10/22 TD W/Hogue OM Stock and GM BBL
A friend of mine recently picked up a 10/22 TD, but wanted a bull barrel for it. After gutting the TD and comparing it to the standard 10/22 setup, it didn't look to be a huge change. He ordered a Green Mountain Stainless .920" barrel and I cut it up.
Still waiting on his Hogue stock that we'll modify, but I wanted to share some before/after photos he took. I'll post more photos once it comes together more. Last edited by couch; 10-23-2012 at 10:31 AM.. |

future possibility if the flutes don't pose an issue (location in relation to the locking block).
otherwise a solid light weight barrel is definitely in store |

Well the stock finally came in and we (Super_Chief and I) finished it up.
I started off by milling off the tang on the front block. This tang is used to push the takedown pin so you don't need to pull it out with your thumb to install it as you do to take it down. I didn't want to cut a large slot in the side of the stock and also didn't want to have to remove the block to install the receiver in the stock so I simply milled it off. This requires pulling the TD pin out to install the front end, same as you need to do when you remove the front pin. Not a huge deal really. Once the Receiver and barrel dropped in part way we could see exactly where I needed to remove material in the stock. Ran a 1/2" endmill along the bottom of the stock on centerline to add clearance for the aluminum block that is threaded onto the barrel then relieved the shoulder where the rear takedown screw is. I then flipped over the stock so the bottom was facing up in the mill. Milled the slot for the takedown pin to slide in then milled the recess for your thumb to reach the pin. After that the front takedown screw hole was drilled and counterbored. Installed the receiver and barrel, checked that everything fit flush, screw holes lined up and the takedown pin slid in its assembly. Once all that was finalized the stock was cut in half with a thin blade to leave as little of a gap as possible. After it was cut in half everything was assembled and test fit. Ran into an issue with the stop on the barrel block hitting the stock so I clearanced the rear half of the stock with the Dremel. Came out clean though and all fit perfect after that! Still need to touch up the rough edge from sawing but other than that I'm really happy with how it came out. |

you know, whether I can actually own one of these totally changes how I would proceed with the only 10/22 I'm allowing myself to have. So far I've been planning a custom build from a 10/22 80%, but if I can have a take down with bull barrel and a stock of my liking, well, that changes everything.

the only thing I would be afraid of is getting all the parts if you were to create the take down receiver from 80%. I was looking at the BOM and it seems the collar on the receiver has a note next to it, "must be factory installed". I hope that doesn't mean you can't even buy it. |

That YouTube video doesn't show much that's relevant to the actual difference in the barrel area. I could be wrong though since I watched it without sound.
I'll take one apart asap. Ordering two TM paperweights and a jig soon as well. |

I happen to got lucky and picked up a one of those Hogue stocks from AAC for cheap. I was wondering. How did you get the nice smooth look on the for-end of the stock for the takedown release lever? The inletting looks so smooth..

Terribly sorry for the massive delay in responding to this thread. I've been swamped at work and haven't been able to really take on any custom work but things are getting caught up so I figure I may as well give some sort of update.
Nothing set in stone yet since each application will be different (barrel and/or stock make/model/material). May need to be a case by case basis. Quote:

Doing just the stock is a fairly quick and easy process. I just need to pick up a TD for myself to hold onto since I don't have an FFL. Need one for reference. Quote:

Looks like I may soon. I don't have a firm price yet though. Really depends on the parts being modified. Last edited by couch; 03-01-2013 at 1:27 PM.. |
