Default 1917 SMLE No.1 Mk III*, WW1 Survivor!

Just finished a restoration of an all matching SMLE from 1917. I bought it off Gun Broker but the seller neglected to mention the barrel was shot out and had to be replaced so they got a nice negative review in response. Luckily Sarco had some original unissued barrels in stock and I was able to replace it quite easily and get it back into shooting condition.

I was lucky to find a replacement barrel and a good gun smith to do the swap. I cleaned the barrel up of cosmoline and learned how to literally tear down an SMLE to the bare receiver. Good learning experience in the end!

Excellent looking rifle and I hope all your restoration work pays off on the range. About 23 years back, I rescued an SMLE from a tub full of them...all dripping in oil and packed with cosmoline at a local gun store for 60 bucks. I wish now I had bought a dozen of them at that price. Mine cleaned up pretty good, but it is nothing like yours. Cheers and Happy New Year!

Note that with Enfields, a piss poor barrel does not necessarily 100% mean that a rifle doesn't shoot well. I have a 1915 SMLE complete beater I bought for $100 (as the basis for a similar project)with a sewer pipe (also with minimal rifling at the throat) for a barrel and it actually groups the best out of all of my LE's - when I use Milsurp HXP ammo. Really glad I tried it before hacking the barrel off.

I'm in the exact same boat. Though the rifle isn't matching. It was cheap enough to start but the barrel is way worse than suggested. The rest is in really good shape. I haven't tried a bunch of different ammo, but with cheap stuff it keyholes at less than 50 yards. I wanted it for a shooter so I grabbed one of those sarco barrels too. Still need to find a smith to do the swap. Though I tore it down to clean it, that work is above me.

Who did the swapping of the barrel, if you don't mind my asking?

Very nice looking rifle by the way.

Another random question: What size buttstock is that? Do you happen to know?

Brian Worthan at Worthan's Gunworks did the barrel swap for like $150. The Sarco barrels are of British manufacture. No idea what the butt stock size is.

Not sure what happened to OP's picture. So here's mine. This just came back from the smith with the new barrel in. It's a 1910 LSA Co MkIII*. Mismatched, and pretty sure the rear upper handguard is a replacement. There's a fair bit of pitting here and there too. The bolt I think is Israeli, appears to have Hebrew letters stamped on it, for 17 or 14, I'm not sure.

Looks good enough to me. Just curious, did you use one of the Sarco barrels? And would you mind sharing the name of the 'smith who did the work? Assuming they're in San Diego. I would not mind knowing a 'smith around here who works on LEs.
