where there was no Cell Phone coverage. Was able to demonstrate the use of the radios through a repeater and simplex. Seemed to peak the interest of a few people who finally got to see a practical use for a license. Last edited by FilmGuy; 09-21-2014 at 2:56 PM.. |

i used my HT's for my dual sport adventures off into the wilderness, comes in great being able to have contact with civilization and have ran into other riders intrested in them as well after seeing and hearing how simple my little baofeng works.
im setting up my imax200 on the icom7200 today and will play on 28.400 later on this evening for anyone who may be on. |

The big obstacle for me, though, is hearing anyone through all the noise I get at my place.
