Also she wants to be near water. It doesn't matter if it is fresh or salt water. The only things to hunt now are coyotes, Eurasian collared doves, and jack rabbits.

Might be worth cross posting this in the hunting forum as well.

Camping in the Angeles near water will be like camping near the creek that runs between San Diego and Tijuana. Literally.

There is a state park on the coast in Malibu that many people tent camp in. I forgot the name. Google it. But no hunting allowed.

You'll have to drive more than a couple hours away if you want to camp and hunt in Cali. That's just a fact. Yes it can be done in the Angeles, but you need to do your research for n where to go. I hunt there every year and work in there as well. I would never camp there. Too close to L.A. with too many undesirables lurking around. YMMV.

Sycamore Canyon campground in Malibu (pt mugu SP) is a nice spot, right next to the beach- but no hunting nearby.

Leo Carrillo State Beach also, but gets noisy on weekends.
Check for reservations.

You can "hunt" some fish.

Coastal campgrounds in CA are nearly impossible without reservations unless you go in as a backpacker (then it's first come, first served). If you can get to Catalina, then it'll satisfy everything you're looking for - water, camping, and hunting - without much trouble. You can even rent a kayak, boat in to a secluded cove, and enjoy everything nature has to offer!

In my younger days, I've spent many nights on the cold rocky ground---then switched to my full-size van---do everything during the day---sleep in the van with comfy mattress after dark---now I'm old, my wife loves to visit the trees and rivers and coastline---we travel way out into the wilderness---find a nice lodge and check-in---works just fine...
