Default Is there a way to “isolate” an Alexa?

My wife wants to put an extra Alexa in her office, a small law firm.

Is there a way to cut this Alexa off from the others, in terms of both not letting her turn on or off lights (we have no other smart home stuff) and turning off ability to purchase? Its a secure office, but you never know.

Edit

My wifes desk is in a common area of the office, not inside an office. It is mostly a probate firm, almost no visitors of any kind other than clients. No meetings take place in the common area, which is a central pool of secretaries.

Thanks.

You can disable purchasing on the Echo account but not on individual devices. I believe the same is true for smart device controls.

I don't have one and have no desire but maybe something with the "Wake Word". If there's a wake word maybe there's a sleep as well?

You have to speak clearly, and say...
"Alexa... Earmuffs!"
I am sure that will work.

The Echo will be linked to an Amazon account. Just make sure no purchases can be made with it. Anything else like lights would have to be linked to the echo.
If you want only your wife to wake the echo, you can change the name. I had to look them up and most people won't know them either.

Customization options are very limited, but you can change the wake word from “Alexa” to “Echo”, “Amazon”, or “Computer”

Is there a way to “isolate” an Alexa?

I suspect that ANY sort of listening device in a law office is unethical, even if unintended. If I were a client I would insist it be removed. I feel equally about laptops with their listening devices.

My idea of isolating listening devices connected to such "ethical" companies as Google, Apple, Amazon, and Faceplant, involves a stump, an axe and the offending device.

I don't see the point of one of those devices in a Law Office anyway. Too lazy to order paper, pens, and laser printer refills online? Geez.

I am not kidding. How can you be so clueless and still manage to hit the “post” button?
How can you be so deluded as to not believe that confidential discussions happen even in office areas? Or within earshot of one of those devices.

And what's the point of risking it anyway? To save a few seconds of manual work. How lazy is the office?

Why knowingly bring a snooping technology into your home or office? We get enough of that with our cell phones and computers. There's nothing that these things can do that you can't do without.

Manually turn on and off the mute mic button. Or get an echo portable speaker that has a manual activation button. Or a moto z3 play through Amazon that has alexa built in for everywhere use.

Also to the idiots that think an echo is a privacy threat more than a cell phone, I just put a foil hat on alexa so everything's good now.

Nowhere in the OP did you say that it would only be in the public areas, you specifically said "put an extra Alexa in her office,". It's not incorrect for people to assume that she wants it in "her office", which would imply an area that would have privileged communications.

Your response was exceptionally rude.

No, it was NOT “exceptionally rude”, it was a response in kind. I was not rude to someone who misunderstood what i wrote, i responded to a condescending and insulting post. Read it again, please

In any event, op is edited.

Echo/Alexa is tied to an Amazon account, right?
Correct me if I am wrong... but it is probably safe to assume tied in with a real phone number on the Amazon account, real name on the account, real credit card numbers, and a real e-mail address, all tied in.
As a status symbol would also be desired, I assume an iPhone too (same e-mail address-tied)?
I really hope she doens't use Gmail or Yahoo e-mail addys for work-related stuff...

For some people, tablets and cell phones are tied to a Gmail account w/out a real name, and no credit card on file.
SOME people make no purchases using this same e-mail address that is phone-tied, AND a fake name on the phone account, so there IS a difference,
BUT I REALLY doubt this is the case for a busy Lier, I mean Laywer (as even 2+ e-mail accounts are hard for some people).

Shes not a lawyer, sherlock. Other than a hyperbolic post rife with ASSumptions, you clearly have nothing to add to the thread.

Go take chicken little elsewhere.

Many here are in agreement with this being a ludacris idea.

Did she check with the lawyers-actual?
