Default How much time does a Red Dot get you?

Looking at the preliminary Glock Challenge results its looking like a Red Dot is getting folks as many as 10-30 seconds.

I originally thought, meh........ I don't need it, I won't stand a chance either way. Now I'm wondering.

Based on some of the performances of shooters (looking at their unlimited performance verses iron sight divisions) it's looking like I could be running in the 50s (all be it with an Unlimited). If I reduced all my penalty shots (non "A" zone) I would pick up 10+ seconds in one stage alone right there.

You can't always beleive what you see there. Many guys use their iron sight guns in Unlimited and if you take a look at the provisional MM Rich Wolfe shot faster with his Sub Compact gun and was nearly 10 seconds faster in Comp. I have no idea what the top 5 shooters are using in Unlimited but they were beat by an iron sight gun. I shoot a G34 with a Carver comp on it and irons in Unlimited and usually post my best scores with it but is is a pretty sweet shooting gun for me. I have a C-More that I will be adding very soon though just cuz I like the look. It makes it at least LOOK like an Unlimited gun! LOL!

If you practice and shoot with a RDS, they are faster.

However, if you're like me and only use your RDS gun for GSSF Unlimited or the occasionally CO match, you'll still be faster with irons.

One of those top shooters I spoke to last year (?) at a GSSF match said something interesting. He told me he has downsized his Glock GSSF guns to I think two guns. He uses a G22 and a Glock 30. Its been his experience to get gooder with those two guns is more beneficial than bouncing from one model to another.

did the same shooters post 10-30 second faster times in the same match than with irons? If it's different guys then I don't think it's just the dot. It's been my observation, little that it is, that guys who make the bump up to the unlimited classes do so because they are better shooters and/or want to dedicate the practice to become so. It's a more competitive division, so those that shoot there are usually better than those of us still down in production type classes.

Robert Vogel did a 2 hour interview online, and one of the topics was red dots.
Summary:
- if you're good it helps
- if you're ok, probably not

Red dot discussion starts at 30:30

I only compete to improve real-world performance, because I CCW, so there is no reason for me to compete with a red dot. My CCW guns certainly won't have any red dots on them (unless or until they get way better and more reliable).

Valid point, but knowing how to shoot red dot effectively is a skill that is generally useful. Similar to knowing how to shoot DA revolvers well, or how to shoot cowboy guns fast.

IMO the best reasons to use a red dot is if your vision is not what it used to be and they are fun.

Yeah, getting used to red dots can "get you killed in the streets" due to training scars.

Just got back from the range.

It was my second trip with the Red Dot. I'm pretty pleased. I can center punch the 10 ring of a bulls eye target at 25 yards, but follow up shots suck with the Glock trigger but it's still in the black, and I sure can see where the misses are going to be since I see the twitch through the dot much easier.

I should however now easily make A/B zone hits out to 25 yards at GSSF matches in the Unlimited Division.
