Default DOJ Put a hold on my purchase?

So I get a call from the FFL / Store I recently bought a 870 Magpul at saying the DOJ put a hold on it. This is 4 days away from pick-up. That's cool, I'll just clear this up, I tell myself. I get a number and call the DOJ regarding this and the busy DOJ lady wouldn't even bother to look at my case or anything. She said the information was confidential or can't be told on why my firearm is held. She then decides to say how it will take some time etc. and tells me to be patient etc. And that the DOJ collects information. And that there was nothing I could do? Just her tone of voice kind of ticked me off.

I've looked around online and most people seem to clear it up etc. I have nothing criminal at all, no misdemeanors or felonies. The only thing I can think of is that I've been detained once and fingerprinted. But is that enough to warrant holding a firearm?

Would like to know if anyone has had any similar experience with this. It's stupid how the DOJ doesn't release a firearm, but doesn't give a single reason as to why it's being held.

EDIT : This is definitely not my first firearms purchase. Have purchased 5 long guns before this.

If you were fingerprinted then you were arrested, not detained. Maybe you can share here or PM me about that incident.

Surely this isn't your first firearm purchase?

There has been a rash of DROS delays for the last couple months.
If you have anything in your past that they do not have it marked down 100% resolved chances are they are going to put a delay on you.
Theres a thread in the 2A section about it.

If you were arrested, they have to verify that no charges were filed or that there is not a disqualifying conviction tied to the arrest.

Is all your vehicle registrations up to date? I was shocked to know they could place a hold on you for that. My ffl buddy told me about that. But maybe something to look in to

Appreciate the thread link.

The officers told me that I wasn't arrested, just detained. Looks like I got screwed cause of my lack of knowledge.

And my vehicle registration is due on the 16th surprisingly. Would they hold it over something like that? I'd imagine if it's not unpaid they wouldn't hold it.

None of that is related. The DOJ got a ton of check request, they suck at their jobs, and as they admitted in the suit against them for delays, the prohibited people are mixed in with non-prohibited. There are a lot of delays on people who are not prohibited and have had no problem.

But the lady at the DOJ was yanking you. The DOJ is supposed to tell you why. They can't tell the dealer or anyone else because that is your private business but they should be able to tell you. We've had people in delay for DMV discrepancy, so the fix it and get their gun.

Why should an issue with the DMV hold up a purchase??

I know they've got you by the b@lls, but they don't have to screw people over.

I suspect its just a logjam of requests.

I had a hold for a cell phone ticket that I didnt pay. Got notified 3 days into it by the FFL, went online and paid, re-applied, and got it 10 days later.

They will do a dmv hold.

Check here to see if you have DMV issues:

Yes those violent criminals who don't pay DMV fees. Glad to know that a inpaid traffic tickets warrant denying a constitutionally protected right.

There's only a few things that DOJ will hold up a purchase and all you guy know what they are. No misdemeanor arrest will hold one up but a felony arrest that will. Conviction or no conviction if it shows up as an arrest they'll put a hold on the purchase.
Its your responsibility to clear it up not DOJ's. Lady there told me about the policy of certain arrests that show up....not convictions. She seemed very polite and business like.

Pay your car registration and hope that was it. I was at turners a few weeks ago and in front of me they called someone with a delay because they had not paid for their car registration fees. DOJ always stays in contact with the DMV.

Just thinking about this pisses me off. Use my hard-earned money to buy a firearm, but won't even get to use it, let alone see it, for months if it is held for that long.

I'll just pray and hope it's released in like 3 days, like the fortunate people out there.

I don't know what this means or what it entails. I got finger printed and was let go, which is weird. I hope this doesn't show up on employment checks.

I've never heard of DOJ putting a hold for DMV registration. What they hold it for late pay or payment due soon.

DMV can hold up your gun purchase and it is fairly common. We see it a lot. Most denials are from DMV or violatiing the 1 handgun per month. People can be held up for not paying their child support. Prohibited person denials happen but not often, they typically come in and simply ask us if they are prohibited or answer honestly on the 4473. We had a guy who got denied and when he called the DOJ they just said "oops, our mistake, you are not prohibited". On the opposite end I took a call today asking if he is disqualified for a misdeamenor, I explained to him how it depends for what exactly and to download the Firearms Eligibility Check form. I had another guy call me who had a felony for growing pot when he was a kid, wanted to see if he was eligible. Felons and violent unbalanced people are not flooding the NICS checks. These instant checks for many people are neither foolproof nor instant, the libs are lying to you.

I'm surprised the DOJ would even talk to your over the phone. How would they know if it's even you? I would have thought it was all done by mail, so there is a paper trail.

This. There are plenty of other threads about this, and even a CGF lawsuit.

Me too, all I ever got from them over the phone was an attitude problem.

The bank and me have set up passwords, user id, their 800# phone system displays the phone number I'm calling from. So they know it's me with a pretty high probability. DOJ probably has that with FFL's, but not us common folks.

I recently purchased 2 long guns on the same DROS and had one of my vehicle's registration unpaid. I completely forgot about it and it was due at the end of March I think. I was pissed at myself when I got the letter this week from the DMV with the late fees added in. I didn't experience any delays with the purchase aside from waiting for one of the guns to come in stock before I could dros it.

Ummm, they don't tell the FFL why there is a delay so how would they know it was for a late car registration?

Now that sounds believable. That D/L# has a long story to tell not to mention SSN#

I'd still like to hear why they fingerprinted you errr detained you.....whatever.

That's a good point, no responsible bank should talk to you about your accounts until that have verified your identity. Likewise the DOJ should not be giving out any info about you if they don't have some way of confirming who you are. I am not sure how DOJ would establish your identity on the phone, since you have not set up any passwords or identifying questions and answers.

My DROS got "Delayed" so I sent DOJ a message from their web site back in early March. Have since gotten the OK, purchased 2 guns (1 hand, 1 long) and yesterday I got a call from DOJ regarding my message. Only 6 weeks too late so I'd say they are quite behind processing anything!

It is possible the copy of the reg. they took was expired and didn't notice and when the FFL got the delay letter it does say DMV Delay iirc.

My shotgun was originally going to be off the 10 day wait, the 18th. I'm just hoping the hold goes away a day or two after. Do you think the FFL would charge a 15% restocking fee if I decided to cancel because of the hold?

Yes they will. It's not their fault you are going through this issue.....Why should the FFL not charge you?

Go here and follow the instructions regarding your delay.
