military discount abuse
So a coworker of mine says she uses her CAC card to get military discounts, she is not military or a dependent and her only affiliation military wise is that she is a NAF cashier. This recently has come to our attention at work and im not sure if she is violating any law or AF/DoD regulation but everyone including myself feel its a scumbag move. Her kid also works in the same organization and i guess hes been using the BX also. Any laws or regs you guys now of? Thoughts? BTW NAF employees can not use the BX or Commissary but can use any services facility e.g. rod n gun, hobby shop etc.

I have many, rock collecting, wine tasting, scale model trains, stuffed animals and sculpting in chocolate.
Military discounts among other things are a form of appreciation for service to our country. I dont like it when people go around with medals/uniforms they didnt earn or cashing in on something meant for troops. She may not be breaknig any rules and maybe nobody but me and five other people care but i still think its wrong. |

If she's got the card, why not use it? I get laid off 6 months every year....should I not be able to get Firefighter discounts unless I'm working? Doesn't matter how small her involvement is, she's involved. Perhaps there are others more deserving, but it's not like she's taking away their ability to get a discount too. There is no victim here, you need to get over it.

From the sounds of your post she is NOT in the military. She is a civilan that works on base as a cashier and has a civilan CAC ID for base access purposes. If she is using it to get discounts at private buisinesses it is wrong but also its the businesses fault for not knowing what the difference is between a military CAC ID and a civilan CAC ID.

discounts are given b/c military are paid crap and are broke.
Next time you call a hotel as for "military rate" and it'll be higher than retail. Then clarify that you are not on orders and this is personal and you want the military "discount". THEN magically it happens to be lower than retail. When I was in VA and would stay off base on weekends I got it a lot. "are you on orders or is this personal?" |

That said, I agree whole heartedly with your opinion. I am retired military and others in this thread who tell you to get a hobby, or get a life, or its ok to work the system have never been in the military or are working the system themselves and contribute to the problems with our country. You can call down to the Pass & ID office to find out if what she is doing is in violation of protocol. If so, report her to the DOD ethics hotline. Civilians abusing their CAC need to go. If they're willing to compromise their ethics on something this little, what else might they compromise on, say for a hefty bribe?
If it turns out that what she is doing is perfectly fine, then you've done your due diligence and your conscience is clear.

my girlfriend has a civilian CAC card and i tell her to use it whenever she can. she works for the government (she gets us drunk),and deserves the discount as much as i do. big business and government skrew all of as often as they can, so i see no problem with working the system....
EDIT: military discounts are often just the simple name they use for government employee discounts. military is just the majority of people they give the discount to.

no big deal if she works for the any of the armed services as a civilian it's not a big deal. i get 10% at some places that usually knocks out the tax which is cool.

Shot I find very few places that give discounts and I'm in a navy city. Get a list of all the places from her and post'em up. I don't think she should use the card for discounts. Especially since I'm sure she would get a better discount without it. Sprint use to give my wife 20% off of our phone bills because she worked for a school I got 15% as a marine.

Ok, I have to get this off my chest. It's killing me. To the OP, Do you use military discounts. If so, you should report YOURSELF for waist, fraud, abuse, etc. After all, you did claim the Chair Force... We're talking about the military here!
J/K no hard feelings. Oh yeah, are you a pilot? Again, just kidding... |

Red Lion in SD charged Uncle Sam $127 a night for a $68 hotel room last time I stayed there. As for this lady using her CAC card to get discounts, I could care less. It's not like she's faking a war injury. Military members don't make low wages, they are compensated quite well if you ask me. |

If every person that worked on a large installation used there discount they would go away. They are meant for ACTIVE DUTY, not DOD contract or base employees. As for base employeesor DOD workers using facilities on the base it is up to the installation Commander or CO to allow them to use what is available we have that issue here where I am at check your local base SOP's to ensure your correct. the only bad thing is they allwork together just as we do, so they tend to hook each other up. It doesnt bother so much they use it but they feel intitled to it, ITS NOT FOR THEM. if you want to use it go raise your right hand and join a branch of the armed services.

could be the base's fault for letting her use her card to get a discount. if you think about it though she could be buying somewhere else. profits at the exchange generate jobs for retirees and dependents and a lot of it go back to morale, welfare and recreation of active duty members.

I use it not being active duty. And i believe it is against the law for people to use base services when not supposed to. I know I am not allowed to buy stuff for people there unless just a gift.

So by that thought process, TSA deserves a discount?

Havent been on calguns in awhile but i guess it was suggested that she should stop using her CAC ID too get discounts, I dont know if her kid was told to stop using the BX or not. Now as for me i don't use either my CAC or my dependent ID to get discounts, i don't think i shop anywhere that gives them anyways. Now my wife will ask for the military discount if its advertised but i think most military really don't worry about it.

I guess this is the wrong forum to ask for something like your claim. If you guess that there is something fishy about it, then, you should go ask the DoD about the legality of the Civilian CAC ID for purchasing stuff at a discounted price. I think they would have the best answer and at the same time they follow-up and make action on it. IMHO.

Seriously. Sounds like someone didn't go anywhere or do much in his time. Or maybe is ashamed of his time and his fruit salad. But hey it doesn't get me down and I have plenty of proof to back up my stack.
