The S&W Sigma or whatever it's called now can be found used for $250ish. They work fine. Also, don't listen to all the haters and gun snobs. Look at Hi Points. They might need 15 minutes worth of tune up but, one they run good, they are reliable and accurate.

If that's your budget, I would search hard for a very used XD, Glock, or even a sd9ve. If you weren't bound to the roster, there are options.

The pt111 is fine, but I don't see you finding one on the classifieds for that much

You can find S&W SD9VE for 250 used sometimes, and new ones go for close to 299 when they go on sale. i Bought mine for 309 new.

$250 is a bit hard... but the S&W Sigma/SD9 and Ruger P89/98 should all be attainable, the HiPoint is also amongst that price point.

Occasionally you'll find a XD, CA S&W Shield, Walther P1/P38 near the $300 price point, but you'll be looking hard now...

If you can only afford to spend $250 on a handgun, then how are you going to pay the $35 PPT DROS fee and will you have any money to buy ammo to shoot and also pay for the range fees? Sorry to hear of your disability. Just things for you to think about.

I donít want to let anyone else in on my secret, but Star Firestars and Ruger P series are great pistols that are priced below $300 on the market. There is a P89 in the classifieds right now.

how do you know he hasn't already factored some of that stuff into his budget once he's secured a firearm?

I would jump on a Ruger P series under $300. You can find Kahr CW9s right around 300 as well.

Hi Points work as much a people talk trash about them but they run.

Hi-point. Accurate, reliable and a lifetime warranty.
I found them to be a little awkward and top heavy but you can't beat them for the price.
Like stated above, ignore the haters.

this is true, they are functional and the OP would have a 9mm firearm that is just as lethal as any other 9mm firearm - i think the bigger question should be, if the OP feels he can afford ONE firearm, tight budget and all, i would still suggest trying to come up with another $100 or so and get a firearm that has a much better track record and reputation - at $350-$375 he could most likely secure a top notch firearm that will last him for years

if i knew my budget would only allow me one firearm you can bet im going to try and spring for a firearm that should outlast me - especially if i know i probably won't be able to afford another one for a period of time

Another vote for the SD9VE. Very few reports misfires in many reviews I've read and I've read and watched a bunch because this is a gun I am considering. Heavy trigger with a long pull, but not as bad as some people say.

Another option would be to look at C&R handguns. You can find a decent variety of 9mm C&R handguns for $250 or less and, they are exempt from the roster.

My home defense pistol is a SD9VE. Bought it, ran a rod down the barrel, went to the range, put 200 rds. down the pipe. No problems. Cleaned and loaded it. 8 lb. trigger pull. I'm a revolver guy so it doesn't bother me.

Your best bet may be to stake out a gun buy-back. When someone wants to turn in a Glock/HK/S&W/whatever, you will have a nicer pistol for a cheaper price..

As others mentioned, don't forget to try and save some $$ for ammo to practice with. If you are the SF Bay Area, I might be able to lose 2 boxes of ammo near you..

The Hi Points have a fantastic track record. Looks at every weekend's Chicago shooting stats.

+1
SD9VE, bought new $350, shoot around 3K rds never had problem.
In the long run, the cost of the pistol ($350) is nothing compare to the cost ammo ($700 for 3K ammo) and range fees (~= $350/year).

If you could save up another 100 to 150 more you'd open yourself up to a few more options. There have been a couple Sig sp2022s in the high $300s lately. I've also seen Taurus 92s in the $325 range.

Others have said it already, but a Ruger P series is a solid choice if you can add an extra $50-100 to your budget. They go for ~ $350, $400 max. Don't bother with a P85 unless it's had the recall done on the safety/de-cocker.

I recently shot my P89 side by side with my Sig P226 (with an SRT) and they felt almost identical, except for the heavier P89 trigger obviously. But I like older guns, just my opinion.

Default Bersa 380 Alternative

Not knowing what your disability is you might consider a Bersa Thunder 380 if you feel that could work for you. They are actually a 9mm in a shorter case and can run around $299 new and used for $250 or less. They are a "snappy" pistol but very reliable and well made.

OP,
You will do better if you mention what area you are in. Suggestions of used guns that members have seen in local shops may bring a solution.

That said, your set budget does not help much and basically li.its you to a new HiPoint. Which ain't bad.

The trigger on Ruger P series is atrocious. I wouldn't be surprised if the double action trigger registers 20 pounds.
