Default For my fellow LEO's...a hypothetical - 10 Round Mag Limit for LEO's

Just say, hypothetically...our legislature in it's infinite wisdom restricts us on duty to only 10 rounds or less...

If you're able to choose...what weapon system would you go to?

For me, I'd go back to a 1911 system with .45 ACP, or even better, .38 Super.

I’d stick with 9 and just carry more magazines.

I carried a S&W M-39 8+1 capacity for years. I could have carried a S&W M-59 14+1 capacity...

I shot better with the 39....

Not le but Jeepers imagine if that really happened! You'd want something all steel if it got to hand to hand and 45 cal just to make the 10 count.

I’m not Leo but the laws would change faster then making congressmen’s kids attend public schools. I would carry a 50 cal can of whatever I shoot best full of loaded 17 round mags if I had to deal with the scum that walks the streets every day. I applaud and respect anyone willing to do that job.

I went 10-8 with a six shot wheel gun for years. It got me thru two shootings, so it can be done.

As soon as the legislature and governor can guarantee that no one will ever have to deal with the criminal element of society having a larger capacity mag then what is in my gun, I'll get with their program. Oh and they will have to accept personal responsibility for their failure, instead of the political posturing and hand wringing we see now.

Back in the day, I carried a 1911 with seven, 7 round magazines (one in the gun, four in quad pouch in front and two in a double pouch in back. 50 rounds. My sergeant always said I'd go straight to the bottom if I ever fell in a pool. Like Ron-Solo says, it can be done. I didn't feel under-gunned ever.

I've been in the 2A fight since the early 80's. I have long felt that if they had not made LE exempt from much of the gun control legislation it would have not passed. YMMV.

Don't ask me to explain my logic, but here is my answer:

If I opted for a single stack auto or a revolver because that is what I like and shoot best, fine. If I was being ordered to work uniformed LE with a neutered semi auto, well that would be a problem.

I don't like any kind of 2A limitations on any law abiding citizen anywhere. But I also know that the threat level LEO's face by going toward problems others are trying to get away from makes a strong case for adequate firepower. And honestly, any handgun is not really adequate to begin with.

I spent a lot of years with a revolver on my hip. My last 10 years is was a S&W 3913 auto. Most of my career was a less than 10 carry. I don't see an major issue but on patrol the more ammo the better.

I agree with You. In the field , the more ammo the better . I carry G17 + 3 magazines on my belt. Off duty I feel just fine with a single stack . At home my .44 special revolver and 12 gauge pump are just fine.

I would just do what I always did, carry extra ammo and a second gun.

+1! Practice helps too. If someone shoots a 1911 .45 empty , and it did not even buy them time to reload , there are much bigger issues than magazine capacity.

LEO should be restricted to what the general public can legally acquire.

Sig P226 9mm with 61 rounds carried at the moment on duty. Be a bad day if I need even half that.

Have to go 10 rounds and under? Guess I’m going to start carrying my Sig P220 in .45 and a **** ton of mags

I would say that forcing LEO's to carry "California Compliant" handguns would discourage proactive and aggressive policework. But there are already other political winds causing that.

A buddy of mine is a young kid at another agency, he went out and bought a Nighthawk GRP for his duty weapon. I gave him my 10 round WC magazine, since I sold my 1911. I saw him at the jail one day and asked him how the mag worked, he said it’s great but my LT said I couldn’t carry it . Never asked for an explanation, I was just dumbfounded.

Most LEO could still get the job done with 10 round mags.

For clarification he could not use the 10-round magazine or the gun I'm assuming you're talking about the 10-round magazine.

Well that does kind of suck but we can look at it this way lead by example that's the price everybody pays when they make new laws.

Same.

I did 30 years as an LAPD reserve. Carried a wheel gun the entire time and never felt inadequate.

I used to carry a 38 Special revolver with 6 round capacity. I would carry anything that the agency authorize me to carry.
