Default Best CA legal ak47?

What's thought on the best California legal ak47? Chambered 7.62 x 39.

Thanks for the advice!

Probably one you build yourself from a nice matching parts kit.

Arsenal SLRs and SLGs are banned by name in CA--however, the SGL is legal.

and to be technically correct, the last AK-47 was produced in the late 1950s--you're talking about an AKM and they are all made in 7.62x39 but there are other calibers available (5.45 and 5.56).

to answer your Q, the best one will be one you can build yourself--search the threads for a build party that's close to you.

an SGL is just a converted Saiga. the best thing about an Arsenal is their finish and telling all your friends that you have an Arsenal. it's like owning an iPhone 4S and not a Samsung Galaxy--they both do essentially the same thing, they just look different.

I don't have the tools needed so if I buy everything it will probably come out as much as just simply buying one. So i'd rather just get the rifle and wait the 10 days and go straight to the range.

+1 for Arsenal. I got my SGL21 and never looked back.

Well... now I'm going to build one... or two... and a pistol... I think I have a problem...

+1 for build your own. Almost all 7.62 x 39 AK-47s and AKMs I've seen at stores are either built from Romanian parts kits or converted Saigas. For $300 you can have an excellent polish kit and a chrome lined US made barrel. Plus if you can get in on a build party you end up with a US made receiver further reducing the 922r parts required and eliminating paperwork. There are many incredible surplus AKs on the market right now and many (if not most) are superior to what's on the shelves in stores.

Arsenal's black BBQ paint finish? I'd rather have a gun that's been parkerized. Then again, anyone who supports Arsenal by buying their products is supporting an anti CA 2A company which has a long history of proactively keeping their products from Californian's even though the products in question were legal. In the recent past, they had openly threatened to cut off any supplier caught sending legal Arsenal Products to CA. They have been extremely rude and hostile to anyone from CA (in person, emails or phone calls. The ONLY reason Arsenal finally started selling to CA is that the economy tanked and they finally decided to sell to the largest firearms market in this country. But, no explaination or apologies for their previous actions have been given. Arsenal can take their BBQ painted Saiga conversions and shove them up their gas tubes. There are better Saiga conversions out there and there are better US built AKs out there too.

I happen to like their BBQ paint. Have done a few home builds and BBQ paint to parkerizing is preferred.

The paint will adhere better if it's parkerized and primed first. Arsenal's paint jobs are worse than an Earl Shive's paint job.

I know it is not a true AK style weapon but any thoughts on the SIG 556R? Much more expensive, worth it? I was thinking about converting one to featureless and they do sell a Cali legal model as well.

+1 I built my first AK about a month ago and won't do anything but build one myself in the future. If you would like to buy one made from a good parts kit send me a PM and I'll tell you where to go here in Sacramento

If you buy a Siaga now days its usually more correct than building one yourself unless you can find a kit with the original CL CHF barrel and you fully heat treat the whole reciever.

Arsenal SGL-21 or converting your own Saiga are the two ways I went with. Both good choices IMO depending on if you want to put any work into it yourself to make it your own.

The only bad choice I'm aware of though is the IO from Big 5, so I'm sure there are plenty of other good options.

I have a few AKMs and of the bunch, I'd have to say that the Arsenal SGL 31 is my favorite. spend a few more bucks and get an arsenal, you'll get close to what you paid for it should you ever decide to sell it in the future. besides, you'll have an original Russian AKM. you know, getting an AKM with an original Russian/Soviet receiver was impossible to get a few years ago, right?

Build one personally. If your going to spend the money and don't care to build then is say Arsenal. Once you build one though, you'll build 10 more. I build because its fun, heck I haven't even test fired half of what I've built.

My WASR is great, only bummer is the lack of mag dimples. But runs like a champ, (was) cheap when I bought it, and looked so bad out of the box I gave it a "roughed up" look with no worries and it turned out great.

I guess I'll be the needle in the hay stack here. The Yugoslav PAP is a nice rifle, looks better than most AK's, imo...
