Default Is thread locker essential for scope mounting?

So, is thread locker vital? Or is it superfluous if your screws are properly torqued?

No. Quality rings and bases as well as properly torqued screws is important

only if you want to hold zero.

if screws held fast without fail on their own, thread locker would not exist.

Very much depends on the quality of the kit, the right torque and in some cases the abuse level that the rings will receive.

Biggest thing is people need to stop using permanent thread locker and then talking me into undoing it.

I usually use blue medium, not red permanant. On the other hand,my dad who is 84 has never used it and he has been through alot of guns, before torque wrenches came out.
Like bear said, forget the red.The recommended way of removing something with it,is heat, like in a torch. The blue is good and comes loose, like it should with just tools.
I know a few people with high end tactical rifles that even bed the mount with epoxy to the action.Yea that mount is never coming loose or off for that matter.
The machining is pretty good on guns and mounts these days,at least for the normal person.
I say err on the side of caution and put a little loctite in after cleaning with alcohol.

I use blue thread locker on the bolt actions rails… but I don’t use it on my rings…

I did buy a torque wrench just for working on scope bases and rings…
