Best wax for your wood?

For example: a clean Ruger 10/22 with wooden stock. What is the best wax to use to get that "real shiny" effect? Is that wax, or a coating of shiny varathane (varithane) or other coating?

One friend says: you can use anything, even car wax. True?

Renaissance works very well and it's what I use.

Car wax works great on a painted or urethane cleared finishes. I have both my refinished M44 and my Timbersmith set for my AK in polyurethane and a coat of wax makes them shine like crazy. - I wouldn't try to use it on bare wood though, since it cannot be completely buffed back out of the grain. You'll end up with a stained white grain, pasty mess.

Howards f&w or Johnson's paste wax. Tung oil finish (not 100% tung oil) gives a hard glossy finish.

I love Tung oil. That's what all the natural finished guitar necks use.

I don't usually wax my wood! but Howards feed & wax works good. If you use Tung or Linseed oil you will be adding a new finish rather than just a wax finish which can be removed, but I kinda think you know that already?......have fun waxin your Wicked wood..Pete...

Just 1 coat of Howards. No before pic but it looked like the finish was flat, like in flat black.

Mix up some "Gunny Paste"

1/3 beeswax
1/3 turpentine
1/3 BLO

I substitute pure tung oil (don't use the tung oil with hardener in it, it will cook when you add the heated bee's wax) for the BLO.
