Default So what are the gun shops charging for ammo these days?

Debating if it's worth going to check out any gun shops with social distancing, long lines, and waiting outdoors in the heat. What kind of ammo prices are you all seeing?

9mm is going for $0.60 - 0.80/rd after DROS. Basically about the same as .223 or 556 (Northern California, Bay Area).

7.62 staying steady at $0.30ish for FMJ and $0.40-0.50 for HP though.

I saw cases PMC M855 (500 round) go for $300 in the Marketplace. But I'm sure its gone now. I thought that was a pretty good deal given the current demand.

I don't need any, but I've seen mostly .60 to .80 a round for basic 55 grain stuff too. I think if you hit a Big 5 or other LGS at the right time you could get a better price. Its like a treasure hunt right now.

Most amusing to me, because I don't need any, is the going price of 9mm. Pretty soon people will be selling 9 by the round instead of the box.

I heard that .380 auto is ridiculously priced too.

I feel sorry for new gun owners, but I don't feel sorry for long time gun owners. Long time owners should know better.

My joke was right that the ammo would cost more than high cap mags.

I'm sitting pretty smug and pretty right now but if Biden wins, I don't know I have enough to go a month of him in office + the 7 years 11 months of a heels up Harris administration. I'm still buying components if they aren't too terribly overpriced.

In that case I'm selling it for $0.60 a round

If you've owned a gun for any length of time, you'll know you should always have a couple of thousand rounds on hand.

Wolf 9mm 115gr steel case ammo has been available from time to time for $380 a 1000rd box (aka double the price of a few months ago)

Just wanted to give a shout out to Primary Arms for supporting the community through their pricing . I have not been fast enough to get any, but they sell all their ammo at pre covid prices (aka $9 per 50rd if Blazer 9mm brass case 115gr)

Simple solution:

Don’t buy ammo.

You can find it...you just have to know where to look. I buy .40, 9mm, .223, 5.56, .38 special, etc at various places every couple of days. Pick the same 3-4 shops and frequent them and get to know the staff. If you build rapport quickly, they'll drop hints on when to come in. If you're really lucky, they'll text you when the truck drops pallets before they put it on the floor.

Most places, yes. I have found a store that gets shipments weekly and sells 9mm for .28/rd. No, I'm not sharing where. I found it by doing my leg work. It's out there...

TBH, I really don't pay attention to price. For over a year I have been buying 3 or 4 boxes every time I pick up a new gun (every 30 days) and they just add it to the gun invoice.
I just realized I haven't picked up a gun since July so I haven't bought any ammo since then. I'll swing by Turner's and see what they have. If they have something in my calibers I'll pick it up regardless of the price.

It really is starting to be a matter of availability rather than price for me, too. Still waiting on my FFL03/COE. I will buy some even at higher prices so I can continue to train and improve.

And hopefully take more courses, too.

Yes, the point is that if you can find what you need a few bucks shouldn't matter. Some day, if things get better, you can start comparing prices again.

That's good if it's reasonably full power 10mm.

Honestly, even if it's loaded to .40 specs, that's not terrible in current market.

Not expecting Norma or Underwood specs, but what exactly is it? Brand, load data, link, anything?

If you have studied economics you would know they are not charging enough...how can you tell? It fly's off the shelves at all the prices currently being charged.

In a true free market, price / supply are not at equilibrium until the price is high enough it that until doesn't sell out as soon as it is put out.

Yup Econ 101. Not price gouging. The price is what the market will bear. If the price is too high demand will fall off and hopefully prices will stabilize. I hate hearing butt hurt ammo socialists lol.

Clearly there are a lot of unsophisticated/ignorant minds in this forum who fail to understand the economics of supply and demand. Because they dont understand, they throw out the price gouging/profiteering argument. It simply reflects their own greed (to get something for less than its currently worth at someone else's expense), envy and sense of entitlement.

I have many many thousands of rounds of every caliber I shoot. Many others in this forum do as well. Those who dont have that... ITS THEIR OWN FAULT for not being prepared and failing to ENGAGE in sound planning. These same people are probably criticality short many other things they may need in the future... and they will cry and whine then too...

I wouldn’t call Texans socialists, but Texans made a bunch of price gouging complaints against Cheaper than Dirt.

It isn’t just “whiny California latecomers to gun ownership” that are annoyed by the price increases

Even the online vendor prices are crazy. I've seen 9mm for over $600/1K and .45 for $929/1K on ammoseek.com

I was smart and stacked deep long ago when we in CA could buy online and get 1K 9mm for $169 and 223 for $289. Now I load my own and don't have these problems.

Yeah, not too bad... I think when things were better a few years ago i was buying brass case 10mm (S&B) for $12 or so mail order and then LGS marked up a batch at around $15 so not bad right now. For a while, 45 ACP and 10mm were down to $13-$15 a box. I like to think I have a mountain of .45 but I am afraid to inventory hahah.

even if you stocked up before the shortage & price increase, it wont last long if you still go to the range often, you could use up 50% or more within the next couple of years

I havent been back to the range since last spring, because of the pandemic

no indoor ranges because of Covid-19 and recirculating air inside an enclosed building

no outdoor range because of the recent heat wave and poor air quality from all the fires

plus the cost of ammo, makes me not want to use up my current supplies

I wont pay $30 for a box of 9mm or 45

so no shooting trips for a while

Give the “supply and demand” lectures a rest. That theory needs a free market to be valid. Commiefornia is not a free market. We cannot freely buy and sell.

I have been buying 9mm for .28/round. I haven't seen any 40 cal in months. One local shop wanted $550 for 1000 rounds of 7.62x39.
