When I originally applied in 2016 it took about 9 or 9 and 1/2 months. I just did my renewal. In a couple weeks i had the renewal interview by phone. Got my letter a week later hope that helps.

My interview was with Scott Hardy. He was very nice on the phone. Super cordial.asked a couple questions to clarify a couple things. I had a good experience and i liked him ..

I just sent email as you suggested. I submitted my live scan 7 weeks ago and have not heard anything yet. Thanks for the suggestion.

Edit (8/6):

Just had my interview. Everything went really well. Not many questions were asked. I was in and out in about 30min.

FYI...I just spoke to the CCW unit at VCSD, and was told this is not true. They are currently at a 90 day window. Additionally, if you turn in the renewal before 120 days, it will be rejected.

UPDATE: I GOT THE LETTER!!!
Approved to move forward with the CCW process (I did not do the course before because I did not want to be out several hundred $ if I got rejected)
Timeline:
Application - Early May
Livescan Appt - Mid May
Contacted for interview - Mid July
Interview - End of July but that was on me, investigator had openings sooner but I wasn't available
Letter - Mid August

So roughly 3 months between submitting livescan and clearing background, better than I expected. Just need that course within 90 days.

Picked up my renewal hard card today. Took less than 3 minutes.

Interestingly, we don't get a new "rice paper" anymore. What we get is a larger . . . um . . . copy of it, with an embossed seal in the paper. We sign 3 copies of the same, then give our thumb print. Two of those copies remain with the VCSD, one of them we take home in lieu of the rice paper.

No new photo either.

Just wanted to share this with you.

I turned in my renewal application on a Friday, exactly 93 days before my license would have expired. Day 91 would have been a Monday, but since it was a legal holiday, and day 90, a Tuesday, was not an option to turn it in, I "almost" missed the boat.

Got my phone interview about 2 weeks later (while driving). Took about 5 minutes. Did renewal class and qualification a couple weeks later. THEREAFTER I had to wait a few weeks to pick up my hard card, but I was still within the 90-day window.

My permit expired last Saturday. Received the approval for renewal letter maybe 2 weeks before. Last Friday I completed the class and shoot. Sunday I emailed VCSD inquiring about setting up an appointment to pick up my hard card. Hoping for an email or call to set it up.

Anyone have an idea how long to expect a response and if they'll reach out by emailing back or calling?

VCSO will email you back (usually within 3-4 days) and give you the first available date and time. Expect the first available date and time to be about 2 weeks out at this point in time.

Can someone ask them if and when they're going to switch over to an online application process? Other IAs that have done that don't even require an appointment for renewals -- you do it all online from home!

It saves both the applicant and the IA time, money and effort.

Let’s hope they eventually go online. Would be a lot easier for everyone.

Has anyone asked if/when the Sheriff's Office will switch to online applications/renewals? If so, what did they say?

It's a good way for the sheriff to save time, money and effort/staff time in processing apps. Easier for applicants too, speeding up the process and it's especially helpful for renewals since those can be done entirely online from home.

Just trying to eliminate needless bottlenecks in the process.

Yes he did and it's a valid question in all four Counties.

In fact it's a valid question in ALL counties that do not currently do online apps and renewals.

I asked at my last renewal (16 months ago) and was told they were not planning on moving anything on-line.

That could change once the new Sheriff takes office I suppose.

In case anyone is wondering, about 9 days after emailing the VCSD, they emailed me back with an appt for next week. Tuesday I pick up my hard card. They told I just need to give them a CADL and 5 minutes of my time.

Weird, you should be able to see it. It’s a closed group but not hidden.

It's not bad for a first holster. I also have it for my Glock 26 as well. But just purchased the "Centuar" Light bearing IWB Holster/Mag Combo from Alpha-Concealment the other day. I think that will be my new go to holster from now on.

Alien Gear Shape Shift Pros

-easy to wear
-great customer service
-adjustable retention
-quick and easy to switch out to a new layout
-good first holster

Alien Gear Shape Shift Cons

-no adjustable cant angle(to my liking)
-its bulky
-expensive
-NO SHAPESHIFT FOR SIG P229
-no extra mag

Moving to Ventura County in couple of weeks.
How long does one have to be a resident in order to apply?
What proof of residence is required?

If the property you are living at isn’t in your name they will ask for a signed lease or utility bills with your name and address. They may ask for 3 months worth or bills which may indicate a 90 day residency time span.

A simple email to them will yield the answer. Their CCW email can be found on their page under the CCW section.

It's a private group so not everyone can see who's in it (as evidenced by posters below your posy who couldn't even find it). That aside though, I don't really care who knows I have a CCW, Technically its info available to the pubic if anyone really wants to find out.

I've never understood the whole keeping the license a secret thing. I don't advertise it to random strangers but nearly everyone that I know (in real life and some on-line, like that fb group) knows I have a CCW and that I carry. I certainly don't advertise that I am carrying when I am, but keeping the license itself as some sort of secret seems a bit silly to me. I'm not the kind of person who whips my license out randomly or anything either, in fact its never left my wallett except when changing walletts.

I just don't see it as a huge deal, but thats me.

Yea but again...it’s Facebook, nothing is every really private. The only ones who know I carry are my family members and a few select friends.

The way I see it is, if someone knows that you carry....you will be the first target since you may be the biggest threat.

Anyone wanna post up some photos of their edc? I will be posting up a version 2.0 real soon. Ditched my alien gear for something way better.

Ventura accepts "Self Defense" as good cause. If you can pass a background check and the good morals clause, you'll get a CCW.

Yes, because the perp holding up the convenience store or Target or wherever is going to have gone through that closed group, found and memorized my face and KNOW that I am carrying.....

I felt that secretive maybe the first year or two, I think it is newbie jitters. Reminds me of a funny story when I was working in a gun store. Young guy came in (mid 20's) with his GF and wanted to buy a new handgun. I said cool and asked for his DL, FSC, and Proof of Residency. I can't remember exactly what he did, IIRC he whispered that he just got a CCW. I responded in my normal voice, louder than he liked, "Ya if you have a CCW you are exempt from the FSC and it is your Proof". He threw me an angry look and asked that I not announce to the entire (gun) store that he had a CCW. I said something like, uhhh ok fine, but we are in a gun store so everyone hear probably owns and some are probably carrying and I really think no one cares. He wasn't happy with me.
