Default Shooting off Hodge Rd and the 15 freeway

Does any one still shoot out there? BLM and the SB County shooting map says its legal there day or night shooting... If so any good spots?

I've shot out there a handful of times -- it's VERY flat out there so bring your own stuff to shoot and there are some hills by the OHV roads you can use as backstops. The BLM ranger that came by when I was out there last wasn't so fond of the idea of me shooting a 223 but had no problem with pistols or shotguns.

All shooting in unincorporated areas of San Bernardino Co. (state, county, BLM, NF, MNP) is regulated by county ordnance, which can be enforced by Sheriff, CHP, BLM Ranger, DFG Warden, etc. The Hodge Rd area is a legal rifle, pistol, and shotgun target shooting area, day or night.
We have provided all law enforcement agencies in the region with copies of the current shooting map & county shooting ordnance. There are some private land holdings around Hodge Rd, so keep a eye out for fences and "No Trespassing" signs. I suggest going at least a mile or two from the freeway. That will get you away from most people and give you some privacy.
If you do not have a copy of the SBCo shooting map, clink on the link in my signature line, and print out the areas you use. Keep a copy with you when out shooting/hunting.

Was up there a couple weeks ago and code enforcement rolled through and just told us to be careful shooting over backstops because of illegal offload trails. Other than that the encounter was GTG (good to go)!

We were shooting rifles, pistols, and shotguns.

Went there a few months back, camped overnight by myself and shot in the AM before I had to work (had some coworkers meeting out there to film something small for a TV show).

At night there were no shots heard. I did not shoot either, in hindsight I wish I knew I could have. In the morning I heard shots all over, and even ran into some friends. We were shooting rifles/pistols/shotguns - sometimes even at tannerite, with no issues with any LEO.

My only warning is that you really must be careful and aware of what is beyond your backstop. A lot of people visit, and you can't always be certain no one is behind the bill you are shooting at.

Case in point: while we were filming, a cohort needed to use the restroom near a bush off in the distance. I was walking to our cars to grab some water bottles. Ricochets started to sound really loud and close, and I saw my friend scurrying toward me. Then it happened, I heard something smack into the dirt about 15' to my right and saw a puff of dust rise. Needless to say my buddy and I jumped behind the cars and sorted out just what to do. He said that he couldn't finish his business because the same thing happened just nearby to him, so he ran over. I told him to stay put as a few more pieces of lead fell far too close for my liking. With a lull in shots fired, I lowly ran my *** off towards the hill - seasonal asthma be damned and rounded carefully, waving my arms and repeatedly yelling CEASE FIRE! CEASE FIRE! There on the other side of the hill was a lone shooter reloading his Model 94. I approached carefully and asked jauntily if it was a .44, he agreed. I said "Sounded like that, those things are landing all around us." after explaining what we were doing over there, he said he heard no shooting on the other side of the hill, so he figured there was nobody there. He repositioned himself and we all went back to normal.

Moral of the long winded story: know what is beyond your shot.

Official filming for TV show, you need to arrange for a port-a potty for crew on BLM land. Possibly citation could result.

Default How close to Temecula?

How close is this to the Murrieta/Temecula area? I am trying to find an outdoor spot to shoot a little that has to be car accessible. I looked up Bee canyon on google maps but on here they said you should have a truck to get in there.

Any info or directions would be great so I can check that on google maps as well. I have Wednesdays and Thursdays off so I might try to get out there.

Off the 15, a bit south of barstow. Ive been out there many times with my nissan sentra. Just have to drive slow and pick your line good to stay out of any deep ruts.

After finding it on the map, I would say that's like almost 2 hours from me. Could be worth the drive though. Not sure if the wife would like it but I just want to shoot my cheap steel cased ammo that the indoor range wouldn't let me shoot. I think Bee Canyon is closer to my area. I read it was closed for fire risk.

Anyone know if it is open again?

