Is it still too early to say that Sheriff Warnke has held his word on self defense as a GCS?

I would say that he has, simple self defense GC statement and a clean background appears to be good to go. I don't know where the line is on "clutter" on your background check, but personal experience and from people I talked to at the class, I'd say he has kept hi word.

Can somebody tell me what to expect during the final process of picking up my permit? Like the procedure and what not? Josette contacted me this morning and I believe she told me what to expect, but I was about half asleep. All I remember is my appointment date and time /:

She does like to call early, doesn't she? My understanding is: turn in your qualification paperwork and pay the remaining fees to the S.O. and leave with your permit in hand….

Be sure to encourage everyone you know (family, friends, shooting buddies, etc), in Merced Co who may be interested to apply.

Thanks a bunch! I'd say it's safe to make Merced County dark green on the map. Picked up my permit today and Josette said there have only been 15 denials since Sherrif Vern took office.

Isn't the green on the map earned over time and have to do with percentage of populace rather than subjective ease of use? That is to earn a good ranking an SO needs to actually issue bunches of them.... somone please disabuse me of thisnotion if I am wrong.

It's possible, I'm not sure how it's actually rated either. I was assuming it was based on difficulty.

Not sure which map you guys are talking about.

If it is the CGF map, that is based, IIRC, on the # CCWs in a county per 1,000 residents of that county. It's strength is it is objective and accurate. It's weakness is that many rural counties have low issuance rates because people feel so safe there they have no reason to spend the time, money and effort to get a 2-year CCW despite the sheriff accepting mere "self-defense" as an sufficient GC statement. IOW, it can make good counties seem bad.

If you are talking about the CalCCW map (below), the colors reflect the difficulty of meeting the county sheriff's GC requirement based upon info on that sheriff's website and the posts of members of CalCCW and CGN about their application experience and results. The weaknesses here are obvious: anyone can join either of those forums and post lies. Plus, as you can see in this CCW Info forum, in some counties very few people have posted any information at all. So, it is subjective and may be inaccurate.

Also, the below map does NOT compare the sheriffs' GMC standards (since, for most of us, the main barrier is GC). Some sheriffs require psych tests & evaluations, letters of approval from your employer and 3 non-related residents of the county and interview your neighbors for GMC! If we win SD = GC from Peruta or some other case, the CalCCW GC map would, I expect, be retired and a CalCCW GMC map would be created.

As for Merced: if it keeps up issuing like it has and people post such, I'm sure it will be changed to "dark green" on the map around the time of Warnke's anniversary as sheriff.

CalCCW's CA county sheriffs' "Good Cause" map

Called to setup appointment to turn in application at the end of March, put only "Self Defense" in reasoning field. Appointment was set for May 12th. (roughly a month and a half wait for the appointment).

Went in and spoke to Josette, paid fees, fingerprinted and filled out livescan paperwork.

Got approval phone call this morning (Approval from time of fingerprinting took 2 months and 2 days). I have zero criminal activity on my record, no felony, misdemeanor, or even traffic offenses. 26 years old.

So that was my experience with the process. Now I need to setup my training course as the final step. Does anyone who has their permit already have a recommendation for the best course to attend in the area? Im thinking HammerStryke or Stone's Gun Shop, but was hoping for someone who has some experience.

Is that where you went for the class? If so, where did the live fire take place?

I always thought that Stone's gun shop was gone?

The class was in a office space on Olive Ave., qualification is at River Oaks range on Shaffer ave. I believe Stone's shop is next to the Merced NAPA parts store.

I noticed on Merced SD website under faq's the following:

• Is a CCW permit issued in Merced County valid in other states? No

Is this an actual exclusion that voids the validity of California permits usually recognized by other states or is it simply a general cya statement by the SD?

I think it may be CYA related to lack of reciprocity with other states.

Of course, you could always go ahead and get an Arizona non-resident permit once you get your CCW here...it's $64 + $25 fingerprint fee at Guardco

The appointment date is about a month out after you make the initial call.
Hopefully that's enough time for you to arrange the time to appear.

I have had the pleasure of being involved with Sheriff Warnke on numerous occasions. The first was at the Merced County fair here in Los Banos. Our Fast Draw Club was asked by the fair board to set up our portable fast draw range and have the public try shooting. Vern was head of security and lobbied the board to keep us out. When they told him we were coming and that we were going to hold a Fast Draw Competition and there would be 50 to 75 competitors, he said that we had to check in with him at the main office and he would escort all of the competitors to the shooting range and again escort them out.

At the end of the first day, he said that if we operated the way we did, that we didn't need him to escort the shooters in. The next year, he told the board that he would welcome us back. That told me that he was man enough to admit that he may not have been correct with his opinion and that once he was educated on a topic that he was capable to change his mind.

I was recently approved.

From my experience, a basic GCS regarding SD/personal protection & a clean record is GTG.

It took about 2 months from initial appointment to approval.

IMHO - It's well worth taking a day or two off for this. Even you commuters get a state wide license :-) LOL. That means when you get approved you will be able to carry 'over the hill' as well.

This will mean that dark red counties will have a number of legal carriers in their midst from Merced, Stanislaus, San Benito etc. This can generally help the cause because legal CCWers are extremely law abiding and generally safety conscious individuals.

My feeling is that this puts positive pressure on those counties as 'outsiders' can carry but their residents cannot. I would think this would tend to help the arguments for loosening CCW in red counties and give ammo to those fighting for CCW in the Silicon Valley (equal protection etc.).

There are also practical and personal reasons. If you break down on Pacheco Pass or worse if you are forced to go 130 or Panoche you'll find yourself in pretty lonely areas if your vehicle breaks down and there's a lot to be said for being able to assure your own safety when LE is 40 minutes out.
