Well, isn't this just a delightful situation that you fine folk have thrown me into? I've always been in love with AKs, but, being a Californian, I have always been too discouraged to try owning one due to the many complications that seem to arise with obtaining one... ( Poor quality of goods on the market, or outright lies, or being told it can't be arranged, gimped products, etc., etc.)

But after lurking around these forums for a few months, looking at all the pretty pictures, I've been swept up in the crazy idea that, not only is it possible to follow in your footsteps and build one of these contraptions, but that I simply need to. Manifest destiny, and whatnot. Compulsion has taken a mile after being offered a momentary inch, so to speak, and now there is no other choice for me to act upon.

I've got what seems to be an entire Summer's worth of reading to do in order to learn as much as seem responsible before I start tackling this task, and shelling out the cash to do so. My bookmark bar is congested with a bunch of new build-centric reminders and to-dos.

To be honest, though... Even though I know what likely is a semester's worth of information more than I did a couple of nights ago, concerning this topic at least, I still feel like this endeavor is extremely overwhelming, tricky, and complicated. So many hurdles to get past before one even needs to attend some build party. Hopefully, this turns out to be good time, ha.

Anyway, I'm going to try my hand at an AMD 65 kit once I've gotten the requisite duckies in a row... Wish me luck. And thank you for posting pictures of all this cool crap, and for all of the dangerous inspiration such has caused.

Draco AK pistol
Hogue FDE AK grip
Midwest Industries FDE handguard
Troy single-point sling on my own, made-up, nylon webbing sling mount
Tapco slotted muzzle brake

Enjoy!

A little late to the "party" but I found your post as I was doing my own research. Thanks to your inspiration I've got mine on its way and I'm all set to get the same setup that you have. Truly a great looking gun and I'm looking forward to it!

Gruber51: Sold that green Cmore red dot but it was pretty good optic, worth owning imo. If it was aluminum version I probably would have kept it.

How do you make a legal AK-pistol? Could you just rip the stock off of a Regular fixed stock AK? Do you register it? Or??

You either need to buy one as a complete AK pistol or build one from scratch as a complete pistol. It can never have had a stock attached to it, otherwise it's an SBR. No you can't just rip the stock off an AK rifle and call it a pistol.

Ok... quick rant! I don't think AK pistols are practical. Yes they're smaller than full size AK's but they can't be nearly as accurate with the short barrel and no stock. Sure they're more concealable than the full size rifle but not nearly as concealable as a standard pistol. Alright you figure they'll be banned eventually, i get that, get em while you can. So really - besides the cool factor, whats the point?

Disclaimer: I must confess - while i don't see any practical purpose of it in pistol form i do still kinda want to build one, although i'm not totally sure why... feel free to let me know why i think they're dumb yet still want to have one of my very own to love and shoot. Just crazy?

The mags from my rifle fit my pistol. The ammo for my rifle fits my pistol. A majority of my spare parts for my rifle fit my pistol. Shooting steel out to 200+ yards with my rifle is fun. Shooting steel out to 200+ with my pistol is funner. The fireball from my pistol is fun regardless of the excess noise. But I'm shooting so who cares about the noise.

It blew up on you? Do you have any after pictures? I'm curious about the mode of failure considering I see one issue that would make firing your pistol unsafe in the configuration shown in your photo.

Did you put the handguards on it yourself?

Do you think 200 + mph sport bikes and cars are practical? I think if everything man has made was all about "practical" then we would have a boring life. You want to build one because you know its cool as hell to look at and shoot. It might not be pin point accurate out to 200 yards, but I'm sure it will still hit a man size target and destroy his innerds, but thats not what guns are made for, haha.

Your opinion only and nonfactual. Rant invalid.

Actually they can be more accurate then full size AK due to shorter barrel. (maybe less barrel flex/whip).

Using sling in opposite tension method it's just as stable as stock. It's all about how or what you know.

Quote:

No standard pistol can give you the firepower of 7.62x39, not even .50AE and no traditional AK can be concealed as good especially inside a vehicle or other cramped spaces. There's a reason for PDW type weapons existence, a role that standard pistols can not fill. AK/AR pistol does that very well.

The point is explained and NO, I don't think they'll be banned eventually and if they do, so will be regular AR's and AK's.