Bee Canyon and all USFS local shooting spots wil be closed until the next set of rains come through to make it safe to shoot again.. The USFS does not allow steel core ammo. There have been fires through the years started by sttel core. Ww are fortunate enough they allow shooting during the safe season. We cannot afford to lose it by a fire caused by steel core ammo. Steel casings are not an issue.

NOOOOOOO!!!! you guys are taking my spot from me, LOL! I live up here and welcome all of you shooters up here as often as possible. But as stated before just be careful and mindful that there is a freeway not far from you. Also please try to pick up everything when you leave and even stuff that is not yours, if we don't clean it up who will? Answer, the local agency will and close down the site. So please clean up everything around you and bring an extra trash bag or two to help keep the area clean, thanks everyone and safe shooting.

I was there last week and it was fun. We picked up our brass/shells, etc, then filled up a large black trash bag full of shotgun shell hulls that littered the area (by others) and took it with us. It didnt even make a dent in the clean up process. Next time I am bringing a couple of trash bags and a rake. It'll help but there is still much out there to be picked up.

U can't miss it. Google map will get you there.
Found this spot by happenstance. Saw bunch of folks about a mile from the fwy exit with awnings up and folding chairs/tables. Got nosy and checked it out, sure enough, X marks the spot. Tons of trash though and occasional ricochets in the distance. Good idea to have a vest on for protection. Bring gloves, a rake, trash bag to clean and then some after use. BLM area is there for us to use NOT abuse.

Lil rocky , but pc of carboard comes in handy . no problem camping there . kids love fire works too . at times it can get windy , so if you have canopy , bring some weights hold em down . there's plenty of woods there if you look around ( hate to say this , but ppl leaving trash does comes in handy if your out of wood )

THANK YOU for watching out for off roaders!

The Hodge Road area is a legal off road riding area.
Many desert races were run through that area for years.

As both a shooter and an off-roader, I know to watch for shooters when riding.
Those riders who don't shoot are not even thinking about the possible dangers of entering someone's down-range area.
Note that bullets cannot be seen in the air, so unless a rider sees someone with a gun, they have no clue that shooting is going on.

Kinda funny store about Hodge Road back in the day...
I was racing an AMA D-37 Enduro out there.
Enduros are not about pure speed, it is a timed event where the course is rough and often slow, up hills and down tight canyons.
This is different than Grand Prix type races where higher speeds in the flatter areas is the norm.
In enduros, groups of 4 riders leave the start line one minute apart.
Overall scoring is done by time.
The four riders will usually stay together as much as possible, "on their minute".
At one race, the course led over near the shooting area.
(This route is pre-approved by BLM, marked with ribbons, etc).
I was on minute 3, so only 8 riders were ahead of us on Minute 1 and 2.
We came up over a razorback ridge and headed down the hill face on the other side.
There were some shooters set up to shoot at the hill face.
They were courteous and cautious, I could see that they made sure that no guns were pointed at us as we popped over the ridge top and rode down the hill.
Once we rode through and passed by them, I looked back to see them get ready to shoot again.
Then 4 more riders on Minute 4 came over the ridge top.
So the shooters had to stop again.
I'm sure the shooters were wondering WTF are four riders in groups doing coming along every minute?
We had over 80 minutes worth of rider groups that day, so the poor shooters had a group of four riders come down the hill every minute for well over an hour.
I'm sure they were wondering WTF are all these guys doing riding down our backstop hill?

Don't forget to take alternative routes and allow an extra 2-3 hours drive time until they get the Blue Cut fire out.

I drove past there on Sunday and there were several shooters already set up at 8am. I saw a couple vehicles parked at the base of the cell tower. Big no-no.

It gets so crazy on the weekends that I don't even stop there anymore.

Default Closed as of October?

Ran into a buddy at Turners. He said that this area is now closed for shooting. Something about it being an official county controlled camp ground or something to that effect? Can someone attest to the validity of this statement? Would be heart broken if it were true. I went last month and had no issues. But with today's political climate and after the blue cut fire, I know things can change quickly. Was hoping to go in November.

I wish I had a dollar every time I have heard " Hodge road is closed". Every other time it has been FUD. Betting it is this time also.
