I like to leave it on "1".

I believe the "1" denotes the 100 meter zero, the "2" denotes the 200 meter zero, and so on. The rear-most sight position is marked "Π" and is the battle zero position. It seems to be the same elevation as the 300 meter zero.

You can adjust the front sight post for windage (buy drifting the cylinder base) as well elevation (by screwing/unscrewing the front sight post).

The elevation adjustment on the front sight is useful for fine-tuning the sights so that the rear sight marks match up to your sight picture, whether you prefer a center hold or 6 o'clock hold.

Also, I believe the sight marks on AK74s are calibrated for the 5.45x39 PSGS 53-grain 7N6 projectile with a muzzle velocity of about 3000 fps from a 16" barrel. Most of the Russian surplus is of this type.

If you shoot Wolf, Tula, or Brown/Silver/Golden/Gilded/Platinum/Bedazzled Bear ammo, most of it is 60-grain projectile with a muzzle velocity of about 2850 fps. At longer ranges you may experience different bullet drop characteristics, causing the rear sight marks to "be off."
